History

The fire department started in 1898.

Back then, they had a few men and

one hose. In 1952, the fire department

began serving Melvina, Clinton, Port-

land, and Jefferson. The area that they

service has about 5,000 people.

Using Math

Fire chief Dennis measures water in gallons

to fill the tanker truck They need to tell

time to get out of the fire in time. The only

have 30 minutes of air in an air tank. They

need to get the person that is hurt to the

hospital in the golden hour. They look at

numbers when they take blood pressure.

They need to read numbers to find the

address.

Reading and Writing

Firefighter read books to learn how to

fight fires. They read to learn how to

save lives. They have to go through 80

hours of training. They have to write

reports.

The fire truck is fast and has a siren. The siren goes WHEEEWW!

What If You Worked Here?

It would be fun because you get to save

people. It would be hard to fight the fire.

It would be scary to go into the fires. You

need to wear all the special equipment to

stay safe.

Interesting Facts

They get 30 to 40 fire calls per year.

The tanker holds 4,700 gallons of water.

There are 27 firefighters and they are all

men.

They go on about 120 rescue calls a

year.

The fire department can leave within

about 3 minutes of a call.

About the Project

The Cashton Elementary First Graders

visited many places in order to learn

about the goods and services our com-

munity provides to the people who live

here. A huge thanks to all of the busi-

nesses we contacted who graciously al-

lowed us to visit and learn. If you have
