city and those left behind do not have transportation or have

could be returned as a Park for the people, not a Car-Park as it
has become. SOLUTION Slide 12 Weather Contingency for Domain events
The Domain hosts the largest events in New Zealand over the Summer
months. The Stadium could serve as an indoor contingency for large
outdoor events in situations of poor weather. Encourage more events
as risks could be better managed. SOLUTION Slide 13 Parnell-Domain
Connection Parnell once bordered the Domain, now the railway line
divides the two. Connections over the rail via the Stadium could
seamlessly connect Parnell to the Domain and provide safe access
day and night. People from Parnell could walk or cycle to the
Domain and save the use of the car. Similarly Parnell is made more
immediately accessible to hospital staff during their lunch breaks.
SOLUTION Slide 14 University-Domain connection New Zealands largest
University has little in the way of sports fields and large open
spaces. The University is disconnected with the nearby Domain by
SH16 and limited pedestrian and cycle connection. Bridge
Connections over the SH16 via the Stadium could seamlessly connect
University to the Domain and provide safe access day and night.

oldest suburb but it is islanded by the infrastructure of SH16 and
the railway. The Stadium could connect via servicing bridges the
Domain and CBD to Parnell The area near the corner of Beach Road
and Stanley St could be developed into an entertainment area
SOLUTION Slide 16 Greenway access from Stadium to Queen St SOLUTION
View today from what could be the main entrance of the Stadium
looking towards the CBD a pedestrian greenway all the way to the
Queen St via University campus & Albert Park. This convenient
passage would put Auckland on show to tourists. Slide 17 Turn the
armpit into a circus Major cities have centres for night
entertainment. Often these areas have video walls, and places of
focus such as round-a-bouts eg. New York Times Square, Shibuya
Square (Tokyo), Piccadilly Circus (London). The areas in the
vicinity of Beach Road/Stanley St is an opportunity for a key
pedestrian connection point but now devoid of design. Could develop
into a visually exciting place by Carlaw park this role as a place

Hobson Carlaw Park Auckland was born as a Park in July 1840 as the
space between two streams -the Waipapa (Parnell), and the Waiparuru
(Grafton). The historic meeting place where the two streams met is
in front of Carlaw Park. The streams could be Daylighted and
featured in the design of the stadium (eg. Frank Lloyd Wrights
Falling Water) to embed place making into the Stadium design.

Park and the Mainline Steam Sites were part of the Domain. This map

Waipapa Stream in 1850s. The 1914 Railway line defines the Domain
today. Over 4.3 hectares has gone missing from the Domain since

boundary was a Brook (ie. Waipapa Stream). Similarly Claybrook is
named for its Waipapa stream association. Parnells Claybrook House

retained as a heritage park, and front lawn for Parnell, where the

expand Parnell to embrace the Domain. The allies could become

daylighted and the natural heritage of Aucklands beginnings
