    Seeing that you alone carry the weight of so manygreat charges, guarding our Itahan state vriih arms,

    gracing her with morals," and reforming her \vithlaws, I should sin against the public weal if with long

    talk, O Caesar, I were to delay your busy hours.* Romulus, father Liber, Pollux and Castor, who,

    after mighty deeds, were welcomed into the templesof the gods, so long as they had care for earth andhuman kind, settling fierce wars, assigning lands,and founding towns, lamented that the goodwillhoped for matched not their deserts.     " Horace makes use of the logical puzzle known assorites {a-wpds, a heap). How many grains of sand makea heap or pile ? The addition of no one grain will make thata heap which was not a heap before. He also seems to haveasked how many hairs make a tail. See Plutarch's storyof the two horses in his Sertorius.

    * Horace is giving a summary of the conventional literaryopinions of his day as to the old writers. Ennius is calledsapiens because of his philosophical poems, and fortis,because in his Annales he recounted the fortia factapatrum. As to alter Homerus, this exaggerated phrase wasused of him by Lucilius (ed. Marx, frag. 1189).

    mighty Rome learns by heart ; these she views,when packed in her narrow theatre ; these shecounts as her muster-roll of poets from the days of

    LiWus " the >vriter to our own.*^ At times the pubhc see straight ; sometimes

    they make mistakes. If they admire the ancientpoets and cry them up so as to put nothing abovethem, nothing on their level, they are wrong. If

    they hold that sometimes their diction is too quaint,

    and ofttimes too harsh, if they admit that much ofit is flat, then they have taste, they take my side,and give a verdict vriih Jove's assent. Mark you !I am not crying down the poems of LiviusI wouldnot doom to destruction verses which I rememberOrbilius of the rod dictated to me as a boy : but thatthey should be held faultless, and beautiful, andwell-nigh perfect, amazes me. Among them, it maybe a pleasing phrase shines forth, or one or two hnesare somewhat better turnedthen these unfairlycarry off and sell the whole poem.

    '* I am impatient that any work is censured, notbecavise it is thought to be coarse or inelegant in

    style, but because it is modern, and that what isclaimed for the ancients should be, not indulgence,

    but honour and rewards. If I were to questionwhether a play of Atta's keeps its legs '' or notamidst the saffron and flowers," nearly all our elderswould cry out that modesty is dead, when I attemptto blame what stately Aesopus and learned Rosciusonce acted ; either because they think nothing can

    be right save what has pleased themselves, or

    hating us and everything of ours.*^ But ifnovelty had been as offensive to the Greeks

    as it is to us, what in these days would be ancient ?What would the pubhc have to read and thumb,each according to his taste ?

    ^^ From the day she dropped her wars,^ Greecetook to trifling, and amid fairer fortunes drifted intofolly : she was all aglow with passion, now forathletes, now for horses ; she raved over workers inmarble or ivory or bronze ; with eyes and soul shehung enraptured on the painted panel ; her joy wasnow in flautists, and now in actors of tragedy. Likea baby-girl playing at its nurse s feet, what shewanted in impatience, she soon, when satisfied, castoff. What hkes and dislikes are there that youwould not think easily changed ? Such was theeffect of happy times of peace and prosperous gales.^^ At Rome it was long a pleasure and habit to be

    up at daw'n with open doors, to set forth the laAV forclients, to pay out to sound debtors money underbonds, to give ear to one's elders and to tell one'sjuniors how an estate might be increased and ruinous

    indulgence curbed. The fickle public has changedits taste and is fired throughout with a scribbling

    craze ; sons and grave sires sup crowned with leavesand dictate their lines." I myself, who declare thatI write no verses, prove to be more of a liar than theParthians : before sunrise I wake, and call for pen,paper, and writing-case. A man who knows nothingof a ship fears to handle one ; no one dares to givesouthernwood to the sick unless he has learnt itsuse ; doctors undertake a doctor's work ; carpentershandle carpenters' tools : but, skilled or unskilled,

    we scribble poetry, all ahke.^^ And yet this craze, this mild madness, has its

    merits. How great these are, now consider. Seldomis the poet's heart set on gain : verses he loves ;this is his one passion. Money losses, runawayslaves, fireshe laughs at all. To cheat partner oryouthful ward he never plans. His food is pulseand coarse bread. Though a poor soldier, and slowin the field, he serves the State, if you grantthat even by small things are great ends helped.The poet fashions the tender, lisping hps of child-hood ; even then he turns the ear from unseemlywords ; presently, too, he moulds the heart bykindly precepts, correcting roughness and envy andanger. He tells of noble deeds, equips the risingage with famous examples, and to the helpless andsick at heart brings comfort, ^^'hence, in companywith chaste boys, would the unwedded maid learnthe suppliant hymn, had the Muse not given thema bard ? Their chorus asks for aid and feels thepresence of the gods, calls for showers from heaven,winning favotir \nth the prayer he has taught, avertsdisease, drives away dreaded dangers, gains peace

    " In 11. 131-133, Horace is thinking chiefly of the chorusof boys and girls who sang the Carmen Saecularc in 17 b.c. ;in 11. 134-137, he sets forth the function of the chorus,especially in association with religious ceremonies.

    * This account of the development of a Latin drama froma rustic origin may be compared with Virgil's sketch of therise of the drama in Georg. ii. 385 ff., and with the outlinegiven by Livy in Book vii. 2.

    " This ancient Italian metre, now generally believed tobe based on accent instead of quantity, was used by Naeviusin his epic on the Punic War, and is illustrated by numerousinscriptions. With the introduction of Greek literature intoRome, it gave way to the hexameter and other Greekmetrical forms.

    why am I hailed as poet ? Why through false shamedo I prefer to be ignorant rather than to learn ? Atheme for Comedy refuses to be set forth in versesof Tragedy ; likewise the feast of Thyestes scorns tobe told in strains of daily life that well nigh befit the

    comic sock. Let each style keep the becomingplace allotted it. Yet at times even Comedyraises her voice, and an angry Chremes storms inswelUng tones ; so, too, in Tragedy Telephus andPeleus often grieve in the language of prose, when,in poverty and exile, either hero throws aside hisbombast* and Brobdingnagian * words, should hewant his lament to touch the spectator's heart.^ Not enough is it for poems to have beauty :

    they must have charm, and lead the hearer's soulwhere they >vill. As men's faces smile on thosewho smile, so they respond to those who weep. Ifyou would have me weep, you must first feel griefyourself: then, O Telephus or Peleus, will yourmisfortunes hurt me : if the words you utter are illsuited, I shall laugh or fall asleep. Sad tones befit theface ofsorrow ; blustering accents that of anger ; jests

    become the merry, solemn words the grave. ForNature first shapes us within to meet every changeof fortune : she brings joy or impels to anger, or

Nor does he beginDiomede's return from the death of Meleager,*' orthe war of Troy from the twin eggs.** Ever hehastens to the issue, and hurries his hearer into thestory's midst, as if already known, and what he fearshe cannot make attractive with his touch he aban-dons ; and so skilfully does he invent, so closelydoes he blend facts and fiction, that the middle isnot discordant with the beginning, nor the end withthe middle.1^ Now hear what I, and with me the pubhc,

    expect. If you want an approving hearer, one whowaits for the curtain, and will stay in his seat tillthe singer * cries " Give your applause," you mustnote the manners of each age, and give a befittingtone to shifting natures and their years. The child,who by now can utter words and set firm step uponthe ground, dehghts to play with his mates, flies

    near the flute-player and sang the eantica of a play, whilethe actor gesticulated. All the comedies of Plautus andTerence close with plaudite or an equivalent phrase.
