CASE STUDY: VERTEX HOLDINGS

About Vertex Holdings:Vertex Holdings is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings. As a Singapore-based venture capital investment holding company, it provides anchor funding and operational support to a global network of venture capital funds, namely: Vertex Ventures China, Vertex Ventures Israel, Vertex Ventures SEA & India, Vertex Ventures US, Vertex Ventures HC, and Vertex Growth.

The Vertex family of funds invests in technology and healthcare opportunities in the early and growth stages, with over 200 active portfolio companies today. Each Vertex network fund operates independently with separate, local investment teams. Today, Vertex has a track record of identifying and growing disruptive, transformational companies into global champions.

The challenge: sharing transformational technology insights with investorsVertex was started with the keen sense that technologies would be a critical differentiator in an increasingly competitive world, and that more than ever, accelerating technological advancements and innovation will bring disruption or transformation to economies around the world.

With a global investor community including corporates, institutions, and sovereigns, Vertex regularly shares insights on how to take advantage of technological opportunities. It also helps clients understand the implications of disruptive technologies when formulating their corporate, portfolio, or economic strategies respectively.

It is in this context that Vertex set out on a mission to educate its investors and the wider innovation community on global opportunities in venture capital (VC), by sharing insights on investments, performance, and risks across the evolving landscape of this asset class.

The requirements: a partner with VC data to augment their perspectives and a distribution network to reach institutional investors globallyIn order to provide investors and the wider innovation community with a better understanding on the implications of disruptive technologies, Vertex wanted to shed more light on emerging technologies, leading startups and the global VC industry.

Given the relative dearth of data available in this space, Vertex sought a partner with:• Comprehensive, global VC data to provide

context to the study.• Talent and bandwidth to manage all

elements of report production, from co-creation of content and liaising with third-party contributors, to editorial checks, publication, and printing.

• A meaningful distribution network to reach their target audience – the global innovation community.

The solution: a leading VC data provider to support a global thought leadership campaignIn Preqin, Vertex found a partner with a leading global VC database to embark on a content partnership.

With the objective to provide clarity on opportunities in VC globally and supported by Preqin’s comprehensive coverage of this space, a detailed “blueprint” was produced with a strong focus on the sources of funding to set up the foundations for a thought leadership study on global perspectives in VC.

With the addition of contributions from general partners from within the Vertex family of funds, as well as insights from roundtable discussions with external

investors, fund managers, and start-ups, a 98-page report was produced to provide global perspectives on early-stage, disruptive technologies and VC ecosystems.

Working with Preqin allowed us to tap on their specialty in the alternative asset markets, specifically in the supply of venture capital. At the same time, our Vertex General Partners with their deep knowledge and networks also provided insightful perspectives on how they are deploying capital into transformational investment opportunities in their specific innovation ecosystems and domains.

From there, Vertex was able to leverage Preqin’s global readership network of more than 100,000 industry professionals from 100+ countries to share the insights and finding of the study.

The process: working with Preqin to publish Global Venture Capital Perspectives: A Preqin & Vertex StudyProducing the report was a significant undertaking for both sides, requiring expert input and coordination across multiple time zones. To this end, a core working team of 14 members was formulated – seven from Preqin and seven from Vertex.

The production of engaging, insightful content using Preqin’s comprehensive VC data coupled with contributions from senior executives including Preqin CEO Mark O’Hare reflects Preqin’s commitment to this project.

Vertex, for their part, were able to share their global perspectives on trending topics (e.g. artificial intelligence and automation, cybersecurity, Fintech) as well as investment opportunities, risks, and inflexion points in the various startup ecosystems with their investors and the wider innovation community.

The findings of this study were supported by the valuable perspectives of general partners from the Vertex family of funds, and external industry stakeholders.

With 34 contributors in total, including general and limited partners, producing the report took about 10 months with the final version delivered one month ahead of schedule.

Preqin's Japanese-speaking staff also reviewed a Japanese version of the report, going above and beyond to help Vertex improve its reach within the target market.

The results: sharing technological insights with a global audience of more than 65,000 investment professionalsBy leveraging Preqin’s readership network, the report was shared with more than 65,000 recipients, generating in excess of 1,000 independent downloads in the first month of publication.

By publishing the study on the Preqin Insights platform, an additional 600+ independent downloads were achieved within the next six months, bringing the total readership to over 1,600 unique readers (as at 12 June, 2020).

Thanks to a detailed report on the performance of this thought leadership campaign, Preqin and Vertex discovered that some of the world’s top universities, notable financial institutions, and professional services firms were among the readers of the study.

Overall, the collaboration with Preqin has enabled Vertex to shed more light on the emerging, disruptive technology landscape – one of keen interest and importance to the wider, global innovation community.
