In this beginners photoshop cs tutorial we will be taking a

photograph of a women and with photoshop graphic effects and

filter effects we will convert her picture into a cartoon drawing.

Cartoon Drawing Photoshop Images Effect

1. Open an image that you would like to manipulate. Make sure your image is in RGB mode. To check

this, go to Image under the menu bar - Mode - RGB Color.

Make a duplicate of this layer as you will be working on this layer going forward.

2. Now we will be applying the Poster Edges filter. To do this, go to Filter > Artistic > Poster Edges.

3. After the Poster Edges effect, we will Adjust the Brightness & Contrast with the values: Brightness

Value: 10 Contrast: 30.



4. Now we will do an artistic cut out effect to give it that cartoon look. Go to Filter > Artistic > Cut

Out. And this is what you get!

Neon Lights Photoshop Images Effect

1. Open an image that you would like to manipulate. Make sure your image is in RGB mode. To check

this, go to Image under the menu bar - Mode - RGB Color.

Make a duplicate of this layer as you will be working on this layer going forward.



2. Filter - Stylize - Find Edges

3. Invert the layer with keyboard shortcut Ctrl-I.

Lightwave Photoshop Text Effect

1. Create a new 800x400 RGB file with black background and use white text.

2. Use a font of your choice and type in your desired text - we will use lightwave in this example.

Make sure the color is white and centered on the page.

3. Make sure it fills about 65%-75% of the screen.

4. We will now warp the text. Select the text tool and on your text tool menu select the warp icon.

5. Set the style to Arc with Blend to 0, Horizontal Distortion to 0, and Vertical Distortion to 12.

6. Create a duplicate of your text layer and rasterize it.

6. Select your text layer and go to Filter > Stylize > Wind and use these settings



7. Do this twice.

8. Now go to Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 degree CW, and apply the Wind Filter again (or hit CTRL

F). Rotate and repeat until the text is again in its normal position. It will now look like this:

9. Duplicate the frosted layer you just made (not the text) and go to Image > Blur > Radial Blur with

a Zoom level of 100 and Quality at Best.

10. Now select your text layer and duplicate it. Then go to Image > Blur > Radial Blur with a Zoom

level of 100 and Quality at Best.

11. Go to your initial text layer, resize it about to 80% of its original size and drop the opacity to 60%.

Your image should look something like this.

12. Take the text layer and add a Pillow Emboss on it with these settings.



13. Add some color if you wish. You can do this by locking the transparency and filing in the layered

elements. I used yellow in this sample.

Water Reflections Photoshop Text Effect

1. Open an image of a lake or ocean that you would like to manipulate. Make sure your image is in

RGB mode. To check this, go to Image under the menu bar > Mode > RGB Color. Type in your desired

text using a thick font.



2. On your text layer. Right click and select Rasterize Text to conver the text to a graphic.

3. Make a duplicate of this layer.

4. We are now going to flip the duplicated layer. Select the duplicated layer. From the edit menu go to

Transform > Flip Vertical. We will also need to transform the height for this layer. Go to the Edit Menu

> Transform > Distrot. Transform the Height to 75% the original size.

5. Make sure your layer is still selected then go to the Filter Menu > Distort > Ripple with a value of

300.

6. We are now going to add a motion blur. To do this go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur with angle of 0

degrees and distance of 15.

7. Finally, change the opacity of the rippled layer to 60 percent.

Burning & Outline Photoshop Text Effect



1. Create a new 800x600 RGB file with white background and create a title using black text. Make

sure you center it and use a bold font such as arial bold.

2. Create a new white layer. Duplicate the Burning text layer and merge it down with the white layer

you just made.

3. Apply a Gaussion blur with a Radius from 5-12.

4. Go to filter > Stylize > Solarize the layer.

5. Now you will go to Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels

6. Duplicate this layer and then go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates. Use Polar to Rectanglar.

7. Rotate the Canvas by 90 degrees CW and Invert the layer using CTRL I.

8. Go to Filter > Stylize > Wind From the Right 3 times.



9. CTRIL I to Invert back to White

10. Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels

11. Go to filter > Stylize > Wind From the Right and do this a total of 2 times

12. Rotate the Canvas back to original state. 90 degrees CCW

13. Go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates. Use Rectanglar to Polar.

14. Create a new layer - make sure it goes to the top of your layers. Fill layer with gradiant Color 1:

#f97903 Color 2: #2f0d57



15. Change the blending mode of this layer to vivid light.

16. Change the blending mode of the layer with the wind burst effect to Screen.

17. Apply a Gaussian Blur of 2 pixels to this layer, and you have your burning outlined text!

Liquid Emboss Photoshop Text Effect

1. Create a new 800x400 RGB file with white background and create a title using Blue text. You can

use this color #1967e8. Center it on the page.

2. Duplicate the layer.

3. We will now be adding a few effects to the layer.

First apply an Inner Shadow with these values.



Now we will appy a Bevel.



4. Load the selection by going to Select > Load Selection and then go to Select > Modify > Border -

Use the value 16

5. Create a new layer and stroke it with 2 pixels.

6. Go to filter > Stylize > Wind - One from Left and One from Right

7. Rotate the canvas to 90 degrees CW and apply Wind again - One from Left and One from Right

8. Add a drop shadow With the Blend Mode color set to #3674d9.

In this tutorial, we’re going to create some really sharp-looking glow effects using a combinationof layer styles, the Pen Tool and Color Blending. The end effect is quite stunning and hopefullyyou’ll pick up some tips you didn’t know before.

Step 1:As with pretty much every tutorial I’ve ever written, we begin with a radial gradient. This one is pretty harsh and goes from a reddish brown color to black. Here are the exact color codes:

Step 2:In this tutorial, we actually need a pretty intense center, so what we’ll do is duplicate the layer we just made and set the one above to a blending mode of Color Dodge. There are a few types of blending modes, darkening ones, lightening ones, colorizing ones and inverting ones. Color Dodge is probably the strongest of the lightening ones. As you can see in the screenshot, it produces a pretty full-on center.



Step 3: Now in our glow effect, it helps to have a nice textured background. So we are going to create asort of smoky haze. To do this, create a new layer, then make sure you have white, #ffffff, and black, #000000, selected as your background and foreground colors.

Then go to Filter > Render > Clouds. This will give you the same random cloud pattern as above.



Step 4: Now set the opacity of your layer to Overlay and 30% transparency. In some instances thiswould be enough, but for our needs we want it even smokier looking!

So go to Filter > Sketch > Chrome and use default settings of 4 and 7 for detail and smoothnessrespectively. Actually you can probably mess around with those if you want, but the defaultsseem to be fine.

When you’re done, the result should look a lot smokier (once its overlayed at 30% transparencythat is). You can see the result in the background of the next screenshot.



Step 5: Now before we can start making glows, we need to have something to glow. Here’s where we break out the pen tool. If you have used the pen tool much I suggest playing around with it alittle. There are some tricky things you can do with shortcuts, but for this tutorial you don’t needthose.

In fact all we want to achieve are some nice curves. Fortunately this isn’t too hard. I find thetrick is not to use too many points. Instead rely on the Pen Tool’s natural curving and drag themouse out for each point so you get a big angle. In this S-curve shown above, I’ve only usedthree points, the starting point, the end point and one in between to give it the bend.

Step 6:Once you have a nice curve, create a new layer. Then click on the Paintbrush Tool (B) andchoose a very thin, hard brush. As you know, soft brushes are the blurry ones and hard brushesare more solid. In this case I suggest using a thickness of 3.

Note that you can have any color selected as your brush color because we’ll go over it with alayer style shortly.



Step 7: Now switch back to the Pen Tool. You must switch tools in order to do this next bit.

Then right-click and select Stroke Path. A little dialog box will appear as in the screenshot.Choose Brush and make sure there is a tick next to Simulate Pressure. This is important as it willgive your curve tapered ends which will make it rock!

Next right click again and select Delete Path.



Step 8:You should now have something like the above. Just a thin, cool swishy thing.



Step 9: Now we add some glows. The easiest way to make our glows is to use layer styles. And the bestway to tell you what layer styles to use is to tell you to download the sample Photoshop PSDfrom the bottom of this page and then open it up and look through them there.

In a nutshell, I’ve added two sets of glows. To do this I first use Outer Glow and then because Iwant a second glow, I change the Drop Shadow settings so that it becomes a glow (you can dothis by reducing the Distance and changing the blend mode to something like Color Dodge)

Oh and also I’ve used a Color Overlay to make the item white so that its like the center of an

intense glow.



Step 10:So now you have the same line but with a cool glow coming off it. The beauty of using a layer style is that you can copy and paste it to other layers. To do this you just right-click the layer andselect Copy Layer Style then create a new layer and right-click and choose Paste Layer Style.

Step 11:So now repeat the same process a couple of times to make more squiggly lines.

In this instance, I made one a little thicker by changing the paint brush size before I did theStroke Path bit of the process. I also made a third line and erased part of it and sorta made it join

the other two to look like a cool triangular shape.



Step 12:Here I’ve added some text in and applied the same layer style to the text layers.

It’s important to pay lots of care and attention to your text. When you’re first starting out, usesimple fonts and play with spacing between letters, words and sizes. You can achieve a lot with just some small tricks. Here I’ve contrasted the three words by making Glow a lot larger and inregular casing, then made Advanced and FX much smaller, with greater space between the lettersand all caps.

You can control spacing with text using the Character window. If it isn’t already open go to

Window > Character and it should appear. Mess about with the different settings until you learnwhat each controls.
