Dear Parents and Carers, Student Safety A letter was sent home earlier in the week encouraging everyone to take extra care as you walk and drive around the school. Most importantly, please keep calm and exercise self- control when parking issues arise. It is essential that all road safety and parking laws are followed. I am aware that due to recent incidents around schools, the police and RTA have increased their patrols to ensure student safety. Thank you for your cooperation. Dance Sport Thank you and congratulations to Ms Newman and Mrs Elmir for organising the afternoon Dance Sport program. This program has involved interested Year 5 students learning ballroom dancing and performing at a regional competition at Homebush. You would have seen a sample of their talents at the concerts held recently. Please see additional article included with this newsletter about this spectacular program. School Security School Security and student safety has been an issue of discussion in P&C meetings for several months. I have organised a few companies to quote on CCT video and possibly electronic security gates to be installed. Please ensure that when entering the school after 9:15 am that you sign in at the office and pick up a Visitors Badge. It is exceptionally important for student safety that we monitor the entry and departure of all school visitors and helpers. Capital Upgrades A new Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) will be installed in Area 2 during October and November. Once completed a very large synthetic games court will be installed under the COLA. Additionally, through the P&C we are applying for grants to install an environment playground space within the school. I have visited some local schools recently and picked up some excellent ideas which I will discuss with the Student Representative Council and P&C. If successful the Environmental Playground installation will commence in Term one 2020. Stage Camps are on next week Next week, we have a large number of our students and teachers attending school camp. Each of these camps have been so well organised and our teachers have volunteered to leave their families for days at a time so your children can have a unique experience, creating wonderful memories. In the past, we have been held up with unpredictable traffic when returning to the school on Friday afternoon. Stage Three Camp- A Very Early Start! STAGE 3 CAMP -Lake Burrendong Camp

Students are to assemble under the COLA on Tuesday morning of 24 September at 5am. They will need

to sit in their bus groups. It is absolutely essential that all students arrive on time as we are departing promptly at 5.30am in order to arrive on time for our expected arrival time of approximately 10:30am. We ask that parents DO NOT park from the office all the way up to the Canteen to allow enough space for the coaches to park. This will ensure that students can stow their luggage and board the buses safely and efficiently. Make sure you have checked the What to Bring note and have packed accordingly - remember NO MOBILE PHONES and pack morning tea for the first day. Students will return to school approximately around 6.30pm on Friday 27 September. Please ensure that all parents are waiting for the students when we arrive back at school. Carlton Language Teachers Well Represented

Our families and educators have always held

Carlton Public School’s Community Languages

program in high regard across NSW. We were very

pleased to have three of our teachers involved in

the development of the new Languages Curriculum

documents to be used by all NSW schools.

Mrs Sabra, Ms Hassapis and Mrs Mihajlova worked

with teachers from all over NSW at the University of

Sydney to develop syllabus documents and will

also be involved in the trials to ensure they work in

classrooms.

Carlton Public School has hosted many teachers

who are keen to visit us so they can see the

innovative things going on in our classrooms.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

Poetry Corner

4 Pink have been looking at poetry this term and have created some great poems during the term. Can you please publish the following poems in the next newsletter? This week we looked at limericks. Here are our best 2 limericks. There once was a young lad named James He was very good at trying new games. His pants caught on fire, Because he was a liar. And then he burst into fiery flames.

By James and Liam There once was a girl called Maia Who lived in the famous Shire. She did gymnastics there And once saw a bear. As you can tell, she was a very bad liar! By Maia and Bethany.

DanceSport Challenge Gala

This year Carlton Public School has been fortunate enough to be involved in the DanceSport Challenge Program. The DanceSport Challenge Program is open to all Year 5 students from NSW public schools. The DanceSport Challenge Program began in 2006 with just six schools. Since then it has grown immensely, there are now 46 schools from the Metropolitan South and Regional South Directorates participating in the program. Although the medium is ballroom dancing, the program centres around student wellbeing and ensures that all participating students are known, valued and cared for. It promotes respectful relationships through dance, particularly between the genders. During the DanceSport Challenge Program, students participate in an intensive 15-week program to learn 5 ballroom dances; comprising of the Tango, Cha Cha, Jive, Salsa and Samba. 30 students in Year 5 proudly represented Carlton Public School at the DanceSport Challenge Gala last Tuesday night 10 September, held at the Quay Centre Sydney Olympic Park. Team Carlton wowed the judges and audience; dancing the Cha Cha, Tango, Salsa, Jive and Samba under dazzling lights in a sea of colour and movement! A special shoutout to our school finalists, Juliet B. and Rubyn K. N. (Cha Cha), Lauren J. and Larry S. (Tango),

Evangeline K. and Leo M. (Salsa) and Aleksa D. and Daniel L. (Jive) who did our school proud! Under the tough

scrutiny of professional judges, these 8 children went head to head in the competition phase of the evening and

performed with class, energy and sheer joy! Carlton Public School were semi-finalists in all four dances, and were

awarded 2nd place in the Tango, 3rd place in the Cha Cha and 7th place in the Jive. This fantastic effort from our

school finalists, and all our dancers, saw Carlton Public School announced as the 3RD PLACE OVERALL SCHOOL

for 2019, closely missing out on 2nd place by 1 point.

We are immensely proud of the fantastic work that every student put in their performance last Tuesday night. We

would like to acknowledge the talents of our dance tutor, Melinda Hayes, the staff members in the audience to

cheer the students on and all of the families for supporting our school. We extend that thanks to Diana Wolsely

and Farhana Quayum for all that they have done in preparation for a wonderful Gala Evening.

We are so incredibly proud and we are already looking forward to the 2020 DanceSport season!

DanceSport Challenge Student Spotlight

Give a brief description about your DanceSport Challenge experience and what it involved.

DanceSport Challenge is an excellent dance program that allows all students, experienced and non-experienced

to learn 5 different ballroom dances, the Cha Cha, Tango, Salsa, Jive and Samba. DanceSport Challenge also

has a Gala evening after 15 weeks of dance lessons, in which you can show off all your hard work to your parents.

DanceSport Challenge involved many things these included; attending all meetings, being able to do the correct

steps, being a sensible person and respecting your partner, whilst also having fun.

Sasha L.

It was my great honour to participate in the Year 5 DanceSport Challenge. It was fun and amazing. We needed

to learn 5 different dances including Cha Cha, Tango, Salsa, Jive and Samba. The first 4 types of dance needed

a finalist to represent on behalf of the school for competition part of the Gala night. We have worked very hard

since Term 2. Everyone did their best and we have built up an amazing team. We were initially shy with each

other and then became trustful partners at the end. When the Gala evening finally arrived, we were very excited.

It was the first time Carlton Public School participated at the Gala; we were so proud of ourselves as we were the

pioneers. The whole DanceSport team danced all 5 dances. Then the finalists continued to the formal

competition. All the finalists made it through to the semi-finals. The Cha, Cha, Tango and Jive finalists made it

through to the finals. I was little bit sad because our Salsa dancers were great.

Larry S.

DanceSport Challenge was a bit of a wild ride if I were to phrase it. The experience I had was truly amazing

though. There were twists and turns at every corner as we changed up our dances a tad bit as we went along. I

would highly recommend this as it changes the way we see the opposite gender and overcome some of our fears.

Sam J.

What have you learnt from participating in the DanceSport Challenge program?

Whilst participating in the DanceSport Challenge program I have learnt to work hard, use grit and determination

as well as to learn the dances correctly and properly. Although everyone, students, teachers and parents spent

so much time and effort putting this together and making it spectacular, in the end it was all worth it and we got to

perform at the K-6 Assembly, Homebush and the KidsMatter Concert.

Sasha L.

DanceSport Challenge is a ballroom dancing program. It's where you learn moves like Cha Cha, Tango, Salsa

and Jive. It teaches you resilience and that you shouldn't give up easily.

Curtis L.

From participating in DanceSport Challenge I've learnt to have respect for other people and to actually come out

of the shell I have been cowering in.

Sam J.

What was your favourite dance to learn and why?

My favourite dance to learn was probably the Samba as I felt like I liked it the most and even though it wasn't a

finalist dance, to me it was probably the most fun and it suited me the most.

Sasha L.

I was lucky to be chosen to be the finalist for Tango, which is my favourite dance. Unlike the other dances, we

don’t need to look into each other’s eyes, we need to look serious and look away from our partner, so I was not

that nervous when I danced. I still like the other dances as well. The most difficult one is the Jive because it was

a very fast dance.

Larry S.

My favourite dance to learn was Jive.

Curtis L.

Salsa had to be my favourite dance to learn. It's fast pace was fun to match to, with added movements here and

there.

Sam J.

Page 6

What did you enjoy the most about the DanceSport Challenge program? OR What was your most

memorable moment from the DanceSport Challenge program?

The most memorable and enjoyable moment whilst participating in DanceSport Challenge would be being able to

perform in front of everyone as it is joyful and also being able to show what we have learnt.

Sasha L.

The most memorable thing for me was when we went to Olympic Park for the Gala night. There were tons and

tons of other students from other schools. I was nervous beforehand but when I saw there were many

other students who were probably feeling like me I had a wave of relief come over me.

Sam J.

This has become my favourite memory in my whole life. We have built our friendship via weekly training and

worked as a team. We have enjoyed the performances and enthusiasm for dancing and the involvement with so

many families from CPS. As a first-time participant, Carlton Public School did so well, and we came third place

overall for the whole competition.

Larry S.

How did you feel at the beginning of the DanceSport Challenge program compared to how you feel now

after participating in the program?

At the beginning of the DanceSport lesson it was so hard to learn the dances and I felt like giving up but I didn’t,

now the dances aren’t that hard anymore. The hardest dance for me to learn was probably the Jive, as it was very

fast and to master all the spins and turns was very tricky but also because I was on holiday and missed half of

the dance. Luckily, one of my friend’s helped me and that is how I learnt to do it well. Now I feel like I have

accomplished so much and I feel great and happy.

Sasha L.

At the beginning of the DanceSport program, I didn’t feel very confident doing the dances. I was quite scared

about performing at the Gala. Through practising each week, I built up the confidence and really looked forward

to the Gala.

Larry S.

At the beginning of the program I was very unsure, I felt embarrassed about the fact I had to dance with a girl. In

the end it was a normal thing the boys and I had to do for the team. I have been changed from doing the program

and I'm pretty sad it has come to an end.

Sam J.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about participating in the DanceSport Challenge program

next year?

If someone wanted to participate in the DanceSport Challenge Program I would tell them to go for it and give it a

try as there is always room for learning new things, just as there is always room for improvement, but it is also a

lot of fun.

Sasha L.

It is a unique experience and you will only get this opportunity in Year 5. I really encourage every student who is

in Year 5 to join the DanceSport Challenge Program. You won’t regret being a part of this program and getting

the opportunity to attend the Gala evening, whether you win a prize or not. This is the moment you dance for

yourself and your friends.

Larry S.
