Dear Caribou Community,

The leaves are falling from the trees and it’s beginning to look like winter is just around the corner. In fact, it feels like it just might snow any time now. It’s time to dig out those winter boots, gloves, hats, and coats.

Our Attendance Line, 372-3306, option 1, is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Leaving a message there for your sick or absent child will help us cut down on the number of phone calls we make every morning. Leave your name, your child’s name, and teacher’s name along with a short reason for the absence. That’s all there is to it. J

Several questions have come up concerning the drop off and pick up procedures in the loop drive. The loop drive is divided into three lanes. Two for pick up/drop off, and the center lane for moving through. The diagonal lines show that you are getting close to the crosswalk. It is acceptable (and preferred) to drive up to and onto those lines. Students need to exit your car on the non-traffic side only. Any student who is let out on the right (passenger) side of the loop will walk up to the crosswalk and wait for the crossing guard. Please remember to drive slowly and carefully in the loop drive when picking up or dropping off your children. The speed limit is 5 miles per hour. Keeping our students safe is our number one priority.

Guys Read began this past week. This program happens during the 4th grade lunch time. The boys gather in the commons, twice a week for two weeks now and again next semester, and eat lunch while volunteers come in and read to them. Some of the books and stories are pretty funny! Guys Read is sponsored by the Library Association. It’s always a big hit. Gals Read will happen later this semester.

A Big Caribou Thank You to the Boy Scouts who helped us out this year on our Color Run! Their presence and enthusiasm made a very positive impact on our event.

Last spring, Corvias signed up to be Crawford’s Business Partner. We couldn’t be happier to have them on board. Thanks go to them for our Welcome Back Banner that has been displayed out by the gym doors. We are looking forward to a great relationship with them!

News from the Lunch Room

Have you checked out the 2 new Apps that Nutrition Service has to offer?

School Café App sends you emails on low account balance, daily spending and extra purchases on your child’s meal account. You can also make payments to your child’s meal account with your credit card, however, this service does charge you 3% to make a payment with your credit card. The other way to make a payment on your child’s meal account is a check or cash in an envelope with your child’s first and last name on it. If you have more than one child at Crawford, you only have to make out one check. On the front of the envelope, write the children’s names on the front and tell how much money to put into each child’s account.

Nutrislice App has the breakfast and lunch menu. This app views the nutrition, allergen & carb information in each one of our meals. The Apps are both free to download.

The 2015/2016 meal application will expire on September 29th! Be sure to make out a new meal application for the 2016/2017 school year. The easiest and fastest way is to apply online at <www.k12northstar.org>. Look for the meal application tab on the school district’s web page. We also have paper application forms at the front office. Call the office to request that one be sent home with your child.

Please contact my office if you have any questions or concerns at 372-3306 ext. 31039.

Thanks so much!

Dana Martin, Kitchen Manager

Food Drive

&

Milk Money Drive Student Ambassadors are sponsoring a Food Drive and Milk Money collection in October and November to support the Fairbanks Food Bank. From October 10 through November 11, we will be collecting canned and boxed food items in front of the Commons, as well as collecting Milk Money in classrooms.

Did you know that powdered and fresh milk are always a high-need item at the Food Bank? Please bring in any spare change you can share from home to donate to our Milk Money campaign for the Food Bank! There will be milk jugs in each classroom from October 10 to November 11. The class that collects the most milk money will win a milk & cookies break with Mrs. Sperl in November! Crawford is the first school to do a Milk Money drive...help us make it a huge success!

Thanksgiving and the winter holidays are a very busy time of year at the Food Bank. We can brighten the holidays for families in need by bringing in holiday favorites like boxed stuffing and mashed potatoes, canned vegetables and cranberry sauce and gravy. Everyday food items like cereal, granola bars, mac & cheese and peanut butter are also in short supply this time of year. Bring in a few of your favorite things to share with others.

Shopping carts outside the Commons will be labeled for each grade level. The grade level that collects the most food between October 10 and November 11 will win an extra recess, and we'll all be brightening the holidays for other families!

Congratulations to these students, being recognized as Cool Caribou Kids!

Just a reminder:

STUDENT DROP OFF & PICK UP

The loop is divided into three sections. The outer lanes are for dropping off students and the middle lane is for moving traffic. When you enter the loop please drive down the center lane and only pull over to the left or right (depending on which side of the car your child is sitting on) when you are ready to drop off your passenger(s). Once your child has exited the car please carefully merge back into the center lane. You may drop off children either before the crosswalk or after, depending on where there is room, however we request that drivers pull up as far as possible before stopping the car so traffic is not backed up. Cars passing over the crosswalk should only do so while they are in the center lane. The speed limit in the loop is 5 MPH. Children who are dropped off on the grass side (right) should proceed to the crosswalk where a crossing guard will help them safely pass to the sidewalk side.

Lost and Found

Can’t find your favorite sweater? Did you misplace your gloves and have no clue where you left them? Check out the lost and found! There is a collection of jackets, hoodies, sweatshirts, hats, and gloves. Take a look; your missing items might be there. The lost and found items are located by the gym.

Students with regular attendance are more likely to read well by third grade and score higher on tests. They also tend to be more engaged in school and feel better about themselves.

Put your child on the path to success with these attendance strategies.

Make school a priority. Every absence (excused or not), can impact a child’s academic achievement. Talk to your child about how important their education is. Make daily routines for homework and waking up on time for school.

Maintain communication with teachers and keep an eye on your child’s academic progress. If your child seems disconnected from school or is prone to skipping class, try signing him or her up for an after-school activity. A report by the University of Minnesota found that students in an after-school program attended 18 more days of school and missed nine fewer than their peers.

Make a plan. If your schedule or transportation situation makes getting your child to school a challenge, ask for assistance. Make a carpool or transportation plan with other parents or family members, or ask your school principal for community programs or school initiatives that may help.

Report In. Know your school’s attendance policies. If an absence or early dismissal is unavoidable, contact your school. If your family’s religious observances fall on school days, let teachers know early in the year which days your child will miss.

Carefully weigh sick days. If your child is sick, talk with your health care provider to determine whether they should stay home from school. If the doctor or nurse recommends that your child stay home, fi nd out exactly how long and on what conditions he or she can return to class (for example, after 24 hours of antibiotics).

Before keeping your children home, make sure they aren’t faking symptoms. Regularly feigning sickness may be a sign that your child is anxious about facing a challenge at school,

such as bullying.

Schedule wisely. Know your school’s calendar, and arrange doctor and dentist appointments after school, on weekends, or during holiday breaks, if possible. Resist the urge to schedule vacations when students will miss school. This gives students the impression that school is not a priority.

Help students complete assignments. When your child has to miss school, make arrangements with teachers

to pick up a packet of make-up work. Ensure that your child follows through, and be available to explain concepts or monitor their work. If your child’s absence will be lengthy (for surgery, for instance), alert teachers as soon as you know and pick up assignments as the days go on.

To stay on track in school, students need to be present every day. Missing 18 or more days of school in a year puts a child’s high school graduation at risk, according to BoostUp.org, a national dropout prevention campaign. Being

absent for just two days every month of the school year can put a child behind academically.
