Case Study: Steam Turbines for Waste-to-Energy

Afval Energie Bedrijf (AEB Waste and Energy Company Amsterdam)

    Answers for energy.

The worlds first Waste Fired Power Plant

The culmination of Amsterdams longexperience with waste incineration isthe worlds first Waste Fired Power Plant(WFPP), a new facility designed totransform waste with high efficiencyinto energy and building materials.

The WFPP generates sustainable electricityfrom waste. It is highly efficient andhas been awarded the Green Status

    signifying minimal environmental impact.

Project: The Waste and Energy Company of Amsterdam (Afval Energie Bedrijf / AEB)is an independent undertaking that belongs to Amsterdam City Council. Thecompany produces sustainable electricity, heat, metals and building materials, thereby creating value from waste. For the better part of 100 years, and using avariety of technologies and processes, AEB has been turning virtually all of thecity's waste (99%) into recycled-grade metal, gypsum and salt.

Waste-to-energy is an important com-ponent of integrated waste managementstrategies, assisting in waste incinerationto relieve pressure on landfill and disposeof waste that cannot be recycled. This isa double benefit as energy generated canbe fed either back into the plant itself orinto the local grid.

The aim of the new plant was to use asystematic approach to optimize recoveryof energy and materials, using proven

    technologies in new combinations.

    Nothing is waste!

    Project advantages:

AEB achieves the highest possible energyrecovery from the combusted waste, withincreased steam parameters. The reheatsolution is the core innovation enablingsuch recoveryThe plant produces waste materials whichare fully recyclable: energy for reuse in theproduction cycle, and high quality buildingmaterialsEnergy optimization in the process hasenabled an increase in efficiency from22% to 30%The plant gives Amsterdam more sustainableenergy from the same amount of waste, thuskeeping processing charges low

    Reheat turbine for high efficiency

A Siemens SST-700 reheat solution wasselected in 2003 for the 4 th generationWFPP. The 74 MW SST-700RH turbine isan extraction condensing machine usedin reheat configuration . It consists of onegeared high-pressure (HP) module andone direct-drive low-pressure (LP) module.Proven standardization ensures low invest-ment and life cycle costs. The SST-700RHhas a high volume flow and a large exhaust

area for high efficiency and maximal per-formance.

The plant was designed to burn 940.000tonnes of waste per year at an efficiency of22%. In 2007, with the SST-700RH at theheart of the process, this has increased to1.5 million tonnes at an efficiency of 30%.
