BACKGROUND

The development and current functioning of the individual geomorphosystems in the Carpatho-Balkan region can be better understood in the context of the origin and functioning of the Carpatho-Balkan’s system as a whole. Countries in this region have got a lot in common in terms of historical linkages, which is also reflected in definition of research aims in geomorphology, similar methodological approaches and similar problems connected with realization of research. There exists therefore, a great potential for regional collaboration leaning on information exchange, mutual assistance or creation of joint supranational projects. Intensification of regional geomorphological collaboration can be profitable for all participants in Europe now under integrating process. The generation of founders of the modern geomorphological research which realized the significance of regional collaboration founded the Carpatho-Balkan Geomorphological Commission (CBGC) forty years ago.

The intention of the Carpatho-Balkan Conference on Geomorphology is meant not only as a reminder of this important anniversary. It should serve as a platform for revival of the CBGC’s activity. The conference brings a representative selection of themes studied by the individual national geomorphological schools, whether they concern morphogenesis and morphochronology, morphodynamics or applied geomorphology.

The Plenary Session of the CBGC, part of planned program of the event, will provide space for discussion of organizational structure of the CBGC and possible forms of particular collaboration (for instance, generation of regional theory of the development of georelief of the Carpatho-Balkan region on the basis of new geodynamic models, single geomorphological regionalisation, unified networking of stationary and semi-stationary research in terms of conception and information, creation and testing of methodology of geomorphological mapping, assessment of geomorpological hazards or construction of shared geomorphologically oriented GIS’s, co-operation in education, etc.). We trust that the meeting of the representative participation of geomorphologists from all parts of the Carpatho-Balkan region will reach the above-outlined aims. General Information and Guidelines

CONFERENCE VENUE AND HOW TO GET THERE Conference will be held at the pavilion of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava (“Prírodovedecká fakulta Univerzity Komenského v Bratislave”, see enclosed photos), part of the University campus situated in the western part of the city just above the Danube River (see enclosed maps No. 1, 2, 3). The campus is accessible from the city centre within 10 minutes by tram (No. 1, 4, 5, 9, 12) and by bus (No. 29, 32). The tram No. 1 and bus No. 32 depart from the main railway station (“Bratislava, Hlavná stanica”), the trip from the railway station lasts approx. 20 min. You can buy tickets (valid both for tram and bus) at the railway station either in a special kiosk or at the slot machines. The current prize of one ticket is 16 SKK (for trip lasting 10 – 30 min). Remember that the name of both tram and bus stop you have to get off at is “Botanická záhrada” (Botanic Garden). It is the 13th stop of tram, and the 10th stop of bus in direction from the main railway station. Participants coming by car approaching the University campus along motorways D1 or D2 follow the road sign reading “Mlynská dolina“ (see enclosed map No. 3), please, and finally also hardly noticeable tablet reading „FEI STU“ (the latter is situated close before turning off the motorway D2 obliquely upslope to the Conference venue). There is a parking lot just at the entrance to the pavilion, but not a guarded one. REGISTRATION The registration desk will be set up at the pavilion of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (see the information at the entrance). The registration desk is open on Monday (September 8) afternoon and Tuesday (September 9) morning (see programme). Participants coming earlier can be registered directlly at the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology; contact us from the pavilion doorkeeper’s room by phone, please. All participants are expected to pay for accommodation and in case of their interest also for meal tickets and the festive dinner at registration. Cash both in SKK and in EUR is admitted. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation during the Conference will be provided in student hostels situated in different places. It is the result of a relatively high number of registered participants. The current prices per one person per one night range from 250 SKK (ca 6 EUR) to 650 SKK (ca 16 EUR). Rooms are mostly single and double. Be prepared that parking possibilities at student hostels are limited. MEALS AND REFRESHMENT Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided in the dining room of the Student Hostel Družba, the participants will be offered the chance to buy meal tickets at registration. Full board per one person per one day should not exceed 280 SKK (ca 7 EUR). The price for the festive dinner is 500 SKK (approx. 12-13 EUR). Coffee and tea will be served free of charge during the breaks of oral sessions. LANGUAGE The Conference will be conducted in English. No translation will be provided. PAPER/POSTER PRESENTATION The time allocated for one paper presentation is 15 minutes, including possible short discussion, while the available discussion to individual papers will be common for the particular morning’s and afternoon’s blocks of papers. For paper presenters the overhead projector, slide projector and data projector (with installed MS Office 2000, including MS PowerPoint) are available in the Lecture Hall. The CD-R or 3.5´´ diskette drives are available. For posters presenters the poster panels with dimensions 94 cm (vertically) and 194 cm (horizontally) are available. As we need to use the poster area, two poster presenters will share one panel.

CONFERENCE AND POST- CONFERENCE PUBLICATIONS Book of Abstracts of Papers/Posters and Excursion Guide-Book, as the Conference publications, will be available at registration. Organizers signed agreements with four scientific journals, namely Studia Geomorphologica Carpatho-Balcanica (published in Kraków), Geografický časopis, Geomorphologia Slovaca, Acta Facultatis Rerum Naturalium Universitatis Comenianae – seria Geographica (all three published in Bratislava) to publish full texts of papers/posters after proper reviewing procedures after the Conference. The authors who are interested in publishing their contributions are expected to submit full manuscripts of their papers or posters at the registration. Distribution of individual contributions among mentioned journals will be based on their character. General guidelines for the authors are following: maximum extent of the article up to 20 pages including attachments (Arial or Times New Roman font, 12 points); manuscript in English with the full name of author(s), affiliation, full postal address (including e-mail), abstract in English (up to 100 words), key words (3 – 5), double spaced in A4 format; on separate sheets tables, illustrations, captions to illustrations. We need three hard copies of the text and one 3.5´´ diskette or CD-R in MS Word. Additional details (for example concerning references etc.) will be announced to authors after reviewing procedure directly from the chief editors of particular journals.
