Assessment of Control All PPE: Suitable protective footwear should be worn when using garden machinery. The precautions given in the links above should be followed when using the chain saw. When operating the ATV Quad bike note the comments in the above links, in particular head protection and foot wear. In summary for PPE: Given that the chainsaw is used on a non-regular basis then gaters and boots meeting EN345-1 will be suitable, a helmet with inbuilt visor & hearing protection should also be worn. A motor cycle type helmet should be worn when using the quad bike. First Aid: There are currently two people employed at this site and it is difficult to have a trained first aider on-site all the time. While it may be possible to have one of them trained as so, it would not be possible to have the other one. Given that then you would have the situation where the first aider becomes the person needing first aid it is just not a viable position. That being said they are appointed people and have a fully stocked first aid kit. There are very few employees there, with a good accident record & in easy reach of ambulance services. While this assessment was done for Whirlow house, grass cutting is now done at Troy House. The risks as as before, except there is access to first aiders at Troy House. IntroductionThis leaflet covers the safe working practices to be adopted when usinga sit-astride all-terrain vehicle (ATV), often known as an ATV quadbike. These are most commonly four-, but can be three- or even six-, wheeled vehicles designed for off-road use. See AFAG leaflet 702All-terrain vehicles for advice on other types of ATV.

This leaflet does not cover the additional safety requirements whenapplying pesticides or operating powered ancillary equipment fromATVs and is not a substitute for proper training.

You can use this leaflet, along with the manufacturer’s handbook, aspart of the risk assessment process to help identify the controls to putin place when using ATVs.

You must also assess the effect of the site and the weather as well asfollowing this guidance.

All operators must have had appropriate training in how to operate themachine and how to carry out the tasks required (see AFAG leaflet805 Training and certification).

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

oo 1 Use the following PPE:

ll Suitable head protection must be worn, eg a motorcycle helmet which meets BS 6658 or UN ECE regulation 22.05, or an ATV helmet/other head protection which meets BS EN 1384.

ll Eye protection (a visor or safety glasses to EN 166), against flying insects, dust or branches.

ll Protective boots with good grip and ankle support (complying with EN 345-1), when loading or unloading the ATV.

ll Gloves, for loading and unloading.

ll Non-snag outer clothing. The use of high-visibility clothing may also be appropriate.

oo 2 Carry a personal first-aid kit including a large wound dressing (seeHSE leaflet INDG214 First aid at work: Your questions answered).

Generaloo 3 Do not carry passengers on an ATV unless it has been

designed for, and is suitable for, that purpose. Never carrypassengers in a trailer behind an ATV.

oo 4 ATV capabilities and responses vary. If an ATV is changed theoperator may require additional training.

oo 5 The manufacturer’s recommendations for operation andmaintenance must be followed at all times.

Pre-start checksoo 6 Check the brake operation - footbrakes and handbrakes.

oo 7 Check the tyre condition, for wear and visible damage.

oo 8 Check the tyre pressures, using a pressure gauge capable ofreading low pressures accurately (1 psi difference can causecontrol problems).

oo 9 Check the steering, for smooth and positive operation.

oo 10 Check the throttle, for smooth operation in all steering positions.

oo 11 Check the security of the wheel nuts.

oo 12 Check the security of the seat, carriers and loads.

oo 13 Check all lights including warning lights.

oo 14 Check the clutch (if manual), for smooth and positiveoperation.

oo 15 Check you have enough fuel for the planned journey.

Emergency procedures

oo 16 Ensure that a designated and responsible person knows thedaily work programme and suitable emergency contactprocedures. Where possible use a mobile phone or radio and apre-arranged call-in system.

oo 17 Ensure the operators can provide the emergency serviceswith enough detail for them to be found if there is an accident, egthe grid reference, the distance from the main road, the type ofaccess (suitable for car/four-wheel drive/emergency servicevehicles). Know the location details before they are needed in anemergency. (Also see AFAG leaflet 802 Emergency planning.)

Starting and stopping

oo 18 Do not run the engine for long periods when parked inenclosed spaces.

oo 19 Sit astride the ATV when starting the engine. (On certainmodels with a pull start this may not be possible.)

oo 20 Ensure the gearbox is in neutral when starting.

oo 21 Always park the ATV in a suitable position with the parkingbrake applied.

Route planningoo 22 Plan your route to avoid severe slopes and unstable ground

conditions.

oo 23 Always survey deep vegetation to identify hidden obstructions.

oo 24 Plan regular routes to avoid rocks, stumps, drainage ditchesand steep slopes. Drainage ditches should be piped or bridgedon regular routes. Thatch soft spots where necessary. Luminousmarker posts may be used on permanent routes to help theoperator in poor weather or poor light. Remove the lowerbranches of trees on regular routes.

Drivingoo 25 Drive with due care and attention at all times and be aware of

other forest users.

oo 26 Only select and use routes that are within the capabilities ofthe ATV and the operator.

oo 27 Drive with feet on the footrests at all times.

oo 28 Do not ‘ride’ the gear change lever as this can put thegearbox into neutral.

oo 29 Use speeds appropriate to the terrain and tasks.

oo 30 Position the body to increase stability on slopes.

oo 31 Avoid changing gear on slopes. Select a suitable low gearbefore negotiating the slope or obstacle.

oo 32 Be aware that:

ll front wheel brakes are either omitted on some ATVs, or may have reduced efficiency when rolling back;

ll on four-wheel-drive machines, using any brake will operate both front and rear wheels;

ll some ATVs have hydrostatic drives with no engine braking at zero revs, therefore maintain slight revs on downhill travel.

oo 33 On ATVs without a differential, the driving technique used shouldallow for the difference between inside and outside wheel speeds during turns:

ll at slow speeds, shift body weight to the footrest on the outside of the turn while leaning the upper body into the turn;

ll at faster speeds, shift body weight to the inside footrest while leaning the upper body into the turn.

oo 34 On paved surfaces, increased grip may prevent wheel slip oninside wheels and reduce turning efficiency - a sudden change in traction may cause a change in direction.

oo 35 Sharp or quick application of the throttle in a low gear may causethe ATV to overturn backwards, especially when travelling up slopes.

oo 36 If travelling behind another ATV/vehicle, ensure adequate separation to permit safe braking and to avoid any dust, spray orstones that may be thrown up.

Driving on difficult terrainoo 37 Only drive within the limits of visibility.

oo 38 Maintain an even throttle while negotiating slopes.

oo 39 Avoid side slopes and difficult obstacles by route planning.

oo 40 Where side slopes are unavoidable lean and steer slightly uphill.

oo 41 To ascend slopes:

ll select the appropriate low gear at the foot of the slope;

ll keep your weight as far forward as possible (lean over the handlebars);

ll align the ATV directly uphill;

ll be competent in techniques to recover from a failed hill climb.

oo 42 To descend slopes:

ll select the appropriate low gear at the top of the slope and use engine braking (if available);

ll keep your weight as far back on the seat as possible;

ll align the machine directly downhill;

ll if needed, use only back brakes (be aware that on four-wheel-drive machines, operating the rear brake may also have a braking effect on the front wheels);

ll be aware of the danger of brakes locking causing a skid;

ll correct skids by releasing the brake and straightening the ATV;

ll very steep slopes need a run-out area at the bottom.

oo 43 It is not possible to set a maximum safe slope. The ability to negotiate a slope safely will vary with:

ll the competence of the operator;

ll the type of ATV being used (eg two- or four-wheel drive);

ll the load weight and distribution, including mounted or trailed equipment;

ll the tyre type, condition and pressure;

ll the ground conditions, including soil type, evenness and vegetation;

ll the weather conditions - dry, wet, frosty etc.

oo 44 In wet and boggy areas:

ll do not ford water deeper than 250 mm;

ll dismount from the upstream side of a stalled ATV;

ll test brakes after driving through water;

ll be competent in debogging techniques.

Carrying loadsoo 45 The operator needs to know:

ll the manufacturer’s recommended carrying limits;

ll the maximum front and rear load capacity;

ll the maximum ATV load;

ll how front and rear loads will affect stability.

oo 46 Loads must be properly secured and distributed to allow for difficult terrain.

oo 47 Heavy loads on the rear carrier must be counterbalancedusing ballast on the front carrier.

Trailed loadsoo 48 When selecting trailed equipment look for:

ll overrun brakes;

ll a swivel hitch drawbar;

ll bead lock rims on wheels;

ll a low centre of gravity and a wide wheel track;

ll a long drawbar;

ll attachment points for securing the load.

oo 49 The operator must know:

ll the maximum tow weight (trailer + load);

ll the maximum tongue weight (weight on hitch point);

ll the maximum combined tongue and rear carrier weight.

oo 50 Attach all loads only to the towing hitch and no other part ofthe ATV.

oo 51 Be aware that:

ll it is very difficult to unhitch a loaded trailer on a slope;

ll turning may be restricted when towing a trailer;

ll turning across slopes should be avoided.

oo 52 When pushing an ATV/trailer combination no person shouldstand between the ATV and the trailer.

Transporting ATVsoo 53 Before loading an ATV onto a transport trailer, check the trailer

load capacity, lights, brakes etc.

oo 54 After loading, ensure the ATV is securely restrained. Do notrely on the ATV brakes to prevent movement on the trailer.

Road use

oo 55 For use on roads, ATV quad bikes need to comply with theRoad Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 and theRoad Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989. They also need to besuitably insured and meet any vehicle excise duty requirements.

Introduction

This leaflet gives advice on using portable, hand-held, petrol-engine chainsaws atwork. It is aimed at employers, the self-employed and those who control the use ofwork equipment and includes basic information on safe working practices whichoperators should follow.

It will help you comply with your duties under health and safety law, but is notintended as a substitute for proper instruction and training (including training ofmanagers and supervisors to identify whether good practice is being followed).

When you assess the risks from working with chainsaws, it can be very valuable totalk to your employees about how they do their work. Use trade union or otheremployee safety representatives to help you.

Employers should remember they may be responsible for the health and safety ofsomeone who is self-employed for tax and National Insurance purposes but whoworks under their control and direction.

Fitness to operate a chainsaw

To use a chainsaw safely, the operator needs to be reasonably fit, both physicallyand mentally. People with disabilities need not necessarily be excluded from workwith chainsaws, however, medical advice may restrict the tasks they can do andrequire increased supervision. Although it is not a legal requirement, it isrecommended that employers undertake pre-employment screening whenselecting chainsaw operators. Seek further medical advice if prospective operatorshave any condition affecting:

■ mobility (eg arthritis, stroke);■ alertness (eg diabetes or alcohol/drug dependency);■ physical strength (eg heart conditions);■ vision (which cannot be corrected by glasses or contact lenses);■ manual dexterity/grip strength (eg vibration white finger);■ balance (eg vertigo or giddiness).

Operators should inform their employers when they are taking prescribedmedication. Check with the operator’s medical practitioner if the medication canaffect a person’s ability to operate a chainsaw safely.

Chainsaws and young people

Chainsaws should not be operated by anyone under minimum school leaving age(MSLA), which is on, or near the age of 16 years, depending on when the last dayof the school year falls. Employers of young people (ie above MSLA but under 18years old) will need to ensure:

■ they have the physical capacity to operate the chainsaw safely;■ particular account is taken of their inexperience, immaturity and lack of

awareness of relevant risks;■ they are supervised by a person competent in the use of a chainsaw for the

work being done by the trainee and who, where appropriate, holds the relevantcompetence certificate or award.

Health risks

Chainsaws expose operators to high levels of noise and hand-arm vibration whichcan lead to hearing loss and conditions such as vibration white finger. These riskscan be controlled by good management practice including:

■ purchasing policies for low-noise/low-vibration chainsaws (eg with anti-vibrationmounts and heated handles);

■ providing suitable hearing protection;■ proper maintenance schedules for chainsaws and protective equipment;■ giving information and training to operators on the health risks associated with

chainsaws and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) etc.

Encourage existing chainsaw operators to report any signs or symptoms whichmay affect their ability to use a chainsaw safely or may indicate adverse healtheffects from noise and/or vibration. Employers are required to carry out healthsurveillance of their employees where noise or hand-arm vibration exposure cannotbe reduced to safe levels. See ‘Further reading’ for more information.1,2,3,4,5

Training and competence

All chainsaw use

Chainsaws are potentially dangerous machines which can cause major injury ifused by untrained people. Anyone who uses a chainsaw at work should havereceived adequate training and be competent in using a chainsaw for that type ofwork. The training should include:

■ dangers arising from the chainsaw itself;■ dangers arising from the task for which the chainsaw is to be used; and■ the precautions to control these dangers, including relevant legal requirements.

Use of chainsaws in tree work

The Approved Code of Practice supporting regulation 9 of the Provision and Use ofWork Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98)6 sets a minimum standard forcompetence of people using chainsaws in tree work:

‘All workers who use a chainsaw should be competent to do so. Before using achainsaw to carry out work on or in a tree, a worker should have receivedappropriate training and obtained a relevant certificate of competence ornational competence award, unless they are undergoing such training and areadequately supervised. However, in the agricultural sector, this requirement onlyapplies to first-time users of a chainsaw.’

This means everyone working with chainsaws on or in trees should hold such acertificate or award unless:

■ it is being done as part of agricultural operations (eg hedging, clearing fallenbranches, pruning trees to maintain clearance for machines); and

■ the work is being done by the occupier or their employees; and■ they have used a chainsaw before 5 December 1998.

In any case, operators using chainsaws for any task in agriculture or anyother industry must be competent under PUWER 98.

Training provision

Training should be carried out by specialist instructors at organised trainingcourses. Advice on suitable training courses (and competence assessment whereappropriate) is available from your industry Sector Skills Council and sources listedunder ‘Further advice’.

Where training is being consolidated through workplace-based experience, thetrainee should be supervised by a person competent in the use of a chainsaw forthe work being done by the trainee and who holds the relevant competencecertificate or award.

It is recommended that all chainsaw operators have regular refresher/updatetraining to ensure they work to industry best practice and maintain their levels ofcompetence. The suggested intervals for such training are:

■ occasional users – every two to three years;■ full-time users – every five years.

Supervision of trainees at training courses and training at work

Instructors need to organise training to maintain a suitable ratio of trainees toinstructors. Factors to be considered include:

■ the level of experience of trainees;■ the content of the training;■ the location/terrain where the training is being carried out.

Where trainees are deemed to be safe and competent but need to consolidatetheir competence through workplace-based experience before undergoing externalassessment, a suitable record of training must be kept. During this consolidationperiod, the trainee still needs to be supervised (see Table 1).

Selecting a chainsaw

There are two basic designs of chainsaw – ‘rear-handled’ and ‘top-handled’.8,9

Rear-handled chainsaws

These have the rear handle projecting from the back of the saw. They are designed toalways be gripped with both hands, with the right hand on the rear handle. Selectchainsaws which will be suitable for the intended work. It may be necessary to have arange of saws with different guide bar lengths available. As a general rule, choose achainsaw with the shortest guide bar suitable for the work. Training in how to usechainsaws will identify the type and size of saw most suited to a range of operations.

Top-handled chainsaws

These saws have the rear handle over the top of the engine. They are onlysuitable for use off the ground by trained competent arborists. They are notdesigned for use on the ground or as a substitute for small, rear-handled chainsaws.

Maintaining a chainsaw

Proper maintenance is essential for safe use and protection against ill health fromexcessive noise and vibration. The saw must be maintained in its manufacturedcondition with all the safety devices in efficient working order and all guards inplace. It should be regularly serviced by someone who is competent to do the job.

Operators need to be trained in the correct chain-sharpening techniques and chainand guide bar maintenance to keep the saw in safe working condition. Operatorsshould report any damage or excessive wear from daily checks on the following:

■ on/off switch;■ chain brake;■ chain catcher;■ silencer;■ guide bar, drive sprocket and chain links;■ side plate, front and rear hand guards; ■ anti-vibration mounts;■ starting cord for correct tension.

Personal protective equipment

Suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) should always be worn, no matterhow small the job. European standards for chainsaw PPE are published as part ofEN 381 Protective clothing for users of hand-held chainsaws.

Protective clothing complying with this standard should provide a consistent levelof resistance to chainsaw cut-through. Other clothing worn with the PPE should beclose fitting and non-snagging.

NB No protective equipment can ensure 100% protection against cuttingby a hand-held chainsaw.

Safety helmet – to EN 397. (Arborists working from a rope and harness may usea suitably adapted rock-climbing helmet.)

Hearing protection – to EN 352-1.

Eye protection – mesh visors to EN 1731 or safety glasses to EN 166.

Upper body protection* – chainsaw jackets to BS EN 381-11.

Gloves – to EN 381-7. The use of appropriate gloves is recommended under mostcircumstances. The type of glove will depend on a risk assessment of the task andthe machine. Consider the need for protection from cuts from the chainsaw, thornymaterial and cold/wet conditions.

Leg protection – to EN 381-5. (All-round protection is recommended for arboristsworking in trees and occasional users such as those working in agriculture.)

Chainsaw boots – to BS EN ISO 20345:2004 and bearing a shield depicting achainsaw to show compliance with EN 381-3. (For occasional users working ineven ground where there is little risk of tripping or snagging on undergrowth orbrash, protective gaiters conforming to EN 381-9 worn in combination with steel-toe-capped safety boots.)

* Chainsaw jackets can provide additional protection where operators are at increased risk (eg trainees, unavoidable use of a chainsaw above chestheight). However, this needs to be weighed against increased heat stress generated by physical exertion (eg working from a rope and harness).

Lone working

Avoid working alone with a chainsaw. Where this is not possible, establishprocedures to raise the alarm if something goes wrong. These may include:

■ regular contact with others using either a radio or telephone;■ someone regularly visiting the worksite;■ carrying a whistle to raise the alarm;■ an automatic signalling device which sends a signal at a preset time unless

prevented from doing so;■ checks to ensure operators return to base or home at an agreed time.

First aid

Anyone working with chainsaws needs to understand how to control majorbleeding and to deal with crush injuries, so it is recommended that operators holdan emergency first-aid certificate. In remote sites, people who have been injuredmay also be at risk of hypothermia. Make sure operators always carry a personalfirst-aid kit (incorporating a large wound dressing) with them and have reasonableaccess to a more comprehensive kit.11

Working with chainsaws

Fuelling and lubrication

Make sure petrol containers are in good condition and clearly labelled, withsecurely fitting caps. Use containers which are specially designed for chainsawfuelling and lubrication. Fit an auto-filler spout to the outlet of a petrol container toreduce the risk of spillage from over-filling. Operators should:

■ avoid getting dirt in the fuel system (this may cause the chainsaw to beunreliable);

■ securely replace all filler caps immediately after fuelling/oiling;■ wipe up any spilt petrol/oil;■ during starting and use, keep fuel containers well away from fires and other

sources of ignition, including the saw itself (at least 4 m is recommended).

Do not allow operators to use discarded engine oil as a chain lubricant – it is a verypoor lubricant and may cause cancer if it is in regular contact with an operator’s skin.

Starting the chainsaw and pre-use checks

When preparing to use a chainsaw, operators should check:

■ all nuts, screws etc are tight;■ the saw chain is correctly tensioned;■ the throttle cannot be squeezed unless the throttle lock-out is pressed; and■ they are wearing the correct PPE.

When starting the saw, operators should maintain a safe working distance fromother people and ensure the saw chain is clear of obstructions.

When starting a chainsaw with a cold engine, operators should:

■ place the saw on level ground;■ secure the saw firmly, eg put a foot on the rear-handle base plate and a hand

on the front handle;■ set the controls as recommended by the manufacturer;■ pull the starter cord firmly.

Once the saw has started, operators should rev the throttle to warm up the engineand check:

■ the saw chain stops moving when the engine revs return to idle;■ the chain brake is effective when applied at maximum revs or according to the

manufacturer’s specification;■ the engine continues to run when the saw is turned through 90° in any direction;■ the stop switch works correctly;■ lubrication to the guide bar and chain is working properly.

These checks should be repeated at regular intervals throughout the day.

When starting a chainsaw with a hot engine, operators may use the same method asabove. Alternatively, they can grip the rear handle firmly between the knees and the fronthandle with their left hand, pulling the starter with their right hand.

Once the saw is running, operators should apply the chain brake before moving off withthe saw. Most modern chainsaws will allow hot starting with the chain brake applied.

Kickback

Kickback is the sudden uncontrolled upward and backward movement of the chainand guide bar towards the operator. This can happen when the saw chain at the noseof the guide bar hits an object. Kickback is responsible for a significant proportion ofchainsaw accidents, many of which are to the face and parts of the upper body whereit is difficult to provide protection. A properly maintained chain brake and use of low-kickback chains (safety chains) reduces the effect, but cannot entirely prevent it. Makesure operators use the saw in a way which avoids kickback by:

■ not allowing the nose of the guide bar to accidentally come into contact withany obstruction, eg branches, logs, stumps;

■ not over-reaching;■ keeping the saw below chest height;■ keeping the thumb of the left hand around the back of the front handle;■ using the appropriate chain speed for the material being cut.

Using the chainsaw

Whatever the job, check the worksite thoroughly to identify any potential hazards. Thisis particularly important when carrying out felling or demolition work. Wherever possiblemaintain a clear working area on the site. For any work with a chainsaw ensure:

■ the risks from the work have been assessed and controlled;■ the operator is competent to do the job;■ the operator wears the appropriate PPE;■ the operator either stops the engine or applies the chain brake when not

cutting with the saw.

Don’t forget to include the risks from manual handling in your assessment.12 Operatorscan suffer serious back injuries from handling timber incorrectly. Training in good manualhandling techniques and using handling aids/tools should reduce the risk of these injuries.

Tree felling using chainsaws

Before felling starts on the worksite:

■ contact the owners of any overhead power lines within a distance equal totwice the height of any tree to be felled to discuss whether the lines need to belowered or made dead;

■ do not start work until agreement has been reached on the precautions to betaken;

■ check whether there are underground services such as power cables or gaspipes which could be damaged when the tree strikes the ground;

■ if there are roads or public rights of way within a distance equal to twice theheight of the tree to be felled, ensure that road users and members of thepublic do not enter the danger zone. You may need to arrange warningnotices, diversions or traffic control.

When felling a tree:

■ check if it is affected by rot;■ assess what could affect the direction of fall, such as wind conditions and

whether the tree is leaning, has uneven growth or branches which could foulother trees;

■ be especially careful to check for broken crowns and branches which might fallduring the operation;

■ check both the tree to be felled and those nearby;■ operators may need to use aid tools such as alloy or plastic wedges, a

breaking bar, a cant hook, a winch, or high-lift wedges and a sledgehammer;■ make sure operators have the right equipment available and the skills to use it

correctly.

If a tree is likely to become hung-up on another during felling, operators will needto have the knowledge and the equipment to bring the hung-up tree down safely.Dealing with leaning trees or wind-blown trees also requires special skills.

Working with chainsaws off the ground

Chainsaws should not be used off the ground unless the operator has beenadequately trained in safe working techniques. Work off the ground involving thelifting and lowering of people or loads, including work-positioning techniques, willbe subject to the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting EquipmentRegulations 1998 (LOLER) (see ‘Further reading’).13,14

Mobile elevating work platforms

Always use a purpose-built platform. Ensure operators have received adequate trainingin the safe operation of the platform and safe use of a chainsaw from a work platform.

Work from ladders

Avoid using a chainsaw from a ladder. Chainsaws require both hands to beoperated safely: work on a ladder requires one hand to hold the ladder to maintaina steady working position. Work from a ladder should only be done by an arboristtrained in and equipped for tree climbing. When operating from a ladder, theclimber must establish an independent anchor to the tree using a rope and harnessand obtain a stable and secure work position.

Ropes and harnesses

Using a chainsaw from a rope and harness requires special skills. This should onlybe done by people who have obtained the relevant competence certificate forarboricultural work.

Preparing to sned❏ 1 Asafe method of operation must be agreed to ensure that a

safe working distance can be maintained between workers. Onsites where felling is taking place, this distance should be at leasttwo tree lengths. This distance should also be used in othersituations unless the risks arising from closer working have beenassessed and judged to be acceptably low.

❏ 2 Look out for dead wood, and insecure and broken branches inthe crowns of adjacent trees, which may have become dislodgedduring felling.

❏ 3 Check for any obstructions, eg standing trees, boulders,unusual branch formations or windblown trees in the path ofprogress along the tree (see also paragraph 14).

❏ 4 Ensure the tree is in a stable condition before any sneddings t a r t s .

Snedding❏ 5 Always sned with the tree on your right-hand side (see Figure 1).

❏ 6 On slopes, where there is a risk of the tree rolling, work fromthe upper side of the stem.

❏ 7 Always adopt a secure and balanced stance.

❏ 8 Do not use the chainsaw above shoulder height.

❏ 9 Use an organised sequence of snedding cuts and do not o v e r - r e a c h .

❏ 1 0 Keep the saw close to the body and support the weight of thesaw on the tree or right thigh.

❏ 11 Do not step forward when snedding the near side of the stem.

❏ 1 2 Keep the right foot well away from the intended path of thechain when cutting branches on the far side of the stem.

❏ 1 3 Be aware of branches and undergrowth under tension andwatch out for springback.

❏ 1 4 Do not cut branches with the kickback zone on the tip of thebar and do not allow the tip of the bar to catch uncut branches,supporting logs, butt ends or other obstructions. This can causek i c k b a c k .

❏ 1 5 Maintain a firm grip on both handles of the chainsaw until thechain stops.

❏ 1 2 Cut away all the smaller branch wood to shoulder height,retaining the main supporting branches and the stem (see Figure 1).

❏ 1 3 Before cutting the heavier branches, clear the work area ofdebris so that you can stand securely. Assess any potentialmovement of the tree.

In such circumstances, seek specialist advice and agreesafe methods of working.

All operators must have had appropriate training in how to operate themachine and how to carry out the tasks required (see HSE leafletINDG317 Chainsaws at work).

For guidance on personal protective equipment (PPE), the machine,preparing to work, maintenance, fuelling and starting procedures seeA FAG leaflet 301 Using petrol-driven chainsaws. The basic fellingprinciples identified in A FAG leaflet 302 Basic felling by chainsaw andmanual takedown must be read and applied in conjunction with thisleaflet. However, the crown spread, depth, branching habit, size andsurroundings of large trees create particular risks that needknowledge and techniques beyond that for basic felling, snedding andc r o s s - c u t t i n g .

Tools required❏ 1 The following aid tools should be available:

● a sledgehammer;

● w e d g e s ;

● an appropriately rated winch.

Felling❏ 2 Ensure that no other person is within a distance equal to twice

the height of the tree to be felled and never directly below onsteep slopes.

❏ 3 Be aware that wood from the crown can travel a considerabledistance when the tree hits the ground. Arisk zone must bee s t a b l i s h e d .

❏ 4 Where branch wood is used to cushion the impact of thefalling tree, only use light material which is as long as possible.

❏ 5 The felling cuts should be proportional to the tree’s diameter,size, species and the potential for decay.

Crown breakdown❏ 6 Crown breakdown can be very dangerous and the operator

must always be prepared for the tree rolling or for springbackwhen cutting branches.

❏ 7 Ensure that the tree is kept in a stable condition during crownbreakdown, if necessary by securing it with a properly anchored winch.

❏ 8 Plan the sequence of work so that an escape route is clearand available at all times.

❏ 9 Maintain a risk zone to ensure that bystanders are kept at asafe distance during the crown breakdown and until all parts ofthe tree are stable.

❏ 1 0 Never work underneath any part of the felled tree.

❏ 11 It is important to continually assess the tension in thebranches, especially those supporting the main stem.

Fuelling❏ 2 3 Petrol vapour is invisible and can travel considerable

distances from spillage or fuelling sites. Maintain a safe distancefrom all sources of ignition at all times.

❏ 2 4 Store fuel to avoid vapour ignition from any source such asfires, people smoking or the chainsaw. Select a site shaded fromdirect sunlight.

❏ 2 5 Use fuel containers specifically designed for chainsaw usethat incorporate a non-spill spout. The containers must be clearlylabelled and have caps which fit securely.

❏ 2 6 Replace all fuel and oil caps securely. Ensure the ‘O’ r i n gseals on the fuel and oil caps are in good condition.

❏ 2 7 Move a safe distance (normally at least 4 m) from the fuellingpoint before starting the chainsaw.

Starting the saw❏ 2 8 Chainsaws must be used with the right hand on the rear

handle. The thumb of the left hand must be under the front handle.

❏ 2 9 Maintain a safe distance from other people.

❏ 3 0 Be sure the saw chain is clear of obstructions.

❏ 3 1 From cold:

● Put the saw on the ground.

● Set the controls as recommended by the manufacturer.

● Place one foot on the rear handle plate and the left hand on the front handle.

● Pull the starter cord firmly.

❏ 3 2 From hot:

● As from cold but without using the choke or the half throttle stop controls; or

● Thigh or knee start:

- Grip the rear handle firmly between the knees.

- Grip the front handle with the left hand.

- Pull the starter cord firmly.

❏ 3 3 Where conditions prevent a cold start on the ground, a thighor knee start may be used.

❏ 3 4 Check that the chain brake works correctly. Apply the chainbrake when walking on site, or if the saw is not being used forshort intervals (more than 15 seconds). Apply the chain brakewith the back of the left wrist. Switch the saw off if it is not in usefor longer periods.

❏ 9 Ensure that a designated and responsible person knows thedaily work programme and agree with them a suitable emergencyprocedure. Where reasonably practicable use a two-way radio ormobile phone and a pre-arranged call-in system.

❏ 1 0 In case of emergency, be able to provide the emergencyservices with adequate information, eg a grid reference, thedistance from the main road, the type of access (suitable forcar/four-wheel drive/emergency service vehicles). In urban areas,street names are essential. Know the location details before theyare needed in an emergency. (Also see A FAG leaflet 802Emergency planning. )

❏ 11 On all reasonably foreseeable approaches to the worksite,erect warning and prohibition signs conforming to the Health andSafety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, indicating ahazardous worksite and that unauthorised access is prohibited. Inareas of very high public access, a risk assessment may indicatethat additional controls (eg barrier tape, barriers, extra manning)are required.

Maintenance❏ 1 2 Ensure maintenance is carried out as specified in the

m a n u f a c t u r e r’s handbook.

❏ 1 3 Check all external nuts, screws and fastenings are secure.

❏ 1 4 Check the chain tension by pulling the chain fully round theguide bar in the running direction. Wear gloves or use a cloth.

❏ 1 5 Check periodically throughout the day that:

● the on-off switch is eff e c t i v e ;

● the chain brake is eff e c t i v e ;

● the chain is stationary when the saw is idling without the chainbrake applied;

● the chain oiling system is eff e c t i v e .

❏ 1 6 Maintain equal cutter lengths, specified cutter angles anddepth gauge profiles.

❏ 1 7 Inspect the chain at each sharpening for abnormal wearpatterns and damage.

❏ 1 8 Check the guide bar rails for cracks and distortion.

❏ 1 9 Check the drive sprocket periodically for excessive wear ord a m a g e .

❏ 2 0 Do not make any adjustments, other than to the carburettor,when the engine is running.

❏ 2 1 Inspect anti-vibration rubbers frequently and replace asspecified in the manufacturer’s handbook.

❏ 2 2 Use only recommended non-flammable cleaner. Do not usepetrol to clean any part of the machine.

Introduction

This leaflet covers the safe working practices to be followed whenusing a petrol-driven chainsaw. For guidance on specific operationsinvolving chainsaws, see A FAG leaflets 302-310.

Top-handled saws are not covered in this leaflet. They are onlysuitable for use off the ground by trained operatives and must be usedin accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions (see A FAG leaflet308 Top-handled chainsaws) .

You can use this leaflet, along with the chainsaw manufacturer’shandbook, as part of the risk assessment process to help identify thecontrols to put in place when using chainsaws in forestry and othertree work.


All operators must have had appropriate training in how to operate themachine and how to carry out the tasks required (see HSE leafletINDG317 Chainsaws at work) .

Chainsaw users should be particularly aware of the potential hazardsof being cut by the saw, hit by timber and exposure to noise andv i b r a t i o n .

Personal protective equipment (PPE) ❏ 1 While no PPE can provide 100% protection against cuts

from chainsaws, the following should be used:

● Safety helmet (complying with EN 397).

● Eye protection (mesh visor complying with EN 1731 or safety glasses to EN 166).

● Hearing protection (complying with EN 352).

● G l o v e s* with protective guarding on the back of the left hand (complying with EN 381-7).

● Leg protection* incorporating chain-clogging material (complying with EN 381-5).

● Protective boots* with good grip and protective guarding at front vamp and instep (complying with EN 345-2).

● Non-snag outer clothing. The use of high-visibility clothing may also be appropriate.

❏ 2 Each person should carry a personal first-aid kit including alarge wound dressing (see HSE leaflet INDG214 First aid at work:Your questions answered).

❏ 3 Hand-cleaning material such as waterless skin cleanser orsoap, water and paper towels should be readily available.

The machine❏ 4 Only use a chainsaw if:

● the stop switch works and is clearly marked;

● the front hand guard/chain brake, chain catcher and anti-vibration mounts are undamaged and functional;

● the throttle opens only when the throttle lock is depressed;

● it is fitted with a chain type recommended by the manufacturerand is designed to reduce kickback, which is the uncontrolled upward and/or backward motion of the guide bar. It happens when the nose of the guide bar contacts an object such as a log or branch or when the wood pinches the saw chain in the cut (see Figure 1);

● the exhaust system and silencer are in good order;

● there is a mandatory hearing protection symbol on the chainsaw.

❏ 5 Make sure you have the equipment recommended by themanufacturer to carry out sharpening, maintenance andadjustments and a chain cover for transportation.

Preparing to work❏ 6 Operators should not normally work alone.

❏ 7 Ensure that a risk assessment has been carried out and thesignificant findings recorded. Make sure all workers involved inany operation on the worksite are made aware of and complywith the controls identified.

❏ 8 Agree a safe method of operation for the work to be done toensure that a safe working distance can be maintained betweenworkers, and between workers and machinery (outside the riskzone of the machines being used).

Introduction1 A third of all reported fall-from-height incidents involve ladders and stepladders – on average this accounts for 14 deaths and 1200 major injuries to workers each year. Many of these injuries are caused by inappropriate or incorrect use of the equipment. This guidance is to help employers:

know when to use a ladder; ■

decide how to go about selecting the right sort of ladder for the particular job; ■

understand how to use it; ■

know how to look after it; and ■

take sensible safety precautions. ■

2 HSE believes that misuse of ladders at work can be partly explained by the way they are used in the home. As with all work equipment, users need adequate information and training to be able to use ladders and stepladders safely. Adequate supervision is needed so that safe practices continue to be used.

3 This guidance does not apply to fixed ladders (on buildings, plant or vehicles), other types of fixed access (step irons etc), specialist rescue ladders used by the fire service, roof ladders, step stools, warehouse steps/mobile stairs, or temporary or permanent stairs.

When is a ladder the most suitable access equipment?4 This selection process has to take into account the hierarchy of controls:1

firstly to avoid work at height where possible; ■

then to prevent falls from height; and, failing that, ■

to reduce the consequences of a fall. ■

5 Where work at height is necessary you need to justify whether a ladder or stepladder is the most suitable access equipment compared to other access equipment options. You do this by using risk assessment and the hierarchy of controls.

6 When considering whether it could be appropriate to use a ladder or stepladder, you need to consider the following factors.

Is it a suitable activity?

7 This refers to the type of work and its duration. As a guide, only use a ladder or stepladder:

in one position for a maximum of 30 minutes; ■

for ‘light work’ - they are not suitable for strenuous or heavy work. If a task ■

involves a worker carrying more than 10 kg (a bucket of something) up the ladder or steps it will need to be justified by a detailed manual handling assessment;where a handhold is available on the ladder or stepladder; ■

where you can maintain three points of contact (hands and feet) at the working ■

position. On a ladder where you cannot maintain a handhold, other than for a brief period of time, other measures will be needed to prevent a fall or reduce the consequences of one. On stepladders where a handhold is not practicable a risk assessment will have to justify whether it is safe or not (see paragraph 10 for details).

8 On a ladder or stepladder do not:

overload it - the person and anything they are taking up should not exceed the ■

highest load stated on the ladder; overreach - keep your belt buckle (navel) inside the stiles and both feet on the ■

same rung throughout the task (see Figures 1a and 1b).

9 When working on stepladders you should avoid work that imposes a side loading, such as side-on drilling through solid materials (eg bricks or concrete), by having the steps facing the work activity (see Figures 2a and 2b). Where side-on loadings cannot be avoided you should prevent the steps from tipping over, for example by tying the steps to a suitable point. Otherwise a more suitable type of access equipment should be used.

10 You should also avoid holding items when climbing (for example by using tool belts):

on a ■ ladder where you must carry something you must have one free hand to grip the ladder;on a ■ stepladder where you cannot maintain a handhold (eg putting a box on a shelf), the use of a stepladder will have to be justified by taking into account:- the height of the task;- a safe handhold still being available on the stepladder;- whether it is light work (see paragraph 7);- whether it avoids side loading (see paragraph 9); - whether it avoids overreaching (see paragraph 8); - whether the user’s feet are fully supported; and- whether you can tie the stepladder (see paragraph 16).

Selecting/buying safe ladders and stability devices

11 When buying a new ladder, think about the worst type of surface conditions you come across (eg smooth, wet floor tiles). Manufacturers should be able to indicate the types of surfaces their products are intended to be used on when they are unsecured (untied). Only buy the ladder and associated stability devices that suppliers/manufacturers can confirm will be stable enough to be used unsecured in your worse-case scenario, otherwise you will need to take additional measures to secure it (see paragraphs 14-16).

12 HSE and BERR recommend Class 12,3 ‘Industrial’ or EN 1314 ladders or stepladders for use at work. Make sure the ladder is a suitable size for the work (see paragraphs 9 and 22).

Is it a safe place to use a ladder or stepladder? 13 This covers the specific place where you are going to set up and use it. As a guide, only use a ladder or stepladder:

on firm ground or spread the load (eg use a board); ■

on level ground - for ■ stepladders refer to the manufacturer’s instructions, for ladders the maximum safe ground slopes on a suitable surface (unless the manufacturer states otherwise) are as follows:- side slope 16o – but the rungs still need to be levelled (see Figure 3);- back slope 6o (see Figure 3);on clean, solid surfaces (paving slabs, floors etc). These need to be clean (no oil, ■

moss or leaf litter) and free of loose material (sand, packaging materials etc) so the feet can grip. Shiny floor surfaces can be slippery even without contamination;where it has been secured. ■

14 The options for securing a ladder are as follows:

tie the ladder to a suitable point, making sure both stiles are tied, see Figures 4, ■

5, 6 and 7;where this is not practical, use a safe, unsecured ladder or a ladder ■

supplemented with an effective ladder stability device (see paragraph 11); if this is not possible, then securely wedge the ladder, eg against a wall; ■

if none of the above can be achieved, foot the ladder. Footing is the last resort ■

and should be avoided, where reasonably practicable, by the use of other access equipment.

15 Ladders used for access to another level should be tied (see Figure 8). Stepladders should not be used for access to another level unless they have been designed for this.

16 Consider tying a stepladder where possible and advantageous to the task (eg side-on working or where two free hands are needed).

17 You should only use ladders or stepladders:

where they will not be struck by vehicles, by protecting them with suitable barriers ■

or cones; where they will not be pushed over by other hazards such as doors or windows, ■

by securing doors (not fire exits) and windows where possible. If this is impractical, have a person standing guard at a doorway, or inform workers not to open windows until they are told to do so;where pedestrians are prevented from walking under them or near them, by using ■

barriers, cones or, as a last resort, a person standing guard at the base;where ■ ladders can be put up at the correct angle of 75o. To judge the angle use the angle indicator marked on the stiles of some ladders or the 1 in 4 rule (1 unit out for every 4 units up, as shown in Figure 10);where the restraint devices on ■ stepladders can be fully opened. Any locking devices must also be engaged.

18 On a ladder or stepladder:

don’t work within 6 m horizontally of any overhead power lines, unless the line ■

owner has made them dead or protected with temporary insulation. If this is a regular activity, find out if the lines can be moved;always use a non-conductive ladder or steps for any necessary ■ 5 live electrical work;don’t rest ■ ladders against weak upper surfaces (eg glazing or plastic gutters). Alternatively, you can use effective spreader bars or effective stand-offs (see Figure 9).

Is the ladder or stepladder safe to be used?19 Establish the ladder or stepladder is in a safe condition before using it. As a guide, only use ladders or stepladders that:

have no visible defects. They should have a pre-use check each working day; ■

have a current detailed visual inspection. These should be done in accordance ■

with the manufacturer’s instructions. Ladders that are part of a scaffold system still have to be inspected every seven days;are suitable for work use. Use Class 1 ■ 2,3 or EN 1314 ladders or stepladders at work because domestic (Class 32,3) ones are not normally suitable for use at work;have been maintained and stored in accordance with the manufacturer’s ■

instructions.

What are pre-use checks and detailed visual inspections?

20 Both are looking for obvious visual defects, they only differ in detail. Both can be done in-house (pre-use checks should be part of a user’s training). Detailed visual inspections should be recorded. Ladder stability devices and other accessories should be pre-use checked and inspected in accordance with the

manufacturer’s instructions. Ladder and stepladder feet must be part of the pre-use check. Ladder feet are essential for preventing the base of the ladder slipping. Missing stepladder feet cause it to wobble. The feet should be:

in good repair (not loose, missing, splitting, excessively worn, secure etc); and ■

clean – the feet should be in contact with the ground. ■

21 Ladder feet should also be checked when moving from soft/dirty ground (eg dug soil, loose sand/stone, a dirty workshop) to a smooth, solid surface (eg paving slabs), to ensure the foot material and not the dirt (eg soil, embedded stones or swarf) is making contact with the ground.

Do my ladder-users know how to use them safely?22 These are common issues about setting up and using ladders under the direct control of the user. Users should also be aware of the limitations covered in the other headings. People should only use a ladder, stepladder or stability device if:

they are competent - users should be trained and instructed to use the ■

equipment safely;the ladder or stepladder is long enough - ■

for ladders: - don’t use the top three rungs (see Figure 9);- ladders used for access should project at least 1 m above the landing point

and be tied; alternatively a safe and secure handhold should be available (see Figure 8);

for stepladders: - don’t use the top two steps of a stepladder, unless a suitable handrail is

available on the stepladder (see Figure 11); - don’t use the top three steps of swing-back or double-sided stepladders,

where a step forms the very top of the stepladder (see Figure 12); the ladder or stepladder rungs or steps are level. This can be judged by the ■

naked eye. Ladders can be levelled using specially designed devices but not by using bits of brick or whatever else is at hand; the weather is suitable - do not use them in strong or gusting winds (follow the ■

manufacturer’s safe working practices);they are wearing robust, sensible footwear (eg safety shoes/boots or trainers). ■

Shoes should not have the soles hanging off, have long or dangling laces, or be thick with mud or other slippery contaminants; they know how to prevent members of the public and other workers from ■

using them; they are fit - certain medical conditions or medication, alcohol or drug abuse ■

could stop them from using ladders. If you are in any doubt, speak to an occupational health professional;they know how to tie a ladder or stepladder properly. ■

23 On a ladder or stepladder, don’t:

move them while standing on the rungs/steps; ■

support them by the rungs or steps at the base; ■

slide down the stiles; ■

stand them on moveable objects, such as pallets, bricks, lift trucks, tower ■

scaffolds, excavator buckets, vans, or mobile elevating work platforms; extend a ladder while standing on the rungs. ■

I. Training• Read the instructions carefully. Be fa mil iar with the

con trols and the proper use of the equipment.• Never allow children or people un fa mil iar with the

ins truc tions to use the lawnmower. Local regulations may restrict the age of the operator.

• Never mow while people, especially children, or pets are nearby.

• Keep in mind that the operator or user is responsible for accidents or hazards occurring to other people or their property.

II. Preparation• While mowing, always wear sub stan tial footwear and

long trousers. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open sandals.

• Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used and remove all objects which may be thrown by the machine.

• WARNING - Petrol is highly fl ammable.- Store fuel in containers specifi cally de signed for this

pur pose.- Refuel outdoors only and do not smoke while re fu -

el ing.- Add fuel before starting the engine. Never remove

the cap of the fuel tank or add petrol while the engine is running or when the en gine is hot.

- If petrol is spilled, do not attempt to start the engine but move the ma chine away from the area of spillage and avoid cre at ing any source of ig ni tion until petrol va pors have dis si pat ed.

- Replace all fuel tanks and container caps secure ly.

• Replace faulty silencers.• Before using, always visually inspect to see that the

blades, blade bolts and cutter assembly are not worn or dam aged. Replace worn or damaged blades and bolts in sets to pre serve balance.

• On multi-bladed machines, take care as rotating one blade can cause other blades to rotate.

III. Operation• Do not operate the engine in a confi ned space where

dan ger ous carbon mon ox ide fumes can collect.• Mow only in daylight or in good artifi cial light.• Avoid operating the equipment in wet grass, where

feasible.• Always be sure of your footing on slopes.• Walk, never run.• For wheeled rotary machines, mow across the face of

slopes, never up and down.• Exercise extreme caution when chang ing direction on

slopes.• Do not mow excessively steep slopes.• Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the

lawnmower towards you.

• Stop the blade if the lawnmower has to be tilted for trans por ta tion when cross ing surfaces other than grass, and when transporting the lawnmower to and from the area to be mowed.

• Never operate the lawnmower with defective guards, or without safety de vic es, for example defl ectors and/or grass catchers, in place.

• Do not change the engine governor settings or over-speed the engine. Op er at ing the engine at excessive speed may increase the hazard of personal injury.

• Disengage all blade and drive clutches before starting the engine.

• Start the engine or switch on the motor carefully ac-cording to instructions and with feet well away from the blade.

• Do not tilt the lawnmower when starting the engine or switch ing on the motor, except if the lawnmower has to be tilted for starting. In this case, do not tilt more than absolutely nec es sary and lift only the part which is away from the op er a tor.

• Do not start the engine when standing in front of the discharge chute.

• Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Keep clear of the dis charge opening at all times.

• Never pick up or carry lawnmower while the engine is running.

• Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire:- before cleaning blockages or un clog ging chute;- before checking, cleaning or work ing on the lawn-

mower;- after striking a foreign object. Inspect the lawnmower

for damage and make repairs before re start ing and op er at ing the lawnmower;

- if the lawnmower starts to vibrate abnormally (check im me di ate ly).

• Stop the engine:- whenever you leave the lawnmower;- before refuelling.

• Reduce the throttle setting during en gine shut down and, if the engine is provided with a shut-off valve, turn the fuel off at the conclusion of mowing.

• Go slow when using a trailing seat.

IV. Maintenance and Storage• Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure the

equip ment is in safe work ing condition.• Never store the equipment with petrol in the tank inside

a building where fumes may reach an open fl ame or spark.

• Allow the engine to cool before storing in any enclo-sure.

• To reduce the fi re hazard, keep the engine, silencer, battery compartment and petrol storage area free of grass, leaves, or excessive grease.

• Check the grass catcher frequently for wear or de te -ri o ra tion.

• Replace worn or damaged parts for safety.• If the fuel tank has to be drained, this should be done

outdoors.

• Auf keinen Fall Kindern oder Erwachsenen, die mit der Bedienungsanleitung des Mähers nicht vertraut sind, den Betrieb der Maschine gestatten.Das Mindestalter von Fahrern ist womöglich gesetzlich geregelt.

• Auf keinen Fall mähen, solange sich andere, besonders Kinder oder Haustiere, im Arbeitsbereich befi nden.

• Bitte denken Sie daran, daß der Fahrer oder Benutzer für jegliche Unfälle oder Gefahren, denen andere oder deren Eigentum ausgesetzt werden, verantwortlich ist.

II. Vorbereitung• Während dem Mähen immer festes Schuhwerk und lange

Hosen tragen. Die Maschine nicht barfuß oder mit offenen Sandalen in Betrieb nehmen.

• Das Arbeitsgelände sorgfältig untersuchen und alle Ge-genstände, die von der Maschine aufgeschleudert werden könnten, entfernen.

• WARNUNG - Benzin ist äußerst leicht entzündlich.- Kraftstoff in speziell dafür ausgelegten Behältern

lagern.- Nur im Freien tanken und währenddessen nicht

rauchen.- Kraftstoff nachfüllen, bevor der Motor angelassen

wird. Auf keinen Fall den Tankdeckel entfernen oder Benzin nachfüllen, solange der Motor läuft oder heiß ist.

- Falls Kraftstoff verschüttet wurde, nicht versuchen, den Motor anzulassen, sondern die Maschine vom verschütteten Ben zin wegschieben und das Verur-sachen jeglicher Zündquellen vermeiden, bis die Benzindämpfe sich verfl üchtigt haben.

- Alle Deckel wieder fest auf Kraftstofftanks und Kraftstoffbehältern anbringen.

• Schadhafte Schalldämpfer ersetzen.• Vor dem Gebrauch immer mit einer Sichtprüfung sicherstel-

len, daß Mähmesser, Messerschrauben und die Mäheinheit nicht abgenutzt oder beschädigt sind. Abgenutzte oder beschädigte Messer und Schrauben ersetzen, um Aus-wuchtung zu gewährleisten.

• Bei Maschinen mit mehreren Mähmessern ist Vorsicht ge-boten, da beim Drehen eines Mähmessers die anderen Mähmesser sich womöglich mit drehen.

III. Betrieb• Maschine nicht in einem geschlossenen Bereich betreiben,

in dem die gefährlichen Kohlenmoxydgase sich sammeln können.

• Nur bei Tageslicht oder guter künstlicher Beleuchtung mähen.

• Vermeiden Sie den Gebrauch des Geräts auf nassem Gras, soweit möglich.

• Achten Sie bei geneigten Böden stets auf Ihr Gleichge-wicht.

• Gehen Sie (nicht rennen).• Bewegen Sie sich mit fahrbaren Motor-Rasenmähern stets

quer zur Neigung der Fläche, gehen Sie nie auf und ab.• Gehen Sie beim Richtungswechsel auf geneigten Flächen

besonders vorsichtig vor.• Mähen Sie nicht auf besonders steilen Abhängen.• Genen Sie besonders vorsichtig vor, wenn Sie den Mäher

ziehen oder zu sich hin drehen.• Stoppen Sie die Klinge, wenn der Rasenmäher für den

Transport über Flächen ohne Gras angekippt werden muss, bzw. auf dem Hin-/Rückweg zur/von der zu mähenden Fläche.

• Benutzen Sie den Rasenmäher nie mit defekten Schutzab-deckungen, oder nicht in Position befi ndlichen Schutz-vorrichtungen, wie beispielsweise Leitblechen und/oder Grasfänger.

• Die Einstellung des Drehzahlreglers nicht ändern, und die Drehzahl des Motors nicht über die Werkspezifi kationen heraufsetzen. Der Betrieb des Motors bei zu hohen Drehzahlen kann die Gefahr von Körperverletzungen vergrößern.

• Vor dem Starten der Maschine alle Blockierungen der Klingen und des Antriebs lösen.

• Beim Starten der Maschine und Einschalten des Motors vorsichtig vorgehen. Halten Sie sich an die Gebrauchsan-leitung und achten Sie darauf, dass Ihre Füße weit genug von der Klinge entfernt sind.

• Kippen Sie den Rasenmäher nicht während des Starts oder Einschalten des Motors, es sei denn, dass dies für den Start erforderlich ist. Kippen Sie ihn n diesem Fall nicht mehr als unbedingt nötig und heben Sie nur den vom Bediener entfernteren Bereich an.

• Starten Sie die Maschine nicht, wenn Sie nahe an der Entladevorrichtung stehen.

• Bringen Sie Ihre Hände und Füße nicht in die Nähe der rotierenden Organe. Halten Sie die Entladeöffnung stets sauber.

• Den Rasenmäher bei laufendem Motor nie anheben oder tragen.

• Den Motor stoppen und das Kabel der Zündkerze tren-nen:- vor dem Entfernen von Verstopfungen aus dem

Mähwerk oder dem Auswurf;- vor dem Prüfen, Reinigen oder Reparieren des

Rasenmähers;- nachdem auf ein Fremdkörper gestoßen wurde.

Den Rasenmäher auf Schäden untersuchen und die Reparaturen durchführen, bevor die Maschine wieder angelassen und in Betrieb genommen wird;

- falls die Maschine anfangen sollte, ungewöhnlich zu vibrieren (sofort prüfen).

• Den Motor stoppen:- immer wenn Sie den Mäher zurücklassen;- vor dem Auftanken.

• Die Drosselklappe während des Auslaufens des Motors schließen und, falls der Motor mit einem Absperrventil ausgestattet ist, dieses bei Beendigung der Mäharbeiten schließen.

• Fahren Sie langsam, wenn Sie einen Sitz benutzen.

IV. Wartung und Lagerung• Darauf achten, daß alle Muttern, Bolzen und Schrauben fest

angezogen sind, um zu gewährleisten, daß die Maschine für den Betrieb sicher ist.

• Die Maschine auf keinen Fall mit Benzin im Tank in einem Gebäude lagern, in dem die Benzindämpfe ein offenes Feuer oder einen Funken erreichen könnten.

• Den Motor abkühlen lassen, bevor er in einem geschlos-senen Raum gelagert wird.

• Um die Feuergefahr herabzusetzen, den Mo tor, den Schall-dämpfer, den Batteriekasten und das Kraftstoffl ager von Gras, Laub und übermäßigem Schmierfett freihalten.

• Den Grasfänger häufi g auf Abnutzung oder Verschleiß prüfen.

• Abgenutzte oder beschädigte Teile zur Sicherheit immer sofort ersetzen.

• Falls der Kraftstofftank entleert werden muß, sollte dies im Freien getan werden.

II. Préparation• Pendant la tonte, ne portez que des chaussures solides

• Contrôlez systématiquement et soigneusement l’état de la surface à tondre et retirer tous les objets sus-ceptibles de devenir des projectiles lors du passage de la ma chine.

• ATTENTION – Le carburant est très in fl am ma ble. - Pour transporter ou stocker le carburant, utilisez

- Si du carburant a été renversé, ne pas tenter de démarrer la tondeuse, mais la pousser hors de la zone où le carburant a été renversé et éviter de créer une quelconque source de chaleur avant que les vapeurs de carburant ne se soient dissipées.

- Refermez avec précautions les bouchons des réser-voirs ou des récipients contenant du carburant pour garantir la sécurité.

III. Utilisation• Ne jamais démarrer un moteur à l’intérieur dans un

• Évitez de faire fonctionner l’équipement sur le gazon mouillé, si possible.

• Marchez, ne courrez jamais.• Pour les machines rotatives à roues, tondre à travers

les surfaces des pentes, jamais de haut en bas. • Soyez très prudents lorsque vous changez de direction

marche arrière ou tirez la tondeuse à gazon vers vous.

• Utilisez une butée d’arrêt afi n de maintenir la lame immobile si la tondeuse à gazon doit être inclinée pour le transport lorsqu’elle traverse des surfaces autres que le gazon, et lorsque vous transportez la tondeuse à gazon d’un endroit à l’autre.

• N’utilisez jamais la tondeuse à gazon avec des pro- tec tions défectueuses ou sans dispositif de sécurité, comme par exemple des défl ecteurs ou bacs à herbe, en place.

• Lorsque la tonte est terminée, réduisez les gaz avant de couper le moteur et, si le tondeuse à gazon est équipé d’un robinet d’arrêt du carburant, fermez celui-ci.

• Ralentissez lorsque vous utilisez un siège arrière.

IV. Entretien et Entreposage• Assurez-vous que tous les écrous, boulons et vis sont

bien serrés pour être certain que l’équipement est prêt à fonctionner de nouveau, dans de bonnes conditions.

• Parar la hoja en caso de que se tenga que inclinar el cortacésped para transportarlo por una superfi cie que no sea de hierba, o cuando se transporte de un área a otra por cortar.

• Nunca hacer funcionar el cortacésped con las proteccio-nes defectuosas, o sin los dispositivos de seguridad, por ejemplo defl ectores y/o las tomas de hierba en su sitio.

• Nunca cambie los ajustes del regulador o no haga que el motor tenga una velocidad excesiva.

• Desembragar todos los embragues de la hoja y de la transmisión antes de arrancar el motor.

• Arrancar el motor o encender el motor eléctrico con cuidado según las instrucciones y con los pies bien lejos de las hoja.

• No inclinar el cortacésped cuando se arranca el motor o se enciende el motor eléctrico, a menos de que el cortacésped no se tenga que inclinar para poderlo poner en marcha. En este caso, no inclinarlo más de lo absolutamente necesario y levantar solamente la parte más lejos del operador.

• No arrancar el motor cuando se está frente del pasillo de inyección.

segadora;- después de golpear un objeto extraño. Inspeccione

Nunca remueva la tapa del depósito de gasolina o agregue com bus ti ble con el motor fusionando o cuando el motor este caliente.

- Si derrama combustible, no intente arrancar el motor pero mueva la maquina lejos del área de derrame y no arranque el motor hasta que los vapores se hallan evaporado.

- Vuelva a poner todas las tapas de los tanques y de los envases con seguridad.

• Reemplace los silenciadores defectuosos.• Antes de usarlo, siempre inspeccione visualmente

• Verander de instelling van de motorregelaar niet en laat de motor niet met te hoge toeren draaien. Als de motor met te hoog toerental draait, kan het risico van lichamelijk letsel groter worden.

• Zet alle mes- en aandrijfkoppelingen in hun vrij voordat u de machine start.

• Start de machine of de motor voorzichtig en volgens de gebruiksaanwijzingen en houd uw voeten uit de buurt van het mes.

• Til de grasmaaier niet op terwijl u deze start of de motor ervan aanzet, tenzij de grasmaaier dient te worden opgetild om deze te kunnen starten. Til de ma chine in dit geval niet hoger op dan nodig en til alleen het gedeelte op dat het verst van de bediener is verwijderd.

• Zet de machine niet aan terwijl u voor de afvoer staat.

• Til de grasmaaier nooit op en draag deze nooit terwijl de motor draait.

• Zet de machine uit en maak de bougiedraad los:- voordat u opgehoopt materiaal weghaalt of een

verstopte afvoer leeg maakt;- voordat u de maaimachine controleert, schoonmaakt

of eraan werkt;- nadat u een ongewenst voorwerp heeft geraakt.

Inspecteer de maaimachine op schade en voer reparaties uit voordat u de machine weer start en gebruikt;

- als de machine abnormaal begint te trillen (onmid-dellijk controleren).

• Zet de machine uit:- als u de grasmaaier achterlaat;- voordat u brandstof bijvult.

• Minder gas tijdens het uitlopen van de motor, en als de motor met een afsluitklep is uitgerust, moet u de brandstoftoevoer aan het einde van het maaien afs-luiten.

• Rijd langzaam als u een meeloopstoeltje gebruikt.

IV. Onderhoud en Opslag• Houd alle moeren, bouten en schroeven goed vastge-

draaid zodat u er zeker van kunt zijn dat de machine in een veilige bedrijfsstaat verkeert.

• Sla de machine nooit in een gebouw op, waar dampen een open vlam of vonk kunnen bereiken, terwijl zich ben zine in de tank bevindt.

• Laat de motor afkoelen voordat u hem in een besloten ruimte opbergt.

II. Voorbereiding• Draag tijdens het maaien altijd stevige schoenen en

een lange broek. Gebruik de ma chine niet blootsvoets of terwijl u open sandalen draagt.

• Inspecteer de plek waar de machine zal worden ge-bruikt, grondig en verwijder alle voorwerpen die door de ma chine kunnen worden weggeslingerd.

- Als benzine is gemorst, probeer de motor dan niet te starten maar haal de machine van de plaats vandaan waar u benzine heeft gemorst en zorg dat u geen ontstekingsbron teweeg brengt totdat de benzinedampen zijn verdreven.

- Draai de dop van alle brandstoftanks en -blikken weer goed vast.

• Vervang defecte geluiddempers.• Inspecteer vóór het gebruik altijd of de messen, mes-

bouten en maai-inrichting niet versleten of beschadigd zijn. Vervang versleten of beschadigde messen en bouten in sets om het evenwicht in stand te houden.

• Op machines met meerdere messen dient u eraan te denken dat het draaien van één mes andere messen kan doen draaien.

III. Bediening• Laat de motor niet draaien in een besloten ruimte

waar gevaarlijke koolmonoxydedampen zich kunnen verzamelen.

• Maai alleen bij daglicht of goed kunstlicht.• Ook om nat gras te maaien, waar mogelijk.• Loop voorzichtig op hellingen.• Loop normaal, ren niet.• Maai met een grasmaaier met wielen altijd dwars op de

helling, nooit van boven naar onder of omgekeerd.• Wees bijzonder voorzichtig als u op een helling van

richting verandert.• Maai niet op erg steile hellingen.• Wees bijzonder voorzichtig als u de grasmaaier naar

uzelf toe duwt of draait.• Zet het mes uit als u de grasmaaier moet optillen om

deze over plaatsen zonder gras of van het ene naar het volgende gazon te vervoeren.

• Werk niet met de grasmaaier als de beschermkap-pen of veiligheidsmechanismen niet in orde of niet aangebracht zijn (bijv. beschermkappen of grasvang-mechanismen).

• Non operare mai con i tosaerba in caso vi siano per-sone, specialmente bambini, o animaletti domestici nella zona di lavoro.

• Tenere presente che in caso di incidenti, rischi o peri-coli provocati a persone o a beni, la responsabilità dell’operato ricade sull’operatore, od utilizzatore.

II. Preparazione• Indossare sempre scarpe robuste da lavoro e pantaloni

lunghi. Non usare i tosaerba a piedi nudi o indossando soltanto sandali.

• Controllare scrupolosamente l’area in cui verrà utiliz-zato l’equipaggiamento e togliere tutti gli oggetti che potrebbero venire scagliati dal macchinario.

• ATTENZIONE - La benzina è infi ammabilissima.- Conservare il carburante in contenitori appositi.- Fare rifornimento soltanto all’aperto. E’ vietato fumare

durante il rifornimento.- Fare rifornimento prima di avviare il motore. Non

svitare mai il tappo del serbatoio, né fare rifornimento con il motore acceso o caldo.

- In caso di fuoriuscita di benzina, non mettere in moto il motore. Spostare l’equipaggiamento dall’aerea in cui si è verifi cata la fuoriuscita del carburante ed evitare di provocare qualsiasi tipo di accensione fi no a quando i vapori non si siano dissipati.

- Reinserire e serrare bene il tappo del serbatoio e del contenitore.

• Sostituire le marmitte che non funzionino bene.• Prima di iniziare il lavoro ispezionare visivamente

le lame, i bulloni delle lame e il gruppo falciante per verifi care che non vi siano tracce di usura o danneg-giamenti. In caso di lame e bulloni danneggiati od usurati, installate un nuovo set completo in modo che il macchinario rimanga bilanciato.

• In caso di trattorini tosaerba a lame mul ti ple prestare la massima attenzione in quanto ruotando una lama si può provocare la rotazione delle altre.

III. Funzionamento• Non accendere il motore in spazi ristretti dove vi si possa

accumulare ossido di carbonio, un gas inodore ma letale.• Usare i tosaerba soltanto con la luce del giorno oppure

in presenza di buona luce artifi ciale.• Se possibile, evitare di utilizzare l’apparecchio sull’erba

bagnata. • Stare sempre bene in equilibrio nei tratti scoscesi. • Camminare sempre, non correre mai.• Per macchine a ruote, nei tratti scoscesi, falciare

l’erba seguendo la costa del pendio, non salendo e scendendo.

• Prestare estrema attenzione al cambio di direzione su un tratto scosceso.

• Non falciare tratti eccessivamente ripidi. • Prestare estrema attenzione girando o tirando la mac-

china verso di sé. • Fermare le lame nel caso in cui la macchina debba

essere trasportata su superfi ci non erbose, oppure verso la zona da falciare.

• Non utilizzare mai la macchina con protezioni difet-tose, oppure in assenza di dispositivi di sicurezza, ad esempio, defl ettori e/o separatori di erba.

• Non modifi care le impostazioni del regolatore del motore né far operare il motore a velocità eccessive. Le velocità eccessive possono aumentare il pericolo di infortuni.

• Disinnestare tutte le lame e le frizioni prima di avviare il motore.

• Avviare o accendere il motore ponendo molta attenzi-one, attenendosi alle istruzioni e con i piedi ben lontani della lame.

• Non inclinare mai la macchina avviando o accen-dendo il motore, con la sola eccezione dei casi in cui questo sia assolutamente necessario. In questo caso, comunque non inclinarla mai oltre quanto sia stret-tamente necessario e sollevare solamente la parte distante dall’operatore.

• Non avviare il motore stando davanti al tubo di scarico.

• Non avvicinare mani o piedi alle parti rotanti. Mantenersi a distanza dal tubo di scarico, sempre aperto.

• Non rimorchiare o trasportare mai la macchina con il motore in funzione.

• Arrestare il motore e staccare il cavo della candela: - prima di pulire eventuali intasamenti e pri ma di

stasare lo scivolo;- prima di interventi o controlli sul tosaerba e prima

delle operazioni di pulizia;- dopo aver colpito un oggetto estraneo. Controllare

che il tosaerba non sia stato danneggiato ed ef-fettuare le riparazioni del caso prima di riavviare e mettere in funzione l’equipaggiamento;

- se il tosaerba, o trattorino, vibra in modo anomalo (in qual caso eseguire immediatamente dei controlli).

• Arrestare il motore:- ovunque sia stata lasciata la macchina;- prima di fare carburante.

• Ridurre la velocità, con la leva dell’acceleratore, per rallentare il motore prima dello spegnimento. Se il motore è provvisto di valvola di arresto, chiudere l’alimentazione del carburante alla fi ne del lavoro.

• Guidare lentamente qualora si utilizzi il sedile poste-riore.

IV. Manutenzione e Periodi di Inattivita’• Verifi care che tutti i dadi, i bulloni e le viti siano sempre

ben stretti per assicurare che l’equipaggiamento sia in buone condizioni operative.

• Non lasciare mai l’equipaggiamento, con benzina nel serbatoio, in locali chiusi dove i vapori possano rag-giungere fi amme libere o scintille.

• Lasciare raffreddare il motore prima di riporre i tosaerba, o trattorini, in qualsiasi spazio stretto e chiuso.

• Per ridurre i pericoli d’incendio assicurarsi che il motore, la marmitta, il vano batteria e la zona di stoccaggio benzina siano liberi da erba, foglie o quantità eccessive di grasso.

• Controllare spesso il raccoglitore dell’erba tagliata per individuare eventuali segni di usura o di danneg-giamento.

• Per maggiore sicurezza, sostituire le parti usurate o danneggiate.

• Il serbatoio del carburante va vuotato all’aperto, qualora necessario.

AdjustmentThe mower can be set to different cutting levels. Adjust to desired cutting level by means of the lever at each wheel. Move the lever towards the wheel and set the cutting level. All wheels must be in the same height positions, otherwise uneven cutting will result.

Starting and StoppingPlace the mower on a fl at surface. Note: not on gravel or similar. Fill the tank with petrol, not oil-blended. Both lead-free and lead-containing petrol may be used. Do not fi ll with petrol while the engine is running.• To start a cold engine, push primer (3) times before trying to

start. Use a fi rm push. This step is not usually necessary when starting an engine which has already run for a few minutes.

• Hold engine brake yoke to the handle and pull on starter handle quickly. Do not allow starter rope to snap back.

• To “STOP” engine, release engine brake yoke.NOTE: In cooler weather it may be necessary to repeat priming steps. In warmer weather over priming may cause fl ooding and engine will not start. If you do fl ood the engine wait a few minutes before attempting to start and DO NOT repeat priming steps.

• Der Motor wird durch Loslassen des Bedienungshebels abgestellt.

HINWEIS: Beikaltem Wetter müssen die Bedienungsschritte für die Vorpumpe mögliicherweise wiederholt werden. Bei warmem Wetter kann durch zu starke Betätigung der Vorpumpe der Mo-tor Uuberfl utet werden, so daß der Motor infolgedessen nicht anspringt. Solte der Motor überfl utet sein, einige Minuten warten, bevor Anlassen des Motors erneut versucht wird, und die Bedi-enungsschritte für die Vorpumpe NICHT widerholen.

• Coupez le moteur en lâchant la commande.REMARQUE: Sous des températures plus froides il peut être nécessaire de répéter les étapes d'amorçage. Sous des tem-pératures plus chaudes trop amorcer peut étouffer le moteur et il refusera de démarrer. Si vous étouffez le moteur, attendez quelques minutes avant d'essayer de le remettre en marche et NE répétez PAS les étapes d'amorçage.

Arranque y ParadaColocar el cortacésped en una superfi cie llana (sin gravilla, gui-jarros, etc.). Rellenar el tanque de gasolina pura, sin aceite. Se peude usar gasloina sin plomo o con plomo. • Presionar el mando contra el manillar y tirar rápidamente del mango de arranque. Soltar lentamente el cordón de ar-ranque.

• Poner en marcha el motor soltando el mando.NOTA: En tiempo más frio puede ser necesario repetir los pasos del cebado. En tiempo más caluroso el cebar demasiado puede hacer que se ahoge el motor y no va a arrancar. Si se ahoga el motor espere unos pocos minutos antes de tratar de arrancar. Bij warmer weer kan te veel voorinspuiten ertoe leiden dat de motor verzuipt en niet start. Als u de motor verzuipt, moet u enkele minuten wachten alvorens hem te starten en de voorinspuitstappen NIET herhalan.

Nei climi più caldi l'uso eccessivo del cicchetto può causare l'ingolfamento del motore. In caso di ingolfamento, attendere qualche minuto prima di ten-tare di avviare nuovamente il motore. NON ripetere le fasi di iniezione col cicchetto.

Au cours de la période de croissance intensive, coupez l'herbe au moins deux fois par semaine. Ne jamais couper plus de 1/3 de la hauteur de l'herbe, particulièrement en période de sécheresse. Tondez la première fois avec la tondeuse réglée sur une position haute de coupe. Vérifi ez le résultat et abaissez ensuite à la hauteur souhaitée. Si l'herbe est très haute, passez la tondeuse lentement, éventuellement, la passer deux fois.

Annually (After end of season)Grinding and balancing the cutter blade. Remove the spark plug lead. Fitting and removing the blade require the use of protective gloves. Unscrew the cutter blade and deliver it to a service workshop for grinding and balancing. Tighten the screw properly when re as sem bling.

Jährlich (nach Beendigung der Saison)Schleifen und Auswuchten des Messers. (Achtung: Vor Demon-tage des Messers Zündkabel von der Zündkerze entfernen). Die Klinge nur mit Schutzhandschuhen einsetzen und entfernen. Schrauben Sie das Messer ab und bringen dieses in eine Service-Werkstatt. Bei der Montage die Schrauben richtig anziehen.

Apriétese bien la tuerca al volver a montar.

RegularlyStop the engine and unscrew the dipstick. The level should be between FULL and ADD. NOTE: the dipstick must be screwed all the way down in order to indicate correct oil level. Avoid fi ll-ing with too much oil.

Change oil after each season or after 25 hours running time. Run the engine warm, remove the spark plug lead. Remove the drain plug from bottom of engine and drain oil. Fill with new oil. SAE 30 can be used.

Ölwechsel einmal pro Jahr oder nach 25 Betriebsstunden. Den Motor warm laufen lassen, abstellen und das Zündkerzenkabel abziehen. Die Ölablaßschraube an der Unterseite des Motors entfernen und das Öl ablassen. Danach neues Öl auffüllen SAE 30.

Changez l'huile à chaque saison ou après 25 heures de marche. Al-lumez le moteur, arrêtez-le et enlevez le câble d'allumage. Enlevez le bouchon de vidange sous le moteur et vider l'huile. Puis rem-plissez avec de l'huile neuve (les huiles SAE 30 sont utilisables).

Cambiar el aceite cada temporada, o después de 25 horas de funcionamiento. Dejar funcionar el motor hasta que se caliente, pararlo y quitar el cable de encendido. Quitar el tapón de drenaje del lado inferior del motor y dejar salir el aceite. Poner después aceite nuevo. Pueden utilizarse los aceites SAE 30.

Cleaning of air fi lter. Slacken the screw, remove the lid and remove the fi lter cartridge.

Reinigung des Luftfi lters. Schrauben lösen, Deckel abnehmen und Filtereinsatz herausnehmen.

Over time, ground speed may decrease. Adjust as follows:• Rotate nut (1) on the underside of the housing to tighten cable.

Ground speed should increase.If ground speed remains the same, drive belt is worn and should be replaced.
