The airport operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is a community of businesses, organizations and government agencies that work together to provide safe, convenient air travel. Pioneers of airport innovation The world’s first automated FOD detection system, Tarsier, has been successfully installed at Vancouver International Airport. Tarsier, developed by QinetiQ, can detect and locate small items of potentially dangerous debris on airports runways and can operate around the clock in all weathers. A Tarsier system has been installed by QinetiQ at Vancouver, covering the airport’s north and south parallel runways, each of which is approximately three kilometres long. A display unit, providing the operations team with an all-weather, round- the-clock runway picture, has been installed in the airport’s Operations Centre. “We are proud to be the first airport in the world to install Tarsier. We have worked closely with QinetiQ since deciding to purchase the system last year and, following a series of demanding tests, we are now is a position to accept the equipment into active operation.
