Principal’s Report

Dear Parents & Carers,

One of the best school community events last year was the Father’s Matter Breakfast. We hope it will be just

as exciting and as much fun in 2013. I hope you have received the invitation below.

To respond to the invitation please return the slip which is included again at the end of this newsletter.

You will also receive a request from the P&C for helpers on the day. A little bit of help from a large number of

people will mean a really successful time for everyone.

As part of the day we will be featuring some special White Ribbon awareness raising activities. Everyone who

comes to the event is being asked to wear a white shirt, t-shirt or top. We will also be creating a special White

Ribbon garden by asking each Dad or other male attending the BBQ with their child, to purchase and plant a

small white annual flower ($2) that will make a really colourful display by the time White Ribbon Day occurs in

November. It should look great!

Important Reminders Information has been sent to you about the Y2-6 Special Swimming Scheme to be held from 8 October

until 18 October. This is one of the most important events in the school year. Your child’s safety and

enjoyment in and around water can be improved a great deal by participation in this learn to swim program.

Limited places are available and you should return the permission slip quickly to ensure a spot for your child.

The Stage 2 & 3 Camps are rapidly approaching. All payments and the return of medical and permission

notes need to be finalised immediately to ensure that our preparations for a successful trip are completed

well before the departure date on 18 September.

The school is progressively updating the health care details of all students in the school as part of a

computer system upgrade by the Department of Education and Communities. This is occurring in all schools.

If you have recently received a health details request letter it is very important that it is returned to the

school so that we have the very latest information needed to provide safe and correct care for your child.

Congratulations To everyone involved in the very successful K-2 Athletics Carnival held this

week. The pictures below show what a great day it was.

To our dancers and choir members who did such an outstanding job as part of

the St George Performing Arts Festival last week. Again, see some pictures

below.

To our successful PSSA teams who participated in the semi-finals.

Congratulations to the Senior A Division 1 Girls’ Netball team; Senior Girls’

Soccer team and Senior Boys’ Rugby League team who will represent our

school in the grand final on Friday 16 August.

Regards,

Steve Cooper

Principal

P&C News

P&C Meeting

The P&C meeting was held on Tuesday night with a reasonable roll-up for a winter’s evening. It was exciting to

hear about Google Apps and how the P&C can use this to connect with the school community in a better way. A

small group of interested parents will be meeting in the next couple of weeks to work out what information we

can include and talk about the possibilities for the future.

It was also decided to return to the usual second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm for our monthly P&C

meetings. We realise this decision won’t suit everyone but our daytime meetings were for a trial period only.

While our daytime parent forums with a focus topic were well attended the daytime P&C meetings didn’t attract

enough parents to be able to make decisions. We are still investigating the ways we can make P&C meetings

more attractive to attend including the possibility of introducing child-care if it is viable.

Fathers Matter Breakfast

The Fathers Matter breakfast will be held on Friday, 30 August, 2013 from 7.30am. Families will be able to

enjoy breakfast together and participate in lots of fun activities and raise funds for the school too. All

breakfast orders will need to be back at school by Wednesday, 28 August.

This year two tickets will be issued for each family member ordering breakfast ie: one ticket for food and one

ticket for a drink. When ordering, remember a family ticket for $20 can be purchased for immediate family

members only eg. parents/guardians and children from the same family. Additional family members and/or

friends eg. uncles, cousins, grandparents etc. will need to purchase individual tickets at $5 each. Tickets will

begin to be issued next week.

Of course initiatives such as this one don’t run themselves and the P&C will be seeking help on the day to

prepare, cook and serve the breakfast. A note requesting your help will be sent home this week. If you can

help, why wait for the note just send us an email at [email protected]

Parenting Seminar – “How to Bully-Proof Children’.

A seminar that will give parents and care-givers practical strategies for dealing with bullying will be held on

Tuesday, 3 September at 9.15am. Morning tea will be provided and there will be a small charge of $5 that

will contribute towards the cost of the presenter and a manual for each participant. This seminar will be

subsidized by the P&C. A note will be sent home next week.

Date for the Diary – Family Portraits

By request we organized this popular event during the warmer part of the year. Family portrait day will be

Sunday, 20 October. Tell your friends and family about it. Flyers will be sent out by the end of term.

School Banking

Rewards

Rewards are rolling out the door this term – especially the torches and calculators. Please remember to order

rewards using the 2013 redemption sheet. Only the 2012 Pen pod reward is available (until stocks are

exhausted).

A few reminders:

• Please fill in deposit slips – both sides. If you are depositing a cheque, details of the cheque need to be filled

in on the reverse of the slip.

• Please remove tokens each week (keep them in a safe place) and only send them back in when you have

collected ten tokens together with a 2013 redemption slip.

• Unfortunately the bank won’t accept foreign coins so these will be returned if they are sent in.

finalise your list of books by 23rd August.

Club Kidpreneur The Club Kidpreneur Foundation is a not-for-profit social enterprise set up by entrepreneur Creel Price seeking

to encourage entrepreneurial thinking in primary-aged children on a national level. The foundation’s mission is to

help kids start and grow their own enterprises in order to create an entrepreneurial spirit of learning and

cooperating with their peers. The Stage 3 leaders were inspired by Creel Price at this year’s Young Leaders Day

way back in March. Creel spoke about starting a business when he was our age and that is the inspiration behind

this project.

Over 30 Stage 3 students have been busy working through learning modules with Miss Flowers and Mrs King.

After completing the modules each group was given a toolbox full of materials to start a business. Each group

has designed a business plan, registered a company name, logo and other marketing materials. They have also

been busy hand making their products. The aim of this program is to donate all money raised to charity, as this

is what good global citizens do.

Each group will be selling their unique and original products in the coming weeks and everyone will have the

opportunity to purchase key-rings, greeting cards, candles, bracelets and picture frames. The best part of this

is that when you purchase one of these products you also help children in developing countries get many of the

things that we all take for granted, such as clean drinking water, reading books, food, and an education.

As a student taking part in this outstanding program, Club Kidpreneur has:

1. Helped me understand what it is to be a business owner and taught me the value of money;

2. Made me consider entrepreneurial business as a career choice;

3. Helped me to develop an understanding of what is needed to run a successful business ;

4. Provided me with a safe and secure opportunity to practise business skills;

5. Encouraged creativity and experimentation in making products and establishing a business;

6. Fostered initiative, responsibility and learning from success in the entrepreneurial journey;

7. Developed entrepreneurial spirit for social and environmental good through helping those who are less

fortunate than myself.
