Carpentry is well suited to those who enjoy working outdoors and working with their hands. It is an excellent field for people who like to apply their creative ingenuity in practical construction projects. Pride in good workmanship and safe, dependable work habits are important for success. Students must have the ability to solve mathematical problems quickly

and accurately, background in building trades courses, basic math, blueprint reading, basic residential drafting is helpful. This program has minimum entrance requirements. Residential carpenters specialize in new home, townhome and condominium construction and remodeling. They have versatile jobs and make up the second largest building trade occupation. Work typically involves following building plans and blueprints to construct and repair frameworks such as footings, walls, rafters, decks, and stairways, as well as installing kitchen cabinets, siding, drywall, flooring and tile. Students in BSC’s program learn these skills by building a single-family home in Bismarck. The BSC Carpentry program is accredited through the National Center for Construction Education and Research with endorsement from the North Dakota Associated General Contractors.

Population growth boosts new-home construction creating jobs for new workers. Home remodeling needs also spur demand for carpenters.
