Joseph Haydn

D'una Sposa MeschineZZa (Z778)

Aria (Donna Stella) for Paisiello's "The Girl from·Frascati" (Act l, Scene 4)

Have pity, I beseech you, on the inhuman, cruel lot of a wretched wife, of a deserted lover.

If you knew my predicament You would weep, in truth. I should like to say so much but cannot, here and now

You shall see, you shall hear What calamity will occur.

Antonio Vivaldi Vedro con mio diZetto (Z724)

Aria from "Il Giusti no••

I look at my beloved with such happiness and contentment.

And if he should ever part from me, I would sigh with suffering every moment, of every day.

Agitata da due venti (Z735)

Aria from "La Griselda"

Worried about the winds, the waves and the troubled seas, the helmsman is fearful wa~ting to be shipwrecked.

Alban Berq Sieben frUhe Lieder (Z907)

Seven Early Songs

1. Night

Over night and vale the clouds grow dark, mists hover, waters softly murmur. Now, of a sudden, an unveiling: oh, give heed, give heed! A vast wonderland opens. Silver soar mountains, dream-large, Still paths, silver-bright, go valleywards from the hidden castle;

Page 3: CAROLYN HARTJ Soprano MAUREEN VOLKJ Pianocollections.mun.ca/PDFs/munmusic/19860117.pdf · CAROLYN HARTJ Soprano MAUREEN VOLKJ Piano A cycle of 5 kid songs for soprano. School of Music

and so dream-pure is the lofty world. A mute beech tree stands by the way, Shadow-black; from the distant wood a breath blows solitary soft. And from the deep valley's gloom lights flash in the silent night. Drink soul, Drink solitude! 0, give heed! Give heed!

2. Reed Song

By a secret forest path I love to steal in evening light, to the desolate reedy shore and think, maiden of you. Then when the wood grows dark, the reeds rustle mysteriously, lamenting and whispering that I should weep, weep.

And I think I hear wafting Softly the sound of your voice, and drowning in the pond, your sweet singing.

3. The Nightingale

It is because the nightingale all night has sung; and from her sweet noise, in echo and re-echo roses have sprung. Such a wild thing she was once, now · she wanders deeply pensive, her summer hat in hand, and bears in silence the glow of the sun and knows not what to do. It is because the nightingale all night has sung; and from her sweet noise, in echo and re-echo roses have sprung.

4. Dream-crowned

That was the day of white chrysan thennnns,

its splendour made me feel almost afraid ...

And then you came to take my soul from me

at dead of night.

I was so afraid, yet you came sweetly, softly,

I had been thinking of you in my dreams,

you came, and soft as a fairy tune

the night sounded.

5. In the Room

Autumn sunshine. Fair evening looking silent in. Red fire blazing, crackling in the stove. Thus, with my head on your knees, thus I am content, my gaze reposed in yours, as the minutes gently pass.

6. Love Ode

Blissful in love's arms we fell asleep

the summer wind watched at the open window,

and bore out the peace of our every breath to the moon-bright night.

And from the garden, feeling its timid way, a scent of roses to our love bed came

and gave us wondrous dreams, ecstatic dreams, so rich in

longing.

7. Summer Days

Through the world now travel days sent forth from blue eternity, in the summer breeze, time drifts away, the Lord at night now twines with blessed hand, garlands of stars above wander and wonderland. 0 heart, what, in these days, can your clearest wanderer's song then say of your very deep delight; in the meadow's song the heart is dumb, words cease where image upon

image comes to you and fills you wholly.

Peter Tchaikovsky

Why ? Op. 34~ No. l4 (Z9l3)

Why has the luxuriant rose turned pale in the spring?

Why the blue violet lies numb under the verdant grass?

Why does the song of a bird on a wing sound so sad?

Why does the dew hang as a shroud over the meadows?

Why is the early morning sun cold and sullen as if in winter?

Why is the earth damp and dismal as a tomb?

Why am I increasingly sad? And pained from day LO day? Why, tell me, why since you left me you have

forgotten me?

At the Ball Op. 38_, No. 3 (l8? 8)

In the midst of the din of the ball, By chance, amid wordly noise and turmoil, I saw you. But mystery veiled your face. Only your eyes looked sad And your wondrous voice rang as a

delicate flute Or a playful wave. I admired your slender waist And all of your wistful expression. And your laughter, at once sad and resonant, Rings in my heart to this day. In my lonely hours at night, tired,

I like to lie down - then I envision the sad eyes

And hear the merry chatter. And quietly, blissfully I fall asleep And dream fanciful dreams •••. Do I love you - I know not, But it seems to me that I do.

Sergei . Rachmaninoff Day and Night Op. 34~ No. 4 (l9l3)

A passing breeze caressed me And sadly whispered: "Night is stronger than day." And the sunset dimmed, The clouds darkened. Startled, the gloomy fir trees shivered.

Over the dark ocean, Where the current turned A passing breeze touched the rolling swell. Night reigned ••.

Meanwhile, in the distance, Beyond the ocean, an eye caught fire, A fresh blossom unfurled in the sky. The east shone with new radiance. The breeze changed and wafted in my face And whispered with a smile: "Day is stronger than night."

The Floods of Spring Op. l4~ No. ll (l906)

The fields are still all white with snow But rushing waters ring with spring. They flow and waken sleepy shores, They flow and glitter and proclaim, They brightly shout from end to end: "The Spring is here! The Spring is here! We are the young Spring's messengers Sent in advance .•• The Spring is here! The Spring is here!"

And soft, warm Hay days' Rosy ring crowds joyfully Behind the Spring!
