She has extensive experience of conservation management plans, access and audience development and visitor management at regionally and nationally significant sites. Her Conservation Management Plan for the Castle Howard Estate received a prestigious RTPI Award for Heritage in 2009. Carolyn understands the need to deliver sustainable solutions that are sensitive to site conservation, economically viable and enable community engagement. Her skills encompass project visioning, the preparation of successful funding applications, visitor research and analysis, content research and collaborative development, stakeholder and community consultation. She has contributed to numerous successful Heritage Lottery Fund bids on behalf of clients, drawing together strategic thinking with an achievable approach to delivery and a clear understanding of benefits accruing from investment in interpretation within the wider tourism and community context. She is a longstanding member and was elected Chairman of the Association for Heritage Interpretation (AHI) from 1999 – 2002, was an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of York 2000 – 2003 and served on the Development Committee of ICOMOS UK. Carolyn is a Lecturer on the ICCROM course, Conservation of the Built Heritage, based in Rome, and is a Fellow of the Tourism Society. She was a Trustee of Beck Isle Museum, a community run museum of social history and rural life in the market town of Pickering that operates 7 days a week with a cohort of local volunteers. Current and recent project work Preparation of an interpretation plan and development vision for Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle working for L&R Consulting. The consultant team have produced an options appraisal and creative recommendations that radically address the challenges of collections storage and access, sustainable revenue generation and visitor engagement. The vision is enthusiastically supported by the Trustees, and visitor testing of ideas will take place over the coming months. (2012) Producing an interpretation strategy and activity plan to support a Heritage Lottery Fund Stage 2 bid for the Ffestiniog Railway, working alongside Querceus Design Ltd. The aim is to develop the leading heritage railway into a living linear museum with a greater emphasis on and engagement with the heritage significance of the railway and its superlative Snowdonia landscape. During August and September Carolyn helped the team to write a successful funding application to the Heritage Tourism Project administered by Cadw. (2011-12) Creating a new destination for the historic stone town of Stamford that interprets the streetscape and built heritage of the town through its archives, artefacts and oral histories. Working with Leach Colour Ltd (on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council), Carolyn produced an interpretation strategy, developed content and wrote copy for this innovative resource for local residents and tourist visitors that encourages exploration of the town. The attraction forms part of the town library and received over 7,500 visitors in its first few weeks of opening in 2012. (2011-12) Lead consultant providing a major interpretation strategy for Cadw with the aim of increasing access to the prehistory of Wales, developing a national approach to visitor engagement with the ancient and enigmatic past, from hillforts to stone circles. The strategy develops a series of geographic tourism clusters and interpretive media that links monuments, associated artefacts and outstanding landscapes, promoting lesser-known prehistoric sites to leisure and recreational visitors. Developing a comprehensive interpretation plan for Torre Abbey, a scheduled monument, listed building complex, regional art gallery and museum in Torquay for a Heritage Lottery Fund Stage 2 bid. A successful award from HLF of £3 million was made in January 2011, following the submission by RFA Design Ltd. This innovative scheme will create a major new destination as part of Torbay’s long term regeneration strategy for the coast. Continuing support for content development and copywriting is being provided during 2012. (2010-11) Working with Leach Colour Ltd, providing content research, planning and copywriting for new displays at a volunteer-run museum in St Agnes, part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. The museum is located in a Grade II listed building within the historic mining village and provides a comprehensive community and tourism resource for the ancient parish of St Agnes. (2010-11) Producing an interpretation strategy and content development for the Battle of Bannockburn on behalf of National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland. This work is part of national flagship project that involves the creation of a new visitor centre, battlefield interpretation and the development of a comprehensive educational programme, integrating with the Curriculum for Excellence. Activities include social history and battlefield research, academic panel liaison and storyline development to inform the design process and create a ‘must visit’ destination. (2010-11) Mentoring four Yorkshire museums on behalf of Arts Council England (ACE, formerly MLA) to support the development of interpretive planning skills and capacity building within the sector. This work involves working closely with individual teams on gaining a better understanding of audience needs in terms of leisure learning and concise message development, together with finding cost effective and practical solutions to refreshing and updating gallery displays and interpretive media. (2011-12) Working with Alison Farmer Associates to prepare a Conservation Management Plan for Bosworth Battlefield, Leicestershire. A programme of consultation and analysis helped to inform one of the first CMP’s for a battlefield site in England, capturing its outstanding national significance and providing recommendations for practical management priorities to ensure its protection and enable better public appreciation and enjoyment of this iconic piece of English landscape. (2011) Recently completed projects (2009-10) Lead Consultant for the development of an Interpretation Plan for Castell Nanhyfer, an early medieval castle in North Pembrokeshire in association with Nevern Community Council, Cadw and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The Plan supports heritage tourism activity, enhanced access and community engagement in an area popular with walkers and cultural visitors. Recommendations dovetail with the ongoing archaeological investigation of the site and provide a range of leisure experiences together with flexible learning resources that are community managed. Preparing a major interpretation strategy for Conwy, Gwynedd and Snowdonia National Park to help deliver economic impacts across North Wales, encouraging visitor exploration of sites associated with a range of themes including the early ‘Princes of Wales’, industrial heritage and pilgrimage sites and routes. This study resulted in a successful funding award for the partners in January 2011 - Associate Senior Consultant role with PLB Consulting Ltd Working with designers on the delivery of interpretive media to introduce the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site at a selection of key sites across the county – Associate Interpretive Planning and copywriting role with Leach Colour Ltd Developing detailed interpretation plans on behalf of Cadw for two abbeys in mid Wales – with David Patrick, Designer Facilitating senior stakeholder engagement on approaches to interpretation on behalf of Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site – for Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd
