PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By Fred Sypher

I was reading about beekeeping recently and there was a sentence in the article that struck me as one of those things I would not have thought about on my own. The sentence was “If you have honey bees and you are not controlling mites, then you are not a beekeeper, you are a Varroa farmer.” With a little looking I learned that there is a growing opinion that back yard beekeepers who do not treat for mites may be contributing to the increase in Varroa infestations by letting the mites multiply in their hives. All those who are guilty raise your right hands and repeat after me, “We will not allow Varroa mites to prosper in our hives.”

Our club now has a second honey extractor, another set of screen filters, a temperature controlled electric uncapping knife, and food grade lube for the extractors. This enables us to meet our members’ needs at harvest time. We also have a new, nuc-based observation hive that we have to finish and populate.

Four CCBA beekeepers have committed to study for the EAS Master Beekeeper exam. At our initial meeting it became obvious that there is an awful lot of arcane material we have to learn. Luckily, next year’s EAS conference is in nearby Delaware, so we can study for 15 months rather than 15 weeks. All four of us are a might short on short-term memory, so we may stretch it out and keep revisiting the materials until we get it, or as Fred Astaire sang “If you put this in your head then you will have it in a nut shell!”

President’s Message Continued from page 1

This is not a closed study group. If you just want to learn more about bees and beekeeping but are not interested in becoming a Master Beekeeper, you can join us Monday evenings, 7:30 to 9:30 at the Carroll Community College Library.

We had 57 enrollees and nearly 100 attendees for the 2016 Basic Beekeeping Short Course at the Community College. A special thanks to all the club members who helped out. The student evaluations reflect the excellence of the effort and knowledge

you brought to the class. Having Cybil Preston, the Chief Apiary Inspector for the State of Maryland, as one of the presenters was a highlight of the course.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the CCBA picnic on Saturday, May 14th at the Bear Branch Nature Center Pavilion. We’re having a picnic instead of a meeting. We will discuss the logistics at the April 20 meeting. See you at the meeting on the 20th!

Meeting to be held at Panara Bread in Westminster on March 22nd at 7:00 PM

Steve McDaniel was our speaker this month.

Steve talked about how to produce comb honey and different types of comb honey.

He also shared information about the Pollinator Protection Act and the effect readily available products have on our bees.

The meeting finished up with questions, answers and comments. Some of the comments made were:

Check for early swarm cells

Check for high hive beetle count

It was also suggested to remove pollen patties due to hive beetles laying eggs in the patties.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 by [Facilitator Name]. The next general meeting will be at 7:30 on Wednesday April 20, 2016, at Bear Branch Nature Center. The agenda is a round-table question/answer session.

APRIL TO-DO LIST 1. New Nucs and Newly-Installed Packages: Feed 1:1 Sugar Syrup (1 pound sugar dissolved in 1 pint of

water)

2. The dandelions are blooming signaling the start of the nectar flow. Get those honey supers on as soon as the current cold spell ends.

3. Check out George Imirie’s Pink Pages for March. George was an EAS Master Beekeeper who lived in Montgomery County. His Pink Sheets provide a wealth of information. His writing style is unique!!

4. Do a mite check. If treatment is necessary and honey supers are on, only a few products can be used. MAQS and Oxalic are OK. New packages should be checked using the Sticky Board Method.

5. Start regular inspections for swarm cells.

6. Keep on the alert for the presence of Small Hive Beetles.

7. Consider putting bottom boards in until this cold snap is over. When removed, check them for mites.

ANNUAL COLONY LOSS SURVEY UNDERWAY

Bee Informed Partnership (BIP) Take the Survey Today!

Dear Beekeeper

We need you! We know it is one of the busiest times of the year for beekeepers and we thank you for taking valuable time from your colonies to participate in the National Colony Loss and Management Survey created by the Bee Informed Partnership and sponsored by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

Please go to our online survey at http://10.selectsurvey.net/beeinformed/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=BIP2016 and complete the survey there. It will be live on April 1st and close on April 30th. Please do not complete the survey more than once. Information about past Winter Loss and National Management Surveys and the annual reports can be found online at http://beeinformed.org/.

The Colony Loss Survey has evolved from our winter loss survey conducted 10 years ago. Now we monitor summer losses as well. Last year, for the first time in the history of this survey, beekeepers reported higher losses in the summer than in the winter. The National Management Survey is conducted annually in conjunction with the Colony Loss Survey. The two surveys are aimed at looking for relationships between colony losses and colony management (including disease treatment

strategies, supplemental feeding, etc.) and/or other factors that may influence colony health (such as colony location, honey production, and forage type). Your participation in this research is voluntary and your responses will be kept confidential. In any publication or presentation resulting from this research, no personally identifiable information will be disclosed. We are also thrilled to release our Best Management Practices in the next few months. Please check back on our website soon for those exciting results!

Some of you may be contacted independently by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the USDA to participate in their first quarterly colony loss survey. We encourage all beekeepers contacted by NASS to answer both BIP and NASS surveys. But we need your responses!

If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at [email protected]. Once again thank you for your participation.

Dr. Dennis vanEngelsdorp President, Bee Informed Partnership, Inc. University of Maryland

DR. DENNIS VANENGELSDORP ADDRESSES SBA

Susquehanna Beekeepers Assoc. (SBA) March Meeting

Much discussion of bee loss trends: increasing summer losses vs winter losses in 2014, the difference in loss rates between backyard (BY) beekeepers and commercial beekeepers (BY beekeepers have higher winter losses). According to BIP surveys main causes of 2014 colony losses: #1 queen loss, #2 varroa, #3 starvation. Unsurprisingly, backyard and commercial beekeepers disagree on causes of colony loss. Data presented was drawn heavily from articles available on the Bee Informed Partnership site (2014-2015 and 2013-2014 data compilations). Key charts showing bee loss rates can be found below.

Causes of losses are complex. In a quote paraphrased from H. L. Mencken, “"For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.” We can find certain correlations, but they don’t indicate that there is a direct causation.

3 main problems in beekeeping persist: pesticides, varroa, and monoculture crops. In the 1980s 20 mites per 100 bees was the threshold for colony loss, now it is closer to 3 per 100. If your bees get to 5 mites per 100 or greater, the colony will likely suffer damage.

WHY DID MY HONEY BEES DIE? LEARNING TO IDENTIFY A COMMON CAUSE OF WINTER DEATH IN NORTHERN CLIMATES By Meghan Milbrath, Michigan State University Extension, March 8, 2016

Beekeepers in northern climates have already lost a lot of colonies this winter. While official counts won’t be recorded for a few months, some trends are starting to emerge. One of these trends is a specific type of colony death. In Michigan, I’ve received so many calls describing the scenario below, that I can describe the deadout before opening the hive, or before the beekeeper describes it over the phone. While I may impress some with these predictive powers, the frequency of these types of losses indicates a real epidemic that is affecting honey bee colonies in northern states.

Characteristics of the common early winter death in northern states:

1. The colony was big and looked healthy in the fall

2. A lot of honey is left in the top supers

3. The cluster is now small, maybe the size of a

softball

4. There are hardly any bees on the bottom board

5. Near or just below the cluster is a patch of spotty

brood – some fully capped, and some with bees

dying on emergence (heads facing out, tongues

sticking out).

6. If you look closely in the cells around the brood,

you will see white crystals stuck to the cell walls,

looking like someone sprinkled coarse salt in the

brood nest.

AND

7. You don’t have records showing that varroa was

under control.

(Editor’s Note: yet another article damming Varroa Mites. Hopefully we are getting the message!!)

PAINT DRY AND PAINT CURE… TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS

You finished painting your new hive bodies a couple of weeks ago. After the paint dried, you set them up in your apiary and eagerly awaited the arrival of two packages. At last they came and you went out to install them. Whoa – the hive parts seem to be propolised together and a hive tool was needed to pry everything apart. Doing so pulled off large pieces of paint from where the painted surfaces came in contact. How could this happen – the paint was dry!

Paint can feel DRY to the touch in as little as 1 or 2 hours, however CURE time usually takes 3-4 weeks. This is because PAINT DRY and PAINT CURE are two different things.

Paint “DRY” happens when the solvents evaporate from your paint coating leaving the paint feeling dry to the touch even though it is not 100% dry.

Paint “CURE” happens when your paint coating has reached its maximum hardness and is completely 100% dry.

When reading the label on your paint can, it will tell you the DRY time, not the CURE time, so how long does it take Water Based/Latex paint to dry and cure? Dry Time 1-2 hours – Cure Time 21-30 days

Some factors which impact dry/cure time.

The thickness of the paint

The number of coats applied

The surface it’s painted on

The sheen of the paint; eg., flat / eggshell / satin

/ semi-gloss / high-gloss

The brand and type of paint; eg, oil / latex /

chalk / acrylic / milk paint

The color of the paint and tints used; eg, longer

drying time with dark colors

The overall condition of where it is left to

dry; eg, air flow / humidity / temperature

To check if your paint is dry, touch an inconspicuous area with your finger. If the paint is not tacky and feels dry to the touch, it is dry.

To check if your paint is cured, do the fingernail test. In an inconspicuous area, press your fingernail into the paint. If it leaves an indent your paint is not fully cured. If no indent is visible and the surface is hard, your paint has cured.
