    PHYSICAL FEATURES:

    The geography of this region includes rugged,

    and plains drained by huge river systems.

    CLIMATE:

    Caribbean South America location near

    the equator means that most of the

    region has warm temperatures.

    WILFDLIFE:

    This region is the home for some remarkable ani-

    mal species like: the snakes, the ocelots, croco-

    diles, piranhas, toucans, jaguars, ocelots and sev-

    eral species of monkeys.

    In this area of South America you can

    see important vegetation like llanos and

    rain forest.

    RESOURCES:

    Good soil and moderate climates help

    make most of Caribbean south America

    major crops, include rice, coffee, ba-nanas, and sugarcane.

    SPANISH CONQUEST

    In about 1500 Spanish explorers

    arrived on the Caribbean coast ofSouth America. By the 1600sSpaniards and their

    descendendants had set up large

    estates in Colombia.

    THE CHIBCHAS

    Have you heard of the legend of

    EL DORADO. That legend about a

    land rich in gold was inpired byChibcahas culture in Colombia.

    The Chibchas covered their new

    new rulers in gold dust.

    INDEPENDENCE:

    In the late 1500 people in

    Central America began

    struggling for independ-

    ence from Spain. In 1830

    the republic dissolved, and

    New Granada, which include

    Colombia and Panama, wascreated

    COLOMBIA TODAY:

    Colombia is Caribbean South Amer-

    icas most populous country. The na-

    tional capital is Bogota, a city

    located high in the eastern

    Andes.

    PEOPLE:

    Most Colombians lives in the fer-

    tile valleys and river basins amongthe mountain ranges, were climate

    is moderate and good for farming.

    CULTURE:

    MUSICAL Traditional African songs and dances on the Caribbean coast and South AmericaIndian music in remote areas of the Andes.

    exported around the world.

    The GuianasThe countries of Guyana, Suri-

    name, and French Guiana are to-gether known as the Guianas.

    Dense tropical rain forests cover

    much of this region, which lies

    east of Venezuela.

    GUAYANAGuyana comes from a South America

    Indian word that means land of wa-

    ters. The capital is Georgetown. All

    of Guyanas agricultural lands are lo-

    cated on the flat fertile plains.

    Guyana's most important agriculturalproducts are rice and sugar. The popu-

    lation descend of African slaves.

    The capital is Paramaribo the re-sources and economy are similar to

    those of Guyana and Suriname.
