You don’t haveto stay at schoolRaising the Participation Age…Young people will now have to stay in some form of learning until they are 18 years of age.

But this does not mean young people must stay on at school. There are several other optionsavailable at Carlisle College including:

• Continue in full time education at the College

• Become an Apprentice and learn in the workplace

2 InterviewYou will receive a letter within 10 working days, inviting you to come to the College todiscuss the course you have applied for with a tutor from your chosen course area.

3 OfferAfter your interview you will be made a conditional offer of a place at College. This may be dependant on your exam results.

4 AcceptanceDon’t forget to accept your place at College.

Carlisle College has many years of experience working in partnership with leading employersthroughout the North of England and South West Scotland. The Work Experience Team worksacross the College to help students find relevant, realistic and enjoyable opportunities.

Benefit to Students

Work experience can increase your employment potential, helping you in a number of ways. It will:

• Increases your confidence and improves your communication skills and ability to work with others.

• Establishes an understanding of different job roles and potential career opportunities.

Improving Mathsand EnglishDespite their importance in gaining any kind of work, around a fifth of youngpeople are never taught Maths and English after failing to achieve a GCSEpass at school.

At Carlisle College we will help you achieve your GCSE in Maths and English because we know howimportant it is for your future.

Not only will we help and support you to achieve your grades, we will also show you how learningMaths and English can be enjoyable!

• 16 – 19 year old student with grade E or below at GCSE inMaths and/or English - Work towards Functional Skills qualificationsto further develop their skills in preparation for GCSE.

• 16 – 19 year old student with a GCSE grade D in Mathsand/or English - Work towards GCSE qualification, grade C or above.

• 16 – 19 year old student with a GCSE grade A* – C in Mathsand/or English - Provided with the opportunity to develop higher levelskills if appropriate to future plans.

• Full time student aged 19+ - Provided with the opportunity to worktowards Maths and/or English qualifications either alongside their 16 – 18year old peers or within a discrete adult class.

• Part time student aged 19+ - Provided with the opportunity to worktowards Maths and/or English within a discrete adult class.

Student ServicesSo you’ve made the smart move and applied for a course at Carlisle College…Here is some of the support and advice you will need to make the most of yourtime with us.

Additional help and financial support may alsobe available from the 16-18 Bursary Fund or the19+ Discretionary Learner Support Fund. Forthose studying a Higher Education course atthe College, help may be available fromStudent Services.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

If you are over 24 and starting a furthereducation course at Level 3 or above on orafter 1 August 2015 you may qualify for a 24+Advanced Learning Loan for courses starting inSeptember 2015. It’s easy to apply for,household income isn’t taken into account andthere is no credit check.

Importantly you won’t have to pay anythingback until your income is over £21,000 per year.

The loan will be paid directly to the College onyour behalf. You will not need to pay anythingup front for your course fees. The Collegereceives an allocation of funds to help with thecost of registered childcare and to support youwith travel costs while you are at College. Thisfund does not support the provision of kitwhich may be required to those aged over 24studying at Level 3.

Army Bursary Scheme

If you are aged between 16 and 32, applying fora Further Education course at Level 2 or aboveand are hoping to start a career in the Army atthe end of your course, the Army BursaryScheme may offer financial support for yourstudies. For further information contact yourlocal Army Careers Office.

Financial Advice and Support

Looking forward to coming to College but worried about money? Don’t be. We have fundingavailable to help you out and a team of friendly staff who can answer any questions or concernsyou may have. This includes questions about transport, course fees, Further Education (FE) &Higher Education (HE) loans, debts & budgeting and much more.

Parents’ / CarersInformationYour son or daughter will meet regularly withtheir Tutor who will offer support on manyissues that can affect their student life andexperience. These meetings include group andone-to-one sessions and cover topics includingpersonal safety, health and social issues. Thetutorial programme also helps studentsprepare for the next stage of life, whether it iswork, another course or University.

Progress Reviews

Course Tutors will organise these one-to-onereviews during the year to help monitorstudent progress. Support is given to ensurethat every student has the best chance ofsuccess and can achieve their full potential. Itis also an opportunity for students to discussany issues they have at College.

Parents’ Evening

Parents and Carers (for full time studentsunder the age of 18) will be invited to meet

with staff on Parents’ Evenings. This willinclude an opportunity to discuss progress atCollege. Written reports will be sent to Parentsand Carers of students under the age of 18.

Additional Support

Staff are on hand to discuss a variety of supportoptions to help you succeed in your studies. Ourstaff are trained to offer support in:

• Severe to mild learning difficulties

• Deaf and hearing impaired

• Specific learning difficulties

• Basic Skills needs

• Blind and visually impaired

• Exam concessions

Before starting a course, your son/daughter willtake an initial assessment. This is to ensure thatthey are on the right course at the right level. Itcan also help identify any additional supportneeds they may have.

Full time further education students who are under 19 at the start of theircourse receive FREE tuition.

Students in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance (including partner where theclaim is joint) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in the workrelated activity group may be eligible for FREE tuition.

Help and advice on all aspects of transport and financial help for eligiblestudents will also be available.

Advice on student loans for HE including fees and living expenses.

Information on FE loans for adults aged 24+ studying at Level 3 or higher.

The success of our 6th Form is built arounddedication to study and offers the levels ofsupport that students need to make sure theysucceed in the transition from school to college.

We strive to meet the individual needs of allstudents to make sure they achieve their goals.Students are set realistic targets based on theirresults at 16 and progress is regularlymonitored by course Tutors.

‘A’ Levels and Level 3 courses at CarlisleCollege make our students betterprepared for University and employment.The College offers an adult environmentin which students can learn and grow toachieve their potential.

3 ‘A’ Levels and 1 ‘AS’ Level should usuallybe taken for full time study.

Level 3 courses can carry up to 420 UCASpoints.

About this courseYou will study the grammar and history of theEnglish language in written and spoken forms,develop your own writing styles for differentaudiences and analyse a range of written andspoken texts. You will also study languageacquisition, journalism etymology, politicalcorrectness and language acquisition.

What can I do next?This subject enables entry to university for artsor social science degree courses. English is acore National Curriculum subject for all thoseinterested in the teaching profession. Access to HigherEducation DiplomaThe Access course is a nationally recognised qualification for adult students(aged over 19). It is designed to provide the skills, knowledge and confidencerequired to progress onto a Degree or Diploma in Higher Education in abroad range of academic and vocational subjects. The course has excellentlinks with all local providers of Higher Education and universities nationally.

What Support will I getduring my study?When you start the course you will be assigned aPersonal Tutor who will meet you regularly todiscuss your progress and any issues that areconcerning you. Your progress will be carefullymonitored, supported and reviewed. Whateveryour choice of modules on the Access programmeyou will find yourself in a friendly environmentwhere close personal support, professional adviceand guidance are readily available.

Entry RequirementsBefore you start the course you will beinterviewed and undergo an initial assessment.This will help determine whether you are readyto begin study at the level or whether bridgingcourses at Level 2 would be more appropriate.

What can I do next?Excellent and well established progressionroutes are available into local and nationalDegree, Diploma, HND, HNC and FoundationDegree courses.

About this courseThis is a full time programme aimed at adultswho are returning to study or who would like toimprove their employment prospects.

About this courseIf you are not sure which subject to study or don’t think you are ready for a full Level 1 vocationalprogramme then the Steps programme is the best option for you.

The course has been specially designed to prepare you to progress into Further Education orinto employment.

You will study the award and certificate Level 1 NCFE in Employability Skills. The NCFE award isdesigned to help students explore a broad range of essential skills. These include job search skills,personal preparation for employment, self improvement and effective behaviour.

UCLAN Preparation forEducation and TrainingA ‘first step’ course designed as an initial ‘toolkit’ for trainees to commence a teaching careerin the post-16 sector. It replaces the Preparingto a Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector(PTLLS) qualification.

No teaching experience is needed and noteaching placement is required while on this course.

This is a 15 week long evening course.

UCLAN IntroductoryCertificate in Educationand TrainingAn introductory course open to applicantshoping to teach in the post 16 sector and tothose already teaching and training in theadult, community and work based sectors.

It is a requirement of the programme thatapplicants should be employed as a teacher or have a placement as a teacher, trainer ortutor for a minimum of 30 hours during theprogramme. This is in addition to other entry requirements.

Teaching should be with groups of learnersalthough one to one teaching is acceptable for up to 10 of the 30 hours.

This is a 25 week evening course.

UCLAN IntermediateCertificate in Teaching,Learning andAssessmentAn intermediate course open to applicantshoping to teach in the post 16 sector and tothose already teaching and training in theadult, community and work based sectors.

It is a requirement of the programme thatapplicants should be employed or have ateaching placement as a teacher, trainer ortutor for a minimum of 75 hours during theprogramme. This is in addition to the otherentry requirements.

Teaching should be across more than one levelwith a variety of learners. Teaching must becarried out predominantly with groups oflearners though one to one for up to 10 hoursis acceptable.

This is a 32 week evening course.

UCLAN Entry Requirements(for all the above courses)• 5 GCSE at grades A* to C or equivalent. Mustincluding English Language

• A minimum of a level 3 qualification in theteaching vocational subject specialism

• A level 4 qualification for academic subjects

• The ability to communicate fluently andconfidently in English

Note: Applicants who do not have an EnglishGCSE grade A* to C will be required tosuccessfully complete the university diagnostictest prior to entry. Work experience andoccupation/professional certificates may beconsidered as an alternative to having a level 3qualification in the subject specialism.

I really enjoyed my time at CarlisleCollege and the knowledge and skills Ihave gained have been very useful atuniversity and on my internship in a5* hotel.

The length of a traineeship would reflect thespecific needs of participants, but they areexpected to last around six months.

It is proposed that the programme will include:

• High- quality work experience

• Studies in English and Maths for those whoneed them

• Work preparation training (for examplewriting a CV or preparing for an interview)

Entry Criteria • are not currently in a job and have little workexperience, but who are focussed on work orthe prospect of it

• are 16-19 and qualified below level 3, or 19 to23 years of age and have not yet achieved aLevel 2

Traineeships are available for young people aged16 to 23 and for young people with LearningDifficulty Assessments up to the age of 25.

What are the benefits of aTraineeship?A traineeship will put you in a better position tocompete for an Apprenticeship or other job.

The opportunity to build your CV and get vitalexperience with employers.

Improving your English and Maths skills willboost your chances of getting a job, as well asimproving your long term prospects andearning potential.
