StructureThe company possesses a varied IT setup that is divided into two locations,Setúbal and Cacia, with various servers and approximately 1,000 workstationsusing computers ranging from Pentium II to Pentium 4. For the most part, thecomputers run Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and the centralized processesof integration, administration and management of the antivirus solutions arequite simplified.

In addition to ClientShield, the antivirus program for individual workstations,Portucel also has QmailSecure and DominoSecure to ensure the productivity ofits infrastructure. The protection of its Qmail servers is very important for JoãoBraga, head of production and infrastructure in the company�s IT department.

�One of the advantages of the Panda Security solution is the analysis andfiltering of traffic in the Qmail servers, which prevents virus-infected emails fromentering the network,� he said. He also cited the �frequent antivirus updates�as having influenced this choice.�

ImplementationFor Portucel, the integration of Panda Security solutions �brought down thelevel of intervention by technicians from the help center, as well as reducingworkstation downtimes,� said João Braga. The network itself benefited fromthis implementation, as there was �an increase in performance as a result ofeliminating malicious traffic.� But the protection should not interfere to thepoint of impeding users from achieving optimum levels of work.

The solution

One of the locations, with more than 600 computers, needs only a single virussignature file and updates, which simplifies the administration and updatingof all of the network�s antivirus software. Taking into account that each filemay serve up to 3,000 computers, the scalability of the IT resources is ensuredand helps keep the process simple.

Panda AdminSecure is installed in a computer exclusively to run Windows Server2000, so �centralized administration of the solution and ease of installation isvery important for Portucel given the company�s extensive network and thegeographically disperse computers on this network.�

The existence of two files, one in Setúbal and the other in Cacia, and theincremental updates system optimally reduce the external communicationsrequired to keep the most recent signature files available for the entire network.The perimeter of the network is protected by firewall hardware and there isno evidence of any incompatibility of this with the program modules. As longas two computers connect periodically with the Panda Security site, all of thecomputers will have the latest updates provided by the manufacturer.

Thus, once the process becomes totally automatic, the need for specializedpersonnel to intervene is substantially reduced, making it possible to offereffective antivirus protection that is updated in seconds without any type ofadministrator supervision.

Since Panda Security products are updated at least once a day, it is not difficultto calculate the enormous productivity benefits of this type of the solution.

SupportTechnical support is essential for a long-term relation, especially when dealingwith security solutions. The consensus on this point is clear: �There�s nothingto question about either the human or technical side of the Panda Softwaresupport team�.
