Superbstandards and happychildren make Carlton the idealschool for her children, says Samina

First class

Samina and her husband chose Carlton for their children because they were very impressed by the school’s OFSTED report.

“Carlton is a fantastic school, with a very good OFSTED report,” says Samina.

“The staff are great and the Headteacher is excellent and very friendly. Ahyan was at St. John’s Infants School in Dewsbury until Year Two and started at Carlton in Year Three. Although the class sizes are bigger at Carlton, it is not a problem as there are two teaching assistants as well as a teacher and he is doing well.”

Finding friends

Although Ahyan initially had some problems settling in at Carlton due to unfamiliar surroundings and new classmates, he is now very happy.

“Ahyan took some time to adjust to his new school and I think it took him a while to make new friends,” recalls Samina. “However, he is now very settled at Carlton and has made lots of friends. It is definitely the best school for him and he is very happy. During this difficult time for him, all the teaching and support staff were very helpful.

“The children love playing out in the big playground, and I like the fact that the younger children have a smaller, separate area to play in. As long as my children are happy, that is all that matters to me.”

Caring staff

Carlton provides a safe and stimulating environment for children, and the staff are always happy to talk to parents.

“Communication is very good at the school,” says Samina. “Whenever there is a parents’ meeting the teachers explain everything to us very well and if there are ever any problems I know I can call them and they will always answer quickly and help

me. For example, when Ahyan lost one or two of his things I got in touch with the school and they soon sorted it out and found the things for me. On another occasion, because he loves maths, we asked if he could have some more maths homework to help challenge him more and they are going to do this for him.”

Making life easy

The school website contains lots of little videos to help parents keep up to date with events their children have been involved with and to help them learn the teaching methods that the staff use.

“I love looking at the reception class videos,” says Samina. “You can see what the children have been doing, such as little plays they’ve been in and things like that. When I see my daughter it makes me feel very happy.”

Safe and smart

The school uniform at Carlton gives children a real sense of belonging.

“The children always look very smart in their uniforms,” says Samina. “The Headteacher is very keen for the children to always look clean and tidy and their behavior is very good. There is also no bullying, which is great.”

Excellent education

Samina is delighted with Carlton School and says: “The children receive an excellent education and are so happy. Now that my son is older I am less involved with all his daily activities, but my daughter is in reception class and I see everything and I am so happy with the things that she does, the way the teachers explain everything and that the fact that nothing is ever forced. The teachers go out of their way to talk nicely to the children and to help them understand.”

The curriculum is divided into three stages:

• Key Stage 1: from ages 5-7

• Key Stage 2: from ages 7-11

ReceptionThe Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is based on seven areas of learning:

• Personal, Social and Emotional

Development• Communication and Language• Physical Development• Literacy • Mathematics• Understanding the World

• Expressive Arts and Design

Key Stages 1-2Areas of the curriculum are:• Mathematics• English

• Science• Information and Design Technology• History• Geography• Art• Music• Physical Education• Religious Education• Health• Citizenship• Personal and Social Education.

HomeworkHomework is a bridge that joins schools and parents. From the school’s perspective there is the opportunity to monitor your child’s independent progress. For you as parents, there is the potential to gain a greater appreciation of education and to express positive attitudes towards your children’s achievement. We therefore encourage you to check your child’s book bag and reading record book regularly to check on homework tasks.

NurtureTo ensure children can confidently and quickly integrate into school life, we run the School Ready Program whereby parents and new starters are invited to take part in an induction curriculum. This is a very successful and beneficial to our new starters.

In addition we run transition activities throughout school including our Secondary Ready Program.

Tyra wanted the bestschool for Hassan, and foundit in Carlton Junior & Infant School

Thorough research

Tyra and Amjad were extremely thorough in researching the best school for Hassan.

“Like any parent I wanted the best for Hassan,” says Tyra. “I visited local schools and looked at OFSTED reports, but we chose Carlton as we were so impressed with it, even though it equates to around an eight-mile daily round trip”

Early Years Learning

The Early Years team at Carlton made a big impression on Tyra.

“When we visited I thought the Early Years team was brilliant,” she says. “I looked at the work books the children were using and the school’s website. I liked what the children are encouraged to get involved with. The foundation years can influence the rest of a child’s academic life, and for me there was no competition – Carlton was the school for Hassan.”

Teaching assistants

There are two teaching assistants in Hassan’s class, making the pupil:staff ratio very favourable. They are extremely supportive to both parents and pupils.

“Because there are two teaching assistants in Hassan’s class, which means the children gain quality attention and time from adults,” Tyra explains. “And they are achieving great results. Hassan’s group has already completed their target for phonics and the staff are finding them extra work to help further enhance their learning. Any children who require additional support also receive it, that so they achieve to their best ability.”

Attention to detail

The facilities at Carlton are excellent, but little extras make a big difference.

“The school has everything that you would expect, such as phonics and numerics equipment and white boards,” says Tyra. “However, the attention

to detail is outstanding. For example the school provides the children with wet suits and sand suits and wellies for play. The children also have a lovely reading corner and a little area in the classroom to display their work.”

Making learning fun

Hassan enjoys all of the activities at Carlton, and is learning as he plays.

“The children have very focused learning and think they are playing but they are actually learning through using different materials,” says Tyra. “At Carlton it’s all about making learning fun. The children play with jigsaws and puzzles, and also do things like sewing buttons etc to help develop their fine motor skills. Carlton caters for the needs of all children.”

Picture perfect

Young children are encouraged to recognise their names with pictures and words.

“The school puts a picture of each child on their water bottle, as well as their written name so that they can find things easily when they go in,” says Tyra. “They also have picture names on a lollypop stick, which each child finds every morning and places in little envelopes with their name and picture on. This is an effective daily routine for self-registration and the child is recognising their name. This is an example of the attention to detail that I like.”

Looking ahead

Tyra is delighted with Hassan’s progress.

“I really recommend Carlton,” she says. “Communication is great, the staff are wonderful, and the children are encouraged to work although they think they are playing. Hassan has pieces of homework to complete a few times a week, which helps to prepare him for his future learning and he enjoys doing it. Children are also taken on enjoyable trips; a recent one been attending the pantomime. It’s a great school!”

To extend the curriculum, and make learning even more fun, we offer many trips and activities. Recent trips have included:• Reception visit to Sundown

Christmas Adventure Park

• Year 1 trip to Bridlington

• Year 2 trip to Thackray Medical Museum

• Year 3 visit to Batley Art Gallery

• Year 4 trip to the Yorkshire Coal Mining Museum

• Year 4 visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester

• Year 5 visit to Dunstan Hall in Leeds

• Year 6 end of year trip is decided by the children every year

Mosaic ProjectThe school also participates in the Mosaic Project, which aims to raise children’s aspirations by inviting volunteer mentors to act as role models. By linking young people with inspirational role models we help to boost their self-confidence and future employability.

Special Educational Needs We are committed to a broad and balanced curriculum for all our pupils. Our Special Needs Co-ordinator ensures that the school provides the best support possible for children identified as having special needs. We discuss any support plans with parents and provide regular feedback on progress. External agencies may need to be consulted on some occasions, but only with prior consent from parents.

Access

Children with a physical disability are fully supported in accessing all parts of the school.

Gifted and talented childrenWe recognise that all children are individuals with their own specific needs, gifts and talents. Children who are identified as being exceptionally able or talented, are monitored and provided with stimulating and enriching lessons appropriate to their needs.

Celebrating diversityWe celebrate diversity and ensure equality at all levels. We aim to create a very supportive and caring environment where each child can develop the confidence to realise their ambitions, achieve their potential and realise the endless opportunities as future citizens of the 21st century.

Your child’s achievementsWe will let you know how your child is progressing at regular intervals, and you may be invited to welcome meetings and ‘meet and greet’ assemblies.

Talk to teacher

We also invite parents and children each term to come into to school talk to teachers to discuss their child’s progress. However, parents are welcome to speak to the school at any time if they have any concerns. We have an ‘open door ‘policy and parents are always welcome to discuss any questions or concerns with their child’s teacher.

Samira chose Carlton over other local schools because the quality of teachingissogood

Positive progress

delighted with the progress her daughter has made.

“Carlton is a really lovely school and I have seen so many positive changes in Humayra in the couple of months since she started,” says Samira. “Her progress and behaviour have been great.”

Simply the best

Samira and Sadiq visited other schools, but felt that Carlton would provide the best learning experiences for Humayra.

“We chose Carlton even though it is a 20-minute walk away, because we were impressed by the curriculum, We thought the teachers were good and it has an excellent OFSTED report,” says Samira. “We wanted the very best for our daughter and this is definitely the right school for her.”

Quality education

Carlton’s OFSTED report noted that pupils from different cultural backgrounds, including those at an early stage of learning English, achieve well. This is something that Samira can confirm.

“Carlton is a nice, modern school and is attended by children from so many different cultures,” she says. “Every child is different and I like the fact that the school treats them all as individuals.”

Learning is fun!

Each day the teachers plan interesting activities for the children to make learning fun.

“My daughter absolutely loves her lessons and wants to go to school every day,” says Samira. “When the school holidays start she is sad, because although she likes being at home, she loves school so much! I’ve never heard her say that she doesn’t want to go. The teachers are really good at thinking of different approaches to learning, and do their best to make everything fun.”

Book club

Children at Carlton are encouraged to read as much as possible and to enjoy the experience.

“As well as phonics and maths, Humayra loves to read and she is in a little book club,” says Samira. “She can read the books on-line at home if she wants to and the teachers will know what she has been reading. They make it fun for the children by asking them to complete little quizzes or answer questions about what they have read and then give them little rewards to help kept them motivated.”

Professional approach

Staff at Carlton work hard to help all children achieve the school’s motto: “Dream, aspire, achieve.”

“The teachers are lovely,” says Samira. “They are very professional, but also very friendly and approachable, which is particularly important for very young children. The teachers are always thinking of different techniques to help the children understand things and speak to them in a very friendly way, so the children love them and want to learn. I have had no problems at the school but if I ever did I know they would always make time for me.”

Second generation

One of the highest recommendations for a school is when a parent is planning to send their child’s siblings to the same place.

“I am always recommending Carlton to other parents, even though it is quite a distance for me to walk,” says Samira, “I don’t care about the distance, because it is so good. The foundation stage of a child’s learning is important and I am so happy that Humayra enjoys school so much. She has also been on lots of fun trips, and it’s amazing how much the children do. As soon as my second daughter turns four I will definitely send her to Carlton!”

What Humayra says:

“I love painting and maths and I love my teachers and learning!”

Something for everyoneWe are very proud of the wonderful choice of school club opportunities for children at Carlton, which are run by a dedicated team of teachers. We hope there is something for everyone. The range of activities is all part of a core philosophy to broaden children’s learning and to value breadth of achievement. Our aim is to help children find their personal strengths and a love of learning in all its forms.

Examples of clubs include:

• Archery

• Chess

• Football

• Cricket

• Dance

• Study Support

• Cooking

SportAs well as following the Physical Education programme of work as set out in the National Curriculum, there are many opportunities for your children to enjoy extracurricular sport and team games. For example, pupils have taken part in the ‘Mission Active’ sporting event in Huddersfield, the swimming gala at Dewsbury Sports Centre and our football teams regularly play against other school teams.
