Arenstein Family Excellence in Youth Service Award

This annual award recognizes the outstanding contribution of a

member of the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community

Center between the ages of 12 and 19. The selection process

honors a candidate’s contribution in furthering the spirit

and traditions of the Jewish faith, as well as the candidate’s

active expressions of the Jewish concepts of Tikkun Olam and

Tzedakah. The award is based primarily on contributions within

the Jewish community, but not without regard to contributions

to individuals, groups, and causes in the general community.

Leroy B. Goldberg Leadership Award

This award, instituted in 1985, is bestowed on an individual who

has shown over the period of at least three years a continuous

commitment to the function, purpose, and well-being of the

Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center, and

has demonstrated leadership ability in his or her role as a

volunteer.

Every other year the Jewish Community Center’s Associa-

tion of North America (JCCA) conducts a Biennial convention

for the JCC movement. Executive staff and lay leaders from

around the country gather to learn about best practices, trends,

opportunities and issues that affect the fi eld.

As part of the Biennial, the JCC Association gives awards to

JCCs who have achieved excellence in a number of different

program and administrative categories. For the third straight

time the Weinstein JCC has won more awards than any other

JCC in the country.

Many committees and lay leaders joined with staff partners to

create and implement the programs and services described

below providing further evidence that the lay leaders in this

community continue to demonstrate a meaningful commitment

that has immediate positive impact on the delivery of services

for our community.

The numbers are rather impressive; of the 175+ JCC’s in North

America:

67 received at least one award

43 received two to fi ve awards

12 received six to ten

Furthermore, the awards are given at the level of Exemplary

and the higher honor of Innovation, of the 67 JCC’s who won at

least one award:

and water conservation practices, expanding a recycling

program throughout the agency, and adopting a green friendly

purchasing policy

H il l e l VCU won Spiritual Student Organization of the Year

Award for the second year in a row

The J ew i s h Fa m ily Th e atre program had record levels of

attendance for their season including 6 sold out performances

for Fiddler on the Roof

Over 30 families have made commitments to be of the Cre ate a J ew i s h L e g a c y program to support the Center for the future

Grandparent and grandchild program, Gr an d H an d- in -H an d , offered to facilitate activities and interaction between

grandparents and their grandchildren

1st Annual Gr an dp a rents Rec o gn it i on D a y in both the

preschool and kids place programs brought grandparents

together with their grandchildren for activities

I tsy b itsy Yo g a program offered for children

M ake it H app en program offering 3 free assessment and

training sessions for new fi tness center members fully implemented

With 8 snow day/schools closed days, our K i d s ’ Pl a c e program offered full day care to enable families be able to go

to work and give children, who would otherwise be at home in

front of a TV all day, a fun, safe and supervised environment

Partnered with Sp ec i a l O ly mp i c s to train athletes for

swimming competition

hundred dollars for kids to go to “Build-A-Bear” and make teddy

bears that were donated to kids at Saint Josephs Villa

to be in an inclusive environment in public school, with typical

peers in enrichment classes and receive needed services

Integrate Dra ma Th er apy into all preschool classrooms

enabling the children to explore emotions and group dynamics

and develop interpersonal skills through play as well as

developing their imaginations and creativity and problem

solving skills

Preschool wide theme of Conn ec t in g to N atu re integrated

nature into multiple aspects of their programming, from

vegetable and fl ower and Butterfl y gardens to Mud Pits to the

year long study of the migration of Hummingbirds

Our fi lm and author events had record attendance supporting a

growing interest in Cultu r a l and Per fo rmin g A rts programs

New community read “One B ook One C ommun ity ” attracted organizations & synagogues in the Jewish community

as well as book clubs & book lovers in the general community

Benchmarking study again identifi ed the Weinstein as one
