The ChallengeHoward Tenens is a privately owned logistics company with a warehouse footprint of more than 3 million sq feet. Its distribution fleet of 157 vehicles provides complete UK coverage.

Over the past few years, as the fleet aged, so did the cameras, which meant that many were broken or unreliable, and the firm finally got to the point where it had been running without cameras for two years. Howard Tenens run double shifts with short runs in the day, and long runs at night – following the removal of cameras the number of insurance claims against the company started to increase, because it was unable to defend itself against so-called “cash for crash” claims, as well as the time to process a claim increased. A typical example is a driver’s report might refer to one lone driver in a car, for example, but the claim might refer to four additional passengers, all of whom had “suffered whiplash”.

The SolutionWhen Howard Tenens replaced its fleet, it took the opportunity to install new cameras at the same time, and selected CMS SupaTrak to provide the state-of-the-art equipment and supporting software. As well as storing video footage in the vehicle this live camera solution also streams live video back to the CMS system when an incident such as a crash is identified.

Ben Morris, Director with Howard Tenens, says:The quality footage from the new cameras is superb and we’re getting excellent visibility with live tracking. Our insurers have given it their full approval, and in the few incidents we’ve had so far it’s been very clear which party has been at fault – as well as how many people the other vehicle has been carrying. Before there was never any claim that admitted 50/50 fault – so we always had to pay up. Now it’s very simple – when an incident occurs we are alerted by email and can view the video instantly, and see the evidence. Our drivers really like it too. We’re very pleased with the results so far.

This video, along with other data collected from the vehicle by the CMS system, is also used by the insurance company to investigate the claim and a crash reconstruction portal is available to assist them in this process.
