    What is Astrophysics?

    Astrophysics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of the

    universe, including the physical properties (luminosity, density, temperature, and

    chemical composition) of celestial objects such as galaxies, stars, planets,

    exoplanets, and the interstellar medium, as well as their interactions. The study of

    cosmology addresses questions of astrophysics at scales much larger than the size

    of particular gravitationally-bound objects in the universe.

    What they do.

    Conduct research into the phases of physical phenomena, develop theories and

    laws on the basis of observation and experiments, and devise methods to apply

    laws and theories to industry and other fields.

    Physicists and astronomers held about 17,100 jobs in 2008.

    EducationEducation:

    Doctoral degree or a bachelor's degree is the minimum formal education

    required for this occupation. However, it may also require graduate school.

    The major, of course, is in Astrophysics.

    Experience:

    Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for this occupation. May

    require more than five years of experience.

    Training:

    Employees may need some on-the-job training, but this occupation usually

    Tasks/Duties

    Perform complex calculations as part of the analysis and evaluation of data, using computers.

    Describe and express observations and conclusions in mathematical terms.

    Report experimental results by writing papers for scientific journals or by presenting information at

    scientific conferences.
