Diploma of Accounting

I came to Australia with the idea

of improving my English. I started studying English at

Carrick Institute of Education and I am now studying

a Diploma of Accounting.

I love Australia, and Sydney is a beautiful city. You get

the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

Living in the city is very easy, the transportation is

excellent and you can walk everywhere in the city centre.

There are also many things to do in Sydney, such as the

Zoo, Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Aquarium and many

beautiful beaches where you can surf, swim and relax.

The first time I approached the recruitment service

they were very understanding about my need to find a

job. They were very kind and helpful and assisted me

in finding a job in a restaurant in Balmain called The

Balmain Bug. Prior to that they helped me improve my

resume, sent it along to the employer and arranged the

interview for me. As a waiter I help out preparing tables

before the guests arrive and then take orders and deliver

food to guests. The view from the restaurant where I

work overlooks the Harbour Bridge and it looks amazing.

If someone asked me what it was like studying and

living in Australia, I would say fantastic!

Advanced Diploma of Hospitality

My name is Ivory, and I have been

studying Patisserie at Carrick. I have gained many new

skills in the kitchen and Carrick has given me great support

to advance my studies and gain work experience. Nine

months ago I was looking for work in patisserie and Carrick

assisted me in finding work. I have been with The Bathers

Pavilion for almost a year now. When I started I was doing

voluntary work experience, but after hard work I am now

being paid as a Pastry Chef. I would definitely recommend

Carrick to anyone interested in coming to Australia

Student Success Story Alejandro Dante Saravia Leon

Peru

Advanced Diploma of Hospitality

(Commercial Cookery Stream)

My name is Alejandro Dante Saravia Leon and I have

a passion for cooking. I have a dream to become one

of the best chefs in Peru and hopefully internationally.

I came to Australia with an intention to expose and

introduce Peruvian Food to the Australian dining scene.

I wanted to develop my chef skills and thus enrolled

in Carrick Institute of Education because it had a very

good reputation in Australia.

Initially I didn’t know there was a service to assist

students with resumes/cover letters like Carrick Jobs

and Careers (CJC) but I soon found out and went to

Natalie Lee to get introduced to the Fine Dining scene in

Australia. Natalie assisted in developing my resume and

cover letter and then organised an interview for me at

Pier Restaurant with Head Chef: Grant King. Through my

hard work during my trial shift at Pier Restaurant, Grant

offered me a position in 2009. Unfortunately I was unable

to accept because I have been busy with organising my

“Taste of Peru” project.

During my studies at Carrick I have been working hard in

developing an authentic but modern “taste of Peru”

to showcase in April and introduce Peruvian Cuisine to

the Australian fine dining scene. To my credit, I believe

I am one of the first pioneers to introduce Peruvian food

to Australia.

Student Success Story

Brenda Hurst Ireland

Advance Diploma

of Hospitality Management

My name is Brenda Hurst, from

Dublin, Ireland. I am at present studying the Advanced

Diploma of Management at Carrick Institute of Education.

I have been with Carrick for the past year and a half and

in that time I have been very impressed with Carrick Jobs

and Careers. I believe it is an extremely valuable free

service available to Carrick students.

In particular, I am grateful to Natalie Lee for all her help.

She set up interviews and trials. She gave me valuable

advice on writing my resume and interview techniques

that helped to secure my current position. I am delighted

to say that I am presently working as a larder chef at the

renowned two hat restaurant - Icebergs at Bondi beach.

The experience is extremely valuable to me. It provides

excellent training as a chef. They also like to train their

chefs in different sections of the kitchen, so I will have

continuous development as a chef. They produce

excellent quality meals with impressive presentation.

I believe this experience will be a distinct advantage in

securing other such prestigious positions in the future,

and paves the way to eventually running a successful

business of my own.

Homestay Carrick Education is proud to associate with the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) for the provision of homestay services for its students.

AHN is Australia’s leading Homestay provider and was recently commended in the Senate Inquiry into the Welfare and Safety of International Students for meeting the appropriate standards in Homestay accommodation.

Homestay is a cultural exchange between a local individual or family (called a Host) and a visiting international student. The student lives as a guest in the home.

In traditional homestay, students can expect to be provided with their own room, food and space to study. The homestay hosts will assist students to become familiar with the local area and customs in a relaxed and friendly household setting. This is the recommended option for all new students studying in Australia for the first time.

Students are encouraged to share information about their home country and culture with their AHN homestay host. After the first 2-4 week minimum stay period there are numerous continuing AHN Homestay options to suit the various students needs. Please refer to the accompanying Homestay Chart for 2010.

AHN Homestay helps students to better settle into life in a new country and gain the confidence to build important social networks in Australia.
