When Moy Materials Ltd were approached by John Sisk and Son and Kenny Engineering Services to assist with proposals for the phase 1 of the Roof Upgrade of the SSE Ireland Tarbert facility we were presented with a number of challenges. The Boiler House Roof on the Top Level Roof area required a complete strip off and reinstallation, on further investigation of this roof it was discovered that the existing metal deck was eroded and beyond repair. The Single Story Water Treatment Roof area had suffered considerable storm damage resulting in the existing asphalt waterproofing and screed to detach from the concrete substrate.

After carring out the required wind uplift calculations for the South West Coast of Ireland, we proposed that our Joiriside JI 56-225-900 metal deck was installed in accordance with FM Global attachment for metal decking to the Boiler House Roof. This roof area was then to be waterproofed with the Paralon FM Class 1 I:90 System to achieve the wind uplift requirements of the high winds projected for the area. As there was no U-Value requirement for the roof we proposed that our Eraboard High Density Cover Board was installed and waterproofed with the Top S Base Sheet and Paralon ARD/S Cap Sheet. This provided the required FM Global attachment of the roof with the fully bonded waterproofing system.

The Water Treatment Facility required a full strip out of the existing asphalt membrane and the screed was to be repaired using sand and cement to ensure the original falls were maintained. The same Paralon FM Class 1 I:90 System as specified for the Boiler House Roof was then to be installed with the approved mechanical fixings for the concrete substrate. Both Systems were approved as partially bonded systems would not have worked on the roofs due to the high wind speeds recorded in the South West Coast of Ireland.

Due to the favourable weather condiitions experienced and that both roof area were large flat areas with minimal detail works required, the installation of the Paralon FM Class 1 I:90 System progressed well ahead of schedle on both roof areas with no disruption to the operation of the facility.

The following photos show the detail work to the existing penitrations of the roof area. All of the up stands are the required 150mm up stand height and are counter flashed correctly with the Paralon ARD/S Cap Sheet. All overlaps are displaying a visible extrusion of bitumen indicating a successful bonding of the membrane.

The following photos show the installation of the Joriside HPS 200 Single Skin Cladding Sheeting to the parapet up stand. The up stand has been sealed correctly with the Paralon ARD/S Cap Sheet and counter flashed the required 150mm to the field area membrane.

The cables that run to the emergency smoke vent system were installed using our Surefoot Roof Block System to ensure that the cables were not layed on the completed Paralon ARD/S Cap Sheet in accordance with our recommendations.

The gutter area that was showing signs of rust and ageing was cleaned down with any heavy corossion removed with a wire brush and had two coats of our Elastogum liquid membrane applied.

The outlets were removed from the Water Treatment Roof and had out Ital Profili Outlets installed. The following photos show the before and after the outlets were removed and replaced. All the outlets were tested in advance of the clamping ring and leaf grates installed.

Our Arecco Edge Trim was installed mechanically fixed to the perimeter to accommodate the ideal termination of the Paralon Waterproofing System. The Arecco performs as an edge trim and has the required counter flashing for the Paralon Membranes ensuring there will be no debonding of the membrane where it terminates.

Both roof areas were completed to the highest standard of workmanship and have been issued with our 20 year materails and workmanship warranty. We are looking forward to providing further solutions to SSE Ireland in their facilities in Ireland and the UK in the future.
