Key Stage Updates Year 7 September saw us welcome the next cohort of Year 7 students and their parents. We look forward to a successful partnership over the coming years. On the first Friday after the October holiday the whole of Year 7 went to Caythorpe Court for a team building day. The weather was very kind to us and we had a great day. Many boys achieved personal victories as they conquered those challenges that featured height and others discovered a talent for leadership and problem solving. Each team was asked to nominate 3 team members in the three following categories - overcoming a challenge (C), encouragement of others (E) and showing leadership (L). Below are the boys who were nominated: Group Nominees Mrs Brooks George Curson (C) Harry Bennett (E) Ben Blyth (L) Mr Ratcliff Judah Elliott (E) Vince Harris (L) Chris Gadsby (CLE) Mr Wilson Callum Foard (C) Connor Harrison(E) Daniel Midgely(E) Aaron Hodgson(L) Mr Hanlon Charlie Knott (E) Sandy Ireland( C) Adam Hunt (L) Mrs Warhurst Matthew Whisker (C) Kieran Matthews (E) Jonathon Lister (L) Tom McIntyre (L) Mrs Smith Matthew Yates (L) Muzamil Abidi (C) Oliver Alderton (C) Haran Dunderdale (E) Mr Bartlett Alex Smith (E) Kai Packman (C) Oliver Patrick (L) Mr Broadhurst Keshwara Pritesh (E) Kyle Houldsworth (CEL) Craig Anderson (L) Mr Lord Ashley Roe (EL) Charles Price (C) Charlie Stubbs (EL) “Remember a Star with a Star”

During this term Year 7 have covered the issue of bereavement in their PSHE lessons. As part of our positive approach to this sensitive topic the Year 7s take part in our “Remember a Star with a Star” charity project. The Gifts Hospice usually donate their Christmas Tree to us after their service at St Denys’ and we aim to raise some money for them by offering the students and staff the chance to hang a star on the tree in memory of a loved one in return for a small donation.

Year 8 Operation Christmas Child Year 8 has been busy filling as many shoeboxes as possible for the benefit of less-advantaged children around the world. ROAD Charity Project

Last year when they were in Year 7 the students raised money for the cause of ROAD, a local charity that supports disadvantaged people in Romania. The final fund-raising activities concluded in the summer term and a total of nearly £700 was raised by the four forms. Jim Cork from ROAD came into assembly just before the October holiday to

receive a cheque for just under £700 on behalf of the charity. He shared with us that the project which we chose to support is due to be launched in the New Year. The chosen project involves teaching young men and women to drive. The ability to drive then opens up very real employment opportunities for the young people involved and gives them a future. It costs about £100 to provide the necessary training and instruction. Thanks to the boys in Year 7 last year, seven young people will face a very different future. Well done boys!

Key Stage Updates - continued Year 9 – Community Larder / Nomad Emergency Shelter At this time of year we also encourage Year 9 to consider helping others less fortunate than themselves. They focus on those who find themselves homeless or in straightened circumstances. They will be asked to coordinate the donations of food and other suitable items. The Sleaford Community Larder and Nomad Trust based in Lincoln are the main beneficiaries. Junior Prizegiving We held the first of our recently reinstated Junior Prizegiving Ceremonies on Thursday 18 October. We celebrated the achievements of our students in each of the subject areas last year. Up to five boys in each year were nominated in each subject area for their achievements with regard to progress and/or attainment. In future we envisage this ceremony taking place towards the end of the academic year, in the Summer term. Prizes were awarded to the following boys: English Y7 Ben Brunt Simon Johnson George Miller Ashley Kershaw Alec Ferguson Y8 Aaron Pilgrim Liam Robinson-Dales Ben Wilkinson Matthew Layton Frazer Cobb Raj Gowribalan Y9 James Lloyd Tom Watson Oliver Wheeler Jason Savage Alex Maidment Jack Williams Maths Y7 Daniel Jarvis Ben Brunt Simon Johnson Jack Doughty Callum Brewell Y8 Craig Miller Simon Paffett Phillip Smith Tom Borrill Darryl Wells Y9 Joe Dunderdale Jack Williams Mekinley Lloyd Luke Riddoch Henry Brazier Jonathan Swift Science Y7 George Thomas Jack Doughty Jack Livsey Ben Brunt Tom Barringer Sam Wright Y8 Matt Bee Max Bucknell Paul Haw Oliver Vince Aaron Pilgrim Y9 Tom Watson Kieran Hardern Sam Lammond Josh Harvey Ben Thomas History Y7 Tom Barringer Ashley Kershaw Ben Brunt Jack Doughty Steven Maddock Y8 Scott Farley Raj Gowribalan Callum Fisher Luke Cozens Joe Pateman Y9 Tom Watson Daniel Tarry Kieran Hardern Kyle Brown Conor Rankine RE Y7 Tom Barringer Ben Brunt Tom Fereday Matthew Darvill Charlie Rossington Y8 Edwin Carter Ben Wilkinson Luke Cozens Matthew Layton Matthew Bush Y9 Tom Cunningham Daniel Tarry Tom Watson Kieran Hardern Luke Riddoch Geography Y7 Jack Livsey Jack Doughty Tom Barringer Ben Brunt Ashley Kershaw Y8 Raj Gowribalan Ben Wilkinson Chris Doyle Matthew Layton Peter Carey Y9 Daniel Tarry Bradley Russell-Webster Tom Watson Richard Word Kieran Hardern Technology Y7 Ben Broome Tom Barringer Samuel Gilmore Matthew Darvill Timothy Darvill Y8 Chris Doyle Andrew Ferguson Tom Hodge Rorie O’Leary Elliott Price Jack Alexander Y9 Shaun Hudson Ted Polkey Will Dixon Tom Shorthouse Ben Light Ben Greenwood Kieran Hardern

In these days when many decry the behaviour of young people it is particularly pleasing to hear of such achievements in a nationally recognised organisation. Congratulations to Phillip Matthews! Securus…ICT Security System

Securus is our ICT security system and it is a very sophisticated tool. We have told the students this on numerous occasions but they still appear to have trouble believing us! They seem to think we are bluffing. Sadly, several have discovered recently that it is not bluff! Securus monitors Internet searches and will take screen shots of any inappropriate searches. It also monitors email traffic and language used on students’ home folders. Any inappropriate or offensive language is flagged up…even if it was eventually deleted from an email! Boys, we

are not bluffing, as some of your fellow students have discovered to their cost! Your use of our Intranet and the Internet is being monitored on a daily basis.

Key Stage Updates - continued Internet Plagiarism Whilst on the subject of misuse of the Internet, it is probably an opportune moment to remind students that they also need to be very careful when using the Internet to research and produce coursework (and also homework). Should they include anyone else’s material in their work it MUST be acknowledged and relevant reference details included. This is standard academic practice and failure to adhere to this practice puts students at risk of being disqualified from the qualification. Teachers who are familiar with their students’ work are generally very adept at spotting when a student has cut and pasted material into their work. Plagiarism is a serious offence with potentially very serious consequences for both the student and the school. Students who engage in deliberate plagiarism in coursework will face exclusion. Students also need to exercise caution when using websites like Wikipedia. The factual information may have been supplied by contributors whose levels of literacy leave something to be desired. Good research will always involve checking facts by referring to more than one source. Internet translators are also to be avoided. Some are very unreliable and inaccurate. Others produce a level of the language that would generally only be acquired at university! Uniform Reminders Some students could perhaps spend some of their holiday time practising the art of tying a tie! It would appear that several are struggling to tie their ties to the conventional length. Another rather baffling habit involves wearing one’s trousers so low that the back view is sadly reminiscent of a toddler’s nappy in need of a change! It is most unattractive boys. The boys also need to ensure that their trousers are held up with a smart, black belt. Please make sure that you do not find yourself exhausting our patience with constant reminders and spending an hour of your time after school in detention. We expect the inner smartness to be reflected in your appearance. Year 11 Mock Exams The beginning of December saw the Year 11 students sitting their mock GCSE exams and as the term draws to a close they will have had important feedback from their teachers. It is crucial that they analyse their performance and identify their strengths and weaknesses so that they can use the remainder of their time to prepare effectively for the real exams in the summer. We wish them a well-earned rest over Christmas but trust that they will remember to prepare for their language orals in January. The mock exam results will be posted out in the next few weeks. Carol Service We are looking forward to finishing the term on a festive note with our annual carol service on Thursday 20 December. It is always good to see the musical talents of our students showcased and enjoy their contributions to our service. We hope that all members of our school community will enjoy spending some time over this season with their families and that the New Year will bring a sense of expectation and hope for the future. We wish you all a restful and enjoyable break. Key Stage 4 Citizenship Sustainable Schools

Over the last term the Year 10 and 11 students have been considering the importance of making the school as sustainable as possible to try and encourage the students to ‘Act Local, Think Global!’ As part of this project all of the boys considered different elements of school life, from energy efficiency to transport to food sources. A range of team presentations were made to Mr Reading

and Mrs Andrew, with the most effective presentations being made by James Hoyes, Tom Monson, Adam Petch and Tom Pearce in Year 11 and Lloyd Henderson, Alex Walton in Year 10. Well done to these boys!

Key Stage Updates - continued

KS4 Citizenship Sustainable Schools (continued) Since then, the Year 11 students have made a very successful and well-received presentation to representa-tives of the Governing body, outlining their ideas and thoughts for the future. School is currently aiming to achieve the Silver Award for Eco Schools by the end of this year by implementing a range of ideas to make the school more sustainable. As the project unfolds, there will be further feedback through the Newsletter.

Our strongest Sixth Form mathematicians recently undertook this national challenge, organised by the University of Leeds. 90 minutes of mental gym-nastics ensued as they wrestled with some extremely challenging problems - such as the one below. Two students, Edward Cree and Callum McConchie, obtained extremely creditable Gold awards, Richard Rosa obtained a Silver and Chris Barnett and Adam Lee Bronze awards. Well done to everybody who competed. So, can you match our highly trained Sixth Formers? Try this Which of the following gives the exact number of seconds in the last six complete weeks of 2007? A 9! Year 10 Theatre Experience The Year 10 German group were treated to a theatre experience at St George’s College of Technology on Friday 23 November. The Onatti Theatre Company performed a very good play called Meine neue Schwester. Boys were very surprised at how well they understood the play and how entertaining it was. Similar French and Spanish experiences will be held later in the year.

PESSCL results for 2006/07 The Lincolnshire Central School Sport Partnership was delighted to receive some excellent news from their annual PE, school sport and club links survey (PESSCL). The Partnership has 91% of young people taking part in at least 2 hours of high quality PE and school sport each week. This score is 6% above this year’s national average and 5% above the national target for 2008. This is official recognition for all the hard work which teachers, coaches, supervisors, volunteers and School Sport Co-ordinators have committed to the programme over the last 3 years to improve the amount and quality and the PE and school sport each child receives. Activemark and Sportsmark Awards These annual awards are given to schools each year for their commitment to PE and school sport. This year they were awarded to all schools which have at least 90% of young people in their school receiving 2 hours of high quality PE and school sport in a typical week. In our partnership 92% of our primary schools met this target and were awarded Activemark, compared to 67% nationally. 38% of our secondary schools were awarded Sportsmark for reaching this target, compared to 10% nationally. Carre’s Grammar School were one of the secondary schools to receive this accreditation.

There are two of our current members of our staff in the photograph below - can you work out who they are? (Answer on back page)

Answer to Maths question on page 8 — B 10!

60x60x24x7x6 = (10x6) x (3x4x5) x (8x3) x 7 x 6 = 10 x 2 x 9 x 4 x 5 x 8 x 3 x 7 x 6 = 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 10! (easy!)

Answer to “Do you recognise anyone”? - Middle of back row - Mrs Smith. Middle of front row - Dr Moyes!

Some of you may have noticed that there are some big changes being made to the office. From January 2008 the office will become two separate offices - the far side will become Mrs Batten’s office and the other half will become the school office. Our smart new reception window, designed and constructed by Mr Mawditt, Mr Scholefield and Mr Watson, is now on the right hand side as you walk through the entrance doors to the school. The entrance to the office will be where the old reception hatch was previously. There have also been some changes to the staffing in the office. We now have a new Office Manager, Mrs Gerry Coppard, and Tracey Williams, formerly Administrative Assistant, has now taken on the role of Examinations Officer. Lesley Batten, who is the Head’s PA, and Tracey Williams are not now based in the school office. The office staff are: Gerry Coppard - Office Manager Mel Woolgar - School Secretary Karen Archer - Reprographics Assistant

News from the Office

We also have two new additions to the support staff, namely Mrs Michelle Wade, who has been appointed to the post of Learning Resources Manager, following Emma Whitton’s departure. Mrs Teresa Mallinson (who worked at Carre’s previously as a Learning Support Assistant), is our new Cover Supervisor. Welcome to all our new staff.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year
