Carlton Speak 2012 Carlton Public School E-Bulletin
Term 4 - Week 7 Thursday 22 November 2012
Dear Parents and Carers
It has been very heartening and rewarding to see how many parents and other family members have supported
recent school events. The recent success of the Kidsmatter Art Exhibition was followed up this week with
wonderful support for the Night of the Stars that showed off the wide variety of talent that our students
have in the Performing Arts. The crowd enjoyed some fantastic dancing, instrumental music, singing, magic, kung
fu and even hoola hoop performances. See below for the pictures and report. Congratulations to all the
participants for the great effort in preparing the performances and to Mrs O‟Grady, Miss Flowers and Ms
Rasmussen for their organisation along with the outstanding technical assistance and equipment provided by
Mike Pappas.
Of course we have another family event tomorrow evening when the Movie Night will finally be conducted. We
are expecting over 500 people and so you will need to come prepared with your seating or ground cover to sit on.
All the final ticketing, food and start time details are included below in the P& C News section. It is very
important that you realise that individual children cannot attend without adult supervision. This event will be a
great way to celebrate the success of all the Kidsmatter initiatives this year that have focused on improving
the level of parent participation and the community feeling of being included in school events.
We are nearing the end of the year with many important events being conducted to complete a very successful
year. Please take careful note of the dates and times of the presentation ceremonies. Some of the times and
arrangements have changed from past years:
Wednesday 12 December - Presentation Awards Day Y3-6, 9.15 – 11.00am
Wednesday 12 December - Presentation Awards Day K-2, 11.45am – 1.00pm
These two ceremonies will be separated by a Parent/Staff Morning Tea that will be held in the library
at 11.00am on Wednesday 12 December
Friday 14 December - Sports Awards Presentation Day 9.00 – 11.00 am. (This ceremony will commence
as soon as possible after 9.00am)
Congratulations
Kane Q and Damian C from 5/6F who participated in the
Regional Final of the Number Crunchers competition at
the Powerhouse Museum this Week
To Jordon Z, 3/4E & Daiyan M, 5/6S for their
outstanding entries in the Poetry Object Competition.

School Banking
New banking competition – win an iPad mini!
This is an easy competition for all school bankers to enter. Children just need to make a deposit at school on a
Tuesday between November 19 and December 14. Our final school banking day this year is December 11 so
students at Carlton have three more weeks to enter. There are 12 iPad minis to be won – each valued at $369.
Posters advertising the competition can be seen on the school noticeboard near the office. Terms and
conditions can be found at www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
3/4E winners again!
Congratulations to 3/4E who were the winners of the Dollarmites Achievement Certificate this week. This
award is given each week to the class who has the most children banking each Tuesday.
Deposit Books
At this time of year many children need a new deposit book. Our stocks have currently run out but hopefully
new deposit books should arrive by next week. If your child needs a new book send in their deposit with a note
in their wallet and a deposit slip in their new book will be filled out.
Rewards
Handballs and wallets are no longer available through the redemption program. They were extremely popular
prizes. If your child claimed one of these prizes this week tokens would have been returned with a note asking
your child to choose another reward.
Happy banking!
The Robotic Laundry Maid (RLM) The Robotic laundry machine can change your life forever. It will take away
those tedious tasks that nobody likes to do. The main functionality of the
RLM is the washing of your dirty laundry.
How does it work?
One push of a button and the RLM is in action. It has a built-in washing
machine so when it comes across any dirty clothes it can pick them up and
put them straight into the washer with its extendable arms. It can sort out
all the dirty clothes into blacks, whites, towels and linen. It can also sense
the appropriate wash cycle that is required. Once the wash cycle is
complete, it takes out the washing, puts it in a basket and even hangs it on
the line! It is also aware of how long it takes to for clothes to dry. Once
they are dry it takes them off the line and folds them into another basket,
ready to be taken back to the appropriate wardrobes.
You will never have to pick up, wash or put away washing ever again! What a
dream come true! You can say goodbye to washing and say hello to the RLM.

Poetry Object
In Term 3, 3/4E and 5/6S wrote poems for the Poetry Object Competition,
organised by the Red Room Company. We were two of the lucky finalists.
On 15 November, we attended the presentation night at the State Library of
NSW with our families. The Governor of NSW, Her Excellency Marie Bashir,
and other famous people and poets were there.
The Governor started the ceremony by presenting a speech, congratulating The
Poetry Object project. She spoke about how young poets are the next
generation of poets that will shine around the world, representing Australia.
Then the Governor started encouraging children who have the talent as well as
the children who don‟t, to write more poems. With a final word, she declared the
exhibition officially open.
Then Mr Julian Morrow who hosted the evening announced the overall winner
and the runner up of the Poetry Object Competition. The winning poem was “The
Magic Cat”. After Mr. Morrow announced the winning teacher poem, he gave Her
Excellency a gift on behalf of the Red Room Company. Then there was a short
break. After that, certificates were presented to all the finalists.
We were very happy when our names were announced. We were honoured to be
part of such a wonderful project and, although we didn‟t win, we were still happy.
The smiles on our parents‟ faces were all we needed right then. Mrs Churcher
and Mrs McElroy, who attended the evening, were delighted for us too.

Tin Can Telephones The students in 5T have been studying the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell and were
learning how he came to invent this apparatus. It is said that the first words spoken over a telephone by
Alexander Graham Bell to his colleague Mr Watson was “Mr Watson come here please”. Nowadays we take the
telephone and mobile phone for granted but there was a time when there were no telephones at all!
A tin can telephone is made by joining two cans together with a piece of string. A person speaks into one can and
the other person listens with the other can. The voice sets a vibration along the string and the voice can be
heard on the other end. 5T has a lot of fun listening to each other‟s voices and discussing why we could be heard
in the can and not just in the classroom.

The Night of the Stars- A Night of Spectacular Performances Congratulations to all the students who performed in Tuesday night‟s „Night of the
Stars‟. It was certainly a very entertaining evening. Performances ranged from
beautifully choreographed dances (modern, tap, Bollywood style, Kung Fu and belly
dancing); to superb playing of musical instruments (piano, violin, cello, organ);
talented hoola hoop dancing; amazing vocal performances; and a
terrific magic show. Carlton Public School certainly has so many
talented students. Thank you to Miss Flowers and Mrs O‟Grady
for co-ordinating the evening. Also thank you to Mr Pappas for
organizing the fantastic lighting and sound equipment. It made
the evening all the more special.
