THE CLIENTTitanic Belfast is one of the UK’s highest profile new visitor attractions. Opened in March 2012, Titanic Belfast enables visitors to re-live the Titanic story, from her birth in Belfast to the fateful maiden voyage and eventual discovery on the seabed.

Project Evaluation - Titanic Belfast

THE BRIEFAs one of Northern Ireland’s signature tourism projects, Titanic Belfast is expected to attract 425,000 visitors annually. Townscape was briefed to provide PAS 68: 2010 approved perimeter protection from vehicle borne terrorist attack to ensure visitors are safe while in the proximity of the attraction.

Working closely with the architects and Harcourt Construction, Townscape was also challenged to contribute aesthetically to the destination overall and make a positive addition to the visitor experience.

THE INSTALLATIONThe solution was the CT Block system. Townscape supplied 47 CT Blocks, tested and approved to PAS 68: 2010 V/7500[N2]/48/90 standard. The CT Block system installed at Titanic is made from a charcoal coloured aggregate which is sympathetic to the fabric of the building itself. Furthermore, Townscape incorporated hardwearing, attractive timber seating in a nautical theme into each CT Block, giving them a practical use for visitors on top of proven security.

The angular positioning of each CT Block enhanced the sharp lines of the building and the shallow foundations (100mm) meant installation was quick and cost effective, with no disruption to underground services and minimal contracting time.

THE RESULTSThe Titanic Belfast now has secure perimeter protection from hostile vehicle attack and a practical use which improves the visitor experience. Due to the care and attention in the manufacture and finish, the CT Block offers anti-terrorism protection with positive visual impact. Importantly, the CT Block enabled Titanic to maintain an open and inclusive perimeter.

The Insight

The Titanic Belfast project highlights how the choice of CT Block colour and finish can have a positive visual impact. In this project, the prestige charcoal colour contrasts perfectly with the silver building façade and the smooth finish complements the metallic cladding. Imaginative timber seating design ties in nicely with other landscape features.
