Ms. Debbie Tipps preaching

The holiest of days …

At sundown this past Wednesday Jews began a 24

hour period of confession. This tradition dates

back to Moses and its guidelines are found in the

Old Testament book of Leviticus.

Today it is called “Yom Kippur.” In Leviticus it

was known as the “Day of Atonement.” On this

day the High Priest would enter the Holy of

Holies and offer atoning sacrifices for the sins of

the whole nation.

Individually, people were to do no work for this

24 hours. They were to fast and pray.

“Why 24 hours?” you might ask. The answer

would be because they were confessing their sins,

both remembered and not remembered, for the

past year. My best guess is that would require a

number of hours for most people!

As Christians we believe our sins were atoned for

by the shed blood of Jesus on the cross almost

2,000 years ago. While there is no need of our

setting aside 24 hours for confession, it is

probably a good idea for us to pause often and

confess our sins, both known and unknown.

Like the Jews we serve a God who is holy and

righteous, a God who sets the bar fairly high for

us to live up to.

Like the Jews we often fall short and must come

repentant before a holy God.

Like the Jews we also serve a God who is

merciful and seeks to forgive us and restore our

broken relationship.

May you find holy days in your life, days of

seeking and knowing the presence, the peace, the

power, the joy, and the love of God.

In His Immense Love,

David

You’re Invited… Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth FUMC Field Trip: Thursday, November 1

Named for the location where the first scrolls were discovered in Israel in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls are considered by many scholars to be the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times. They are 1,000 years older than the oldest complete Hebrew Bible known before their discovery. Portions of the Scrolls are on exhibit at SBTS. The exhibition seeks to demonstrate how the Dead Sea Scrolls revolutionized the study of Christianity and Judaism. The cost for the trip will be $35 per adult, and $28 for seniors. We will take the FUMC bus and plan to depart at 8 am on November 1. We will stop for lunch in Ft. Worth before viewing the exhibit. Lunch is not included in the cost of the trip. Please contact Debbie Tipps if you are interested in this exciting field trip. (903) 657-6588 or [email protected].

Blessings to each one of you,

Our family is very thankful to all of you that took the time and expense to repair our septic

system. Words cannot explain how grateful we

are—we will always be thankful. We are always

willing to help you if you ever need our help.

May God bless each one of you.

Sincerely,

The Canenguez Family

Dear FUMC Friends,

Your gift of $2,500 for the HISD Backpack

program, to the East Texas Food Bank. will

feed many.

Your generosity will help the East Texas Food

Bank provide food and hope for young and old

alike. It means so much to those in our

community who face the difficult days of

hunger. You can trust the East Texas Food

receive. In fact, more than $.95 of every

$1.00 goes directly to our programs and

services that help hungry people.

Thank you for creating such a real and tangible

difference for your neighbors struggling with

hunger right now.

Sincerely,

Dennis J. Cullinane

Youth Choir is Back!!

For the first time in many years we

have begun a Youth Choir here at FUMC.

We have had 16 youth give of their time

and talents to serve our God. If you know

of someone between 6th and 12th grade,

please encourage them to come to the

choir room at 5pm Sunday nights just

before Youth and be a part of this new

ministry! With your help, we will see

them leading us in worship in the very

near future!

A huge thank you goes out to the whole church for rallying behind this

new area of ministry in the music department. We are currently teaching 40

fourth and fifth graders the beginnings of guitar, drums, keyboard and voice in

our Rock & Roll after school program, and with your help we have received

donations to purchase instruments for them.

As a result, we are already seeing new families begin to come to church.

We have younger siblings joining the Wednesday Night Friends Children's

Choir, as well as visiting Sunday mornings. Just more proof that we are on the

right track and sharing the love of Christ through music in this community!

Well Done Church!

More donations are still needed for the spring semester for keyboards. If

you would like to donate, please drop off used keyboards at the church office,

or for monetary donations place “rock and roll” in the memo line of your check.

Thank you!!

The Great Pumpkin Patch

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church invites you and your family

to come see the wonder of the hundreds of pumpkins on our

church grounds. Walk through God’s bountiful harvest of

pumpkins of all shapes and sizes that make up our Great

Pumpkin Patch.

The Patch is open for your enjoyment throughout October,

with activities for children on Sunday afternoons, rain or

shine. Pumpkins are for sale Thursdays, Saturdays and

Sundays. Photo opportunities abound, so bring your

camera.

For more information on hours and planned activities, call

(903) 657-3154.

See you in the Patch!

This month we would like you to meet:

Mallory Lees. Ms. Mallory, or MalMal, as the little

friends call her, is one of our toddler

teachers. She is also our staff/board

liaison this year. This is her third year at

our preschool. Ms. Mallory has a

daughter, Addi, and she enjoys cooking

in her free time.

She says this about FUMC Preschool: “I

love walking in the door each day to a

class shouting my name. Each day is

filled with learning, laughter, and joy at

FUMC Preschool!”

Altar Flowers

If you would like to provide altar flowers for the traditional worship service in honor or memory of someone or in celebration of a special event, please
