Conquering ALS, One Mountain at a Time!Football player Steve Gleason, who

played for The New Orleans Saints from2000-2008, will always be rememberedfor his blocked punt on the night theNew Orleans Superdome reopened forthe first time after Hurricane Katrina. In2011, Steve was diagnosed with Amy-otrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), alsoknown as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a termi-nal neuro-muscular disease.

After his diagnosis, Steve and hisfriends and family started Team Gleason,in hopes of generating public awarenessand raise funding for the research of thisterrible disease.

Recently, Team Gleason took on an-other endeavor – completing an epic ad-venture to Peru. Steve, along with KevinSwan, Michel Rivers and Scott Fujita, acrew from NFL Films and Team Gleasonmembers, endured a 7-day trek startingin Lima; taking countless buses, 2 trains,7 planes and hiking 10 miles through theIncan trail.

Their journey began in Cusco, wherethey spent 2 nights getting acclimated tothe high elevation and visiting the Cathe-dral, Qoricancha Temple, the Inca fortressof Sacsayhuaman overlooking Cusco,Qenko and Puka Pukara. They went on tovisit the village of Pisac, founded duringcolonial times, and continued their tripthrough the countryside town of

Urubamba to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. On Day 4, they woke up early to

catch the Vistadome train headed towardMachu Picchu, taking in stunning viewsof the mountains and heading into thehigh altitude cloud forest. The 21-mem-ber group, which included Steve andKevin in wheelchairs, and 18-month oldRivers, joined a group of porters beforecrossing a hanging bridge over theUrubamba River. At this time none ofthem had any idea what they were aboutto endure.

The Incan trail is a combination oflandscapes of high altitude mountainranges (the Andes) and dense subtropicalforest. It was extremely challenging tocarry the 2 wheelchairs up and down therocky narrow paths, but the fearless lead-ers, Scott, Blair and Marc, were not goingto let the lack of water and sunlight stopthem from getting to their final destina-tion. After 10 hours they finally reachedthe Sun Gate and got their first view ofMachu Picchu. Although the sun hadbeen down for a few hours and the ruinscould barely be seen through the moon-light, the group was excited to know itwas the final leg and hour or their jour-ney. Traversing downhill and along moresteps in the dimly lit site, the group finallymade it the Sanctuary Lodge for somemuch needed food, water and celebra-

tion. The following day they were elatedwith a huge sense of accomplishment tofinally see the magnificent landscape ofthe ruins and mountains.

Despite his diagnosis, Steve is deter-mined to motivate others by continuingto pursue life adventures, and has chal-lenged the worlds of technology and sci-ence to identify their most promisingdevelopments toward new treatmentsand a cure. Steve is such an inspirationand proves that with strong will and de-termination no mountain is too high toconquer!

One of their favorite views was over-looking the Urubamba, the Sacred

Valley of the Incas, situated betweenPisac and Ollantaytambo

With roots dating back to 1938,for over 75 years, direct lender JMCFunding has secured a strong founda-tion, helping thousands of familiesacross the country by providing cus-tomized mortgages at very competitiverates. As Senior Mortgage Banker andTeam Leader for JMC’s Florida divi-sion, local Carrollwood resident EricaParadise, MBA, is a true asset to thecommunity and the company, workingaround the clock to help homeownersthroughout the state to reach their refi-nancing, second home, and first timehomebuyer dreams.

Following in the footsteps of hermother, who owned a mortgage com-pany in New York, Erica realized herlove of the mortgage industry while ac-companying her mother on client visits. She says, “I love what I do. There isnothing more rewarding than the joyyou feel when you know you are help-ing someone and what really enticedme to become a mortgage banker was

the opportunity to help people to moveinto their new homes.”

Utilizing her vast knowledge inthe financial industry, including a Mas-ters in Finance from Fairleigh Dickin-son University, and her experienceworking as a Mortgage Banker, Erica, who is fluent in both Spanish and Eng-lish, serves her clients with the highestlevel of expertise. She takes a veryhands-on approach, guiding her clientsthroughout the entire process andhelping to customize a mortgage planthat’s right for them. Her comprehen-sion of the financial markets and how itcoincides with the mortgage industryprovides her with an in-depth under-standing in regards to what is best foreach client and their individual needs.

“Securing a mortgage can be avery stressful process and I make it aseasy as possible,” says Erica. “I take aholistic view of mortgage needs, andtake the time to explain to my clientsthe pros and cons of their different op-tions. My financial background reallyhelps when dealing with clients of all

goals and backgrounds.” One customer writes, “Our realtor

recommended Erica to us immediatelywhen we were ready to proceed with fi-nancing for our new home. From ourfirst interactions, to work on pre-ap-proval, all the way to our closing(which she actually attended in person),Erica demonstrated the highest level ofprofessionalism, experience and respon-siveness. No question went unansweredat any time. To the contrary, she an-swered every question quickly and hon-estly. When I hear people talk abouthow difficult their mortgage processwas it seems like an alternate reality tothe experience I had with Erica. Shewas thorough and amazing! We feel100% confident that we received thebest interest rate due to Erica's keensense of timing and understanding ofmarket conditions. I would, withoutquestion, recommend Erica to anyoneready to finance a home. She was ourchampion from start to finish!”

When dealing with any mortgage, time is of the essence, which is why it’sgood to know you have someone likeErica on your side; someone who willwork thoroughly and persistently toclose your deal in as little time as possi-ble. In addition to the in-house re-sources that are provided by JMCFunding, Erica also has her own list ofprofessional resources who assist her ineasing through the closing process, in-cluding a Board Certified Real EstateAttorney who currently works in thesame office as her. She says, “Anotherway in which JMC stands out is that wehave our own underwriters and proces-sors, so every thing is done in house. This is really important because everysituation is different, and if I have aquestion I can just walk down the hall

and get it answered immediately. Thisresults in a much quicker transaction.Homeowners and realtors really appre-ciate that because I can close any dealin 30 days.”

When you attain a mortgage withErica, you get all the benefits of a largecompany, such as a strong financialbacking and a huge support system, while still receiving the personalizationand attentive service that she strives toprovide to each and every customer.Erica says, “What ever the price range,I make every customer feel like they arethe only customer and I stay on top ofevery deal to make sure everything runssmoothly.”

If you are thinking about buying ahome, it is imperative that you get pre-approved now – even if you are lookingto purchase in six months from now.Not only will it help with the success ofyour loan in the future, but it is neces-sary for you to have pre-approval be-fore putting an offer in. And, with theway the market is going, deals are beingsnatched up daily and once you find the

house of your dreams you won’t wantanything to stand in your way.

Many people want to be healthy, but don’t know where to start. Conse-quently, too many people are walkingaround unnecessarily sick and/or inpain. And, even worse, some peopleeven believe that it is a “normal” partof life to have headaches, back pain, weight gain, depression, allergies, andmany other “common” ailments.

Thankfully, the team of experts atBain Complete Wellness is on a missionto educate and empower people to livehealthy, happy, pain-free lives.

They accomplish this through anintegrative, neurologically based ap-proach to healthcare that includesPhysician and Chiropractic Services,Nutrition Consultation, Physical Ther-apy, Athletic Training, andMassage/Bodywork.

Dr. Tim Bain, CEO and founderof Bain Complete Wellness, says his“Complete Wellness” model is neurol-ogy focused, because the neurologicalsystem is the master controlling systemof our bodies.

“One of the major problems withhealthcare today is that it is too focusedon looking at the symptoms, which ul-timately occur downstream of the ac-

tual source of the problem,” says Dr.Bain. “That’s why we look at the neu-rology first.”

Dedicated to helping as many peo-

ple as possible experience true healthand wellness, Dr. Bain is in the midst ofexpanding his practices throughoutFlorida, and has plans to ultimatelyopen clinics nationwide. There are cur-rently three Bain Complete Wellness lo-cations in central Florida –Carrollwood, New Tampa, andRiverview. Located just off Twin LakesBlvd. at 2901 Busch Lake Blvd., theCarrollwood office of Bain CompleteWellness is convenient to I-275, GunnHighway and Dale Mabry. A beautifulclinic in a quiet location tucked into theback of an office complex, it featuresmultiple treatment and consultationrooms as well as a full gym.

Dr. Brett Bowser has been theCarrollwood clinic director since thepractice opened in December 2012.Dr. Bowser and Bain Complete Well-ness took over the location after thetragic passing of beloved local chiro-practor Dr. Neal Sayers. Fisher, Athletic Trainer Rebecca“Becca” Guillen and Massage TherapistJulie Wright. Massage Therapist ErinCollin is also on staff.

Dr. Bowser was attracted to BainComplete Wellness due to Dr. Bain’sreputation for working with profes-sional athletes; Dr. Bain is the team chi-ropractor for the Tampa BayLightning, and co-founder and medicaldirector of the Athletes Compound atSaddlebrook Resort, where pro sportsstars train off-season. As much as Dr.Bowser loves sports, he was most im-pressed with the diversity of Dr. Bain’spractice and the profound impact heand his team of experts had on entirefamilies, especially babies.

Although Dr. Bowser still loves towork with athletes and is a go-to chiro-practor for USF athletic teams, he isproud to be the primary care physicianfor numerous Carrollwood families.

That being said, it is not unusualto see many of your favorite hockeystars from the Tampa Bay Lightning inthe office. In fact, In-Arena Host andFox Sports reporter, Brittany Zion re-cently recorded a video segment featur-ing a sports performance training andchiropractic treatment session at the of-fice with Lightning Forward Pierre-Cedric Labrie.

According to Dr. Bowser, “the ter-rible misconception of chiropractic careis that it is only indicated for the treat-ment of trauma due to automobilecrashes or other accidents causing per-sonal injury, particularly back or neckpain. Of course, it is an excellent sourceof rehab for these injuries and wegladly help people recover from acci-

dents, but it is important to recognizethat it offers so much more, since it is aprimary means of effectively treating aperson’s neurology.”

One of the most important thingsDr. Bowser feels he and his team helppeople deal with is stress. “Stress can bephysical, emotional or chemical,” hesays, “and the body doesn’t care whattype it is. Regardless, it creates negativechemistry within the nervous systemthat – if left untreated – can cause sig-nificant problems.”

He says that, too often, people areunder the impression that the body isjust supposed to just “deal with stress.”That’s why he believes it is importantto educate them to understand thatyour body is only able to heal itselfwhen given the proper nutrients, envi-ronment, and treatments.

According to Dr. Bowser, peoplewould be a lot healthier if they thoughtof their bodies as analogous to cars. Hesays, “we all understand that we needto give our cars the appropriate fueland perform regular maintenance likeoil changes and filter replacements.”

“It’s simply about making theright choices,” he adds. “We choosehigh octane gasoline for our expensivesports cars because we recognize thevalue, but we make terrible choices inour own diets – blind to the value ofour health.”

Dr. Bowser, Dr. Bain and all theexperts at Bain Complete Wellness be-lieve the key to living well is makingthe right choices for your health. Assuch, they are dedicated to providingthe inspiration, education, and supportto help people “choose right now,”which is the brand’s tagline. They ac-cept all insurances and work with pa-tients to ensure they receive the carethey need, regardless of financial cir-cumstances.

In closing, Dr. Bowser says, “Weoften start off caring more about ourpatients’ health and wellness than theydo. Our goal is to get them to care asmuch as we do, and when they do, weconsider that a true success!”

To start making the rightchoices for your health, visit Dr.Bowser and his team at the Carroll-wood office, located at 2901 BuschLake Blvd. in Tampa. Westfall Roofing -Built on Quality, Security & Tradition

By Kim Thomas

The roofs over our heads are vitalto meeting our basic needs, yet mostof us never think about the beating aroof takes year after year in Florida’sheat, wind and rain until a problemarises. Unfortunately, at that point, re-pairs are more costly. If your home’sroof is 10–15 years old, then it’s timeto find an experienced roofing con-tractor with an excellent reputation forquality work – before your roofsprings a leak!

Westfall Roofing is one of themost well respected roofing companiesin the Tampa Bay area, and has pro-vided roofing services to more than12,000 satisfied customers over its 24-year history. Serving both residentialand commercial clients, Westfall Roof-ing is a GAF Master Elite Roofer, aswell as a Certainteed Shingle Masterroofer and an Owens Corning Plat-inum Preferred Contractor, a certifica-tion awarded to a mere one percent ofroofing contractors in North America. And, Westfall Roofing has great re-views on Angie’s List to go along withits A+ rating with the Better BusinessBureau. The company meets all roof-ing needs, from new construction tocomplete removal and replacement ofold roofing. Westfall Roofing also in-stalls skylights, gutters, soffit and fas-cia, as well as attic insulation and isproficient in all types of roofs fromsimple three-tab asphalt shingles to di-mensional, metal, slate and tile, as wellas other roof systems such as modifiedbitumen, Gerard (a stone-coatedmetal roof), and more.

Westfall Roofing in Carrollwood

was founded by Kirk and Maria West-fall in 1989 and is still family-ownedand operated by the Westfall Family.Kirk, president, is a Florida licensedbuilding contractor and is very activein every aspect of running the com-pany. Maria is the office manager andthe Westfall’s son Ryan is vice presi-dent and sales manager, while his wifeAnissa is the company’s marketingmanager. The “Westfall Roofing fam-ily” also includes receptionist/pur-chaser Angelica Guevara and roofconsultant Michael Alvarez, a formerU.S. Marine who served in Iraq afterenlisting shortly after 9/11. Michaelhas five years of experience and enjoyshelping Westfall’s customers find thebest roofing solutions for their needs. This is a family that truly cares abouteach other, about their business andabout making sure they are givingtheir customers the best quality workat the best price possible.

Meeting with Marketing DirectorAnissa Westfall, I was impressed withWestfall Roofing’s commitment toputting its customers’ best interestsfirst. “A roof is an investment,” saidAnissa. “We want to educate our cus-tomers on the ways that they can actu-ally save money when they get a newroof.” Anissa’s blogs on Westfall Roof-ing’s website (westfallroofing.com) areinformative and relevant, covering avariety of topics such as, “How a NewRoof Can Save You Money” and“How a Roof Gets Replaced” to“Who’s Afraid of the Big-BrandRoof?” People often turn to big brandstores that offer roofing because theyfeel like the big name guarantees agood job at a good price, but that

isn’t necessarily the case when subcon-tractors are hired to do the work. Be-cause Kirk is a Florida licensed generalcontractor, Westfall Roofing offerswind mitigation inspections, whichcan give homeowners a significant sav-ings on their homeowner’s insurance.

With Westfall Roofing on the job,you will receive quality products, friendly and personable service andlasting satisfaction. There is a Westfallon every Westfall Roofing job. Cus-tomers can expect to see Kirk or hisbrother, production manager PaulWestfall, every day, inspecting everyjobsite and making sure that everycustomer gets the service that WestfallRoofing is known for. “This companyis important to us,” explains Anissa.“With 25 years behind us, we don’ttake this business lightly. We are pro-fessional, quality roofers and Kirk isgreat – he is very technically knowl-edgeable and cares about every job. Many times he is out there swinging ahammer himself.”

“I was very impressed with theowner Kirk,” says Westfall Roofing cus-tomer Michael Siegel. “He came out to

the job almost every day and his brotherwas here every day supervising. They arevery organized and always were a stepahead so that everything was very effi-cient.” Michael’s roof was 17 years oldand was in very poor repair. “My roof isbig, 2.7 times the size of the averageroof. There was a lot of work to bedone; they put the ‘sticky stuff’ downand they replaced six skylights, too.Westfall Roofing did everything aspromised; they were very clean and veryrespectful of my landscaping. Even mylawn guy was impressed because thereweren’t any nails left around.”

The “sticky stuff” Mr. Siegel re-ferred to is an upgraded underlayment, which is a peel-and-stick material thathelps with wind and provides a secondmoisture barrier and another layer ofprotection from hail. There have beenother upgrades in roofing materials.Anissa explains, “In the 90s you could-n’t find a shingle with a wind ratingover 65 mph and now shingles arerated for up to 130 mph winds.” Atticinsulation recommendations havechanged as well, and fortunately, West-fall Roofing provides insulation installa-

timely manner, Westfall Roofing advisesthat when possible, it is best to planahead to have your roof replaced in thefall or winter. “It’s simple supply anddemand,” says Anissa. “In the summer-time, the demand for roofing suppliesgoes up, especially if there is a storm, and that forces the cost of a new roof

up.” Plus, if there is a storm and youhave damage along with many others, supplies may even run out and suppliersmay then provide lesser products just tomeet the demand.

Westfall Roofing provides free es-timates, so if your roof is older thanten years, you’ve got nothing to losefrom getting an expert analysis of yourroof’s remaining life. You may evenbe able to plan ahead for the best pos-sible savings.

Westfall Roofing customer GraceTorres says, “I called two other com-panies out to give estimates, but whenWestfall Roofing came out, theytreated me like a family member in-stead of just another customer or anumber. I’ve already recommendedthem to a couple of people. I wasthrilled with their service both beforeand after the job. Kirk was there everyday to check on the workers and tomake sure that we were pleased withwhat was going on.”

Westfall Roofing is located inTampa at 5008 W Linebaugh Ave.,Suite 54. Hours are Mon. – Fri., 8a.m. – 5 p.m. For more informa-tion, or to request a free consulta-tion, you can visit online atwww.WestfallRoofing.com, [email protected] or call813-264-5690.
