ing than I did. There is so much blather about things organic. I’m not
sure what organic means so I looked it up: “Raised or con-ducted without the use of drugs, hormones, or syntheticchemicals.” OK. The turkey had to come from a blue state butcould never have lived in the Haight-Ashbury section of SanFrancisco, or have attended a rock concert. Organic alsomeans: “constituting an integral part of a whole; fundamen-tal.” Hmm. I wondered if Esalen sold turkeys. Off I went tomy Whole Politically Correct Foods Store.
“I need an organic turkey,” I said to the counterman, whowore a starched white apron, purple exam gloves and a hairnet approved by OSHA.
“All of our turkeys are organic,” he told me.“Oh, and it has to be free-range.”“Not only are our turkeys free-range, they were driven to
the range in a Prius.”He reached into the display case and came up with a bird
wearing a hazmat suit that was completely resistant to chem-ical permeation.
“He wasn’t cooped up or anything like that, was he?” Iasked.
“This bird came from a farm where it had its own free-range play area. It spent much of the day swaying in a ham-mock being rocked gently by former Solyndra employees, who read it stories by Al Gore and Noam Chomsky. It slepton a 100 percent pure Alpaca pillow with a bamboo cover, and its coop was heated and cooled with solar panels.”
“Do you know whether it lived according to ‘green’ prin-ciples? And do you know if it was an independent thinker? Iknow that turkeys are intelligent, social beings who nurtureand protect their young and thrive in their natural habitat.”
The meat dissector person was not surprised by my ques-tions. He looked, furtively, in both directions, then leanedhalf way across the counter.
“Mister, not only did this bird have its own non-toxicFisher-Price toys, but if turkeys had the right to vote, this one

REMEMBER THE good old days when you simply ranout and bought a frozen turkey, thawed it, removed thegiblets, washed it, stuffed it, cooked it, carved it, ate it, madesandwiches, made hash, and finally made soup? One birdprovided a month of comestibles.
None of that is true anymore. We are a greener, more con-cerned nation now. That concern extends to turkeys andwhether they live at least as well as we do. I have some closefriends who are environmentalists, so when I invited them forThanksgiving dinner, I knew the turkey I served had to be ...well, not only politically correct, but since we have aDemocrat in the White House, it would help if it came froma blue state.
I didn’t think there were any significant turkey farms in astate as blue as California. In fact I’m surprised people inblue states eat turkey at all, because turkeys look so muchlike former New York Senator Al D’Amato, and he was aRepublican.
Also, because of my friends’ strict adherence to environ-mental concerns, I knew the turkey could not have been con-fined to a small space while it was raised, and it had to beorganic and free-range. I needed to be reassured that the birdin question had been allowed to grow up out of doors and feelthe wind in its feathers and the sunshine on its back.
Organic turkeys probably wouldn’t have survived where Igrew up. We were five boys who slept in our own confinedsmall room. Four of us slept in two sets of bunk beds, whilethe oldest son got his own bed. My challenge now was to finda turkey that not only was organic, but had a better upbring-
would cast a ballot for a Green Party candidate.“Was there a spirit of sensitivity at the turkey farm?”“Even the roosters undergo sensitivity and anger manage-
ment training.”“I need to know one more thing. How did it die?”“Is all this gobbledygook really important?”“It’s important to my environmentally conscious friends
who are all against the death penalty. They need to know thatit had a humane ending. Turkeys have an amazing will to live,as do all sentient beings.”
He nodded that he understood. His compassion beliedsomeone used to wrapping his hands around sweetbreads.
“Lethal injection.”“Really!”“Yes, the turkeys are told they are going to Eagle School
and need to be sedated for the long trip to Top Gun atMiramar.”
“That is humane. But could he have escaped his fate?”“Only with a word from the President.”“See, gobbledygook is important.”Jerry Gervase can be reached at [email protected]
Buying an environmentally nurtured bird, or how green is your turkey?
Would it be politically correct to serve this turkey to your friends andfamily on Thanksgiving? You have to ask a lot of questions and doplenty of research to be sure.

8 RE The Carmel Pine Cone November 22, 2013
■ “I would like to express my appreciation for the consistently scrupulous and noteworthy editorialstandards I have been privileged to enjoy while reading The Pine Cone for the past several years.Succinct, ethical, and straightforward journalism at the local level is a thing to be celebrated in anage wherein a responsible and effective editorial hand seems to have been dismissed as anencumbrance in countless newspapers (online and otherwise) across the multimedia spectrum. One often gets the sense that editors no longer care about the quality of their copy, and arealmost cavalier about offering us articles rife with poor spelling, grammar, and outright unethi-cal reportage. It is indeed a sad and condescending state of affairs. Therefore, how refreshing itis to see the reliable excellence of The Pine Cone stand as a superior, small-town counterpointto such disturbing decline as evidenced by the blatant ineptitude of so many subpar contribu-tors in our national news outlets. Again, I would like to thank you and the entire Pine Cone staff for suchperennially diligent work and attention to detail. It is a pleasure to behold, a most valuable contributionto our community, and I am only too happy to actively seek-out and support your advertisers with mybusiness whenever possible. Keep up the fine work!”
■ “I want to thank you for providing our community with a real local newspaper. While I may notalways agree with all of the content, I do always enjoy reading The Pine Cone. Thanks again forkeeping our ‘news’ small town.”
■ “I have nothing to offer as far as advice except to tell you I can’t wait until Friday to read ThePine Cone, and I can’t wait to read your editorials! The Pine Cone is ‘must read.’ I especially enjoythe food/wine section, but virtually every thing you report is greatly valued by me, a life longCarmel/Carmel Valley resident! Great work! Please keep doing what you are doing.”
■ “As a former editor of many years, with a few as a publisher/editor, I always like to let a colleague knowhow much I enjoy their publication, if it is worthy of such enjoyment. Yours is.”
■ “I appreciate your paper and the online format you have that let’s me browse Carmel from Sonoma where I live. I alwaysenjoy reading The Pine Cone with my morning coffee when I’m in Carmel, and you’ve done such a great job with the onlineformat that I can smell the ocean from the Sonoma town square on Friday mornings when I open my email from The PineCone.”
■ “Just a note to tell you how much I enjoy The Pine Cone. Carmel is fortunate to have such a fine paper serving the com-munity. We spend a couple of months in Carmel each year. Of course, we always pick up a copy of the paper. But we readit cover to cover throughout the year. It is so wonderful to be able to keep up with the community we love so much. Pleasekeep up the good work.”
■ “You have the best paper on the Monterey Peninsula. I read the ‘real’ news in The Pine Cone and your Real EstateSection is No. 1. You have a true local paper.”
■ “I just wanted to say thank you for sending me The Pine Cone every week! I am returning to Carmel soon and can’t waitto actually have the actual paper in my hands. The Pine Cone has been such a welcome gift every week while I have beenaway these past few years.”
■ “I love your newspaper and await it eagerly weekly! It is the highlight of my week Thursdays at 9 p.m. when The PineCone ‘ding’ hits my iPad.”
■ “Thank you for your devotion to your community. You will never know how much The Pine Cone has meant to me. Oh,how I look forward to it every week.”
■ “I always look forward to Fridays when The Pine Cone comes out. The articles are so well written, you are not afraid ofcontroversy, and the calendar items give enough time to make plans. But my new favorite item is the Police Log cartoon. Ilaugh out loud pretty much every time I see it and go back for one last laugh before I recycle. Words can’t describe whatthe art can do — it’s remarkable.”
■ ”When I turn on the computer on Friday mornings or the weekend and see The Pine Cone, I smile.”
■ “I get The Pine Cone every week and enjoy it more than you can know. What a wonderful paper you have. I read everyword!”
■ “I just wanted to let you know how truly outstanding The Pine Cone is. The writing equals, if not exceeds, top-notchnational papers. You and your staff should be proud. I know I’ve told you before how great I think The Pine Cone is, but itreally is a terrific paper.”
■ “Thank you for providing balanced and researched reporting and upbeat articles. I hope we have The Pine Cone aroundfor many years to come. If it gets down to it, I would pay for the subscription to keep the paper viable.”
■ “We poll our ticket-buyers as to where they hear about our concerts. You might be surprised to learn how many of themmention The Pine Cone. Thanks!”
■ “Thanks for the consistently great job you do with your newspaper. I regularly read several newspapers from aroundthe country and yours has the best editorial integrity — bar none. Keep up the good work!”

Crabbe was lauded for hiswork in the fishing andocean conservation commu-nity, where he’s served onnumerous boards to helpboth fishermen and the envi-ronment. Although theWeekly does claim to have acephalopod on its writingstaff, we’re sure thatCrabbe’s past associationwith squid had no bearing onthe selection process, andwe’re really happy for hiswell deserved honor. Whoknows — maybe next year, aGolden Pine Cone?
Carmel Realty’s staff isback in the news. Managingbroker Malone Hodges fin-ished the Big Sur HalfMarathon last Sunday. Histime: A very impressive2:19. And, finally, a follow-up to Nick Glaser’s partici-pation in the annualSalvation Army Red KettleKickoff at Spanish Bay: Theluncheon raised more than$177,000 for the SalvationArmy, bringing the totalfunds raised in the event’s14-year history to over $1.6million.
That sounds like a lot, butproviding services fromtransitional housing to hotshowers, hot meals andemergency aid for people inneed — not to mentionbrightening their holidays —leaves plenty of room foryour cash in the kettle. So ifyou see Nick, or any otherSanta, out there ringing thebell, help him out!
Is something newsworthy, fascinating or just plainworth bragging about hap-pening at your real estateoffice? To see it in print here, please [email protected].

Pebble Beach estate, the firm raised about $18,000 forHabitat for Humanity. Porteous says that’s a 40 percentincrease over last year’s efforts. Not only that, but one of PaulHollingsworth’s local clients won $5,000 in a fundraising raf-

Then, two top agents — Tim Allen and Lucie Campos —were honored at a to-do at Spanish Bay as two of just 45agents in the top 1 percent of agents in Northern Californiathis year.
And on top of all that, Porteous added, the firm recentlydolled up its logo with a color change from gold to platinum.“Gold is so 1980s,” he joked.
Over at Sotheby’s, they’re celebrating David Crabbe’slatest laurel: Monterey County Weekly chose him as one of“25 for the Next 25,” calling him one of “the movers andshakers who will shape Monterey County for the next fewdecades.”
The tribute was part of the Weekly’s 25th Anniversaryissue, though we’re not really sure what it’s an anniversary of.
