but we stood tall and did the best we couldwith limited means. We were the one of thefirst in many areas. We were the first tohold regular meetings with City officialswhere we shared information about the stateof the City and more importantly our lives, and the first neighborhood to repopulate andbring life back to our flood stricken city. Weshould not be surprised. We have alwaysbeen the neighborhood on the cutting edge.

This past year has been challenging foreveryone and for those who were able tohelp us maintain our great neighborhood Ioffer a hearty thank you. Your time, however small, helped us get to where weare today. THANK YOU. I was alsofortunate enough to have Board that was asdiverse as the neighborhood we live in.These board members allowed us to treadthe murky waters of rebuilding knowing thatwe were well represented on the views, hopes, desires and dreams for theneighborhood. Deborah, Reg, Polly, Gary,Brian, Dave and Rob, thank you for a greatyear and the great work we accomplished.

We end this year with a great sense ofachievement for what we have accomplishedand look forward to an even better yearahead. Now more than ever we needeveryone to step forward and help out evenin the smallest way so we can maintain whatwe have and build a better, strongerneighborhood. Let’s work together to keepMarigny a great place to live, work and play.

Nominee Bios Continued

Jim and I have had a 20-year-old love affair with the Cityof New Orleans and her people, and I had alwayswanted to try my hand at running a Bed and Breakfast. On July 29, 2005 we closed on Elysian Fields Inn andmoved to the Marigny!

August 29...we have spent the time since last Augustrepairing damage to the Inn, our neighborhood and ourpsyches. In our spare time (there’s never enough ofthat) we try to hear as much music as possible, eat asmuch as we dare and attend any second line thatcrosses our radar. We cannot think of anyplace wewould rather be then in the Faubourg Marigny, in theCity of New Orleans, in the state of Louisiana!

Chris Costello

I have served on the FMIA Board for the last 3 years andam currently serving as president. I’m very interested inremaining on the board so that I can continue to improve

our neighborhood while preserving and nurturing thequality-of-life and character of the Marigny.

As an organization we have accomplished a great dealwhile I have served on the Board. We have taken overthe maintenance of Washington Square Park, launcheda new Web site, and this year alone, have organizedseveral clean ups and enjoyed our most successfulhome tour ever. One thing of which I am particularlyproud is the creation of the online bulletin board that wasup immediately following Katrina which allowedneighbors to share information, determine how andwhere everyone was, and start the process of bringingour neighborhood back better than ever.

My interest in helping to improve the Marigny started in1998 with the purchase and renovation my home on thecorner of Chartres and Mandeville, which earned the2001 Historic District Landmarks Commission HonorAward.

When not enjoying our neighborhood, I teach Chemistryat Loyola University and work with my partner John, whoowns a public relations firm located in the downstairs ofour property.

We are both transplants to New Orleans. John attendedLoyola University for his undergraduate, and I attendedTulane for my graduate work. We both fell in love withNew Orleans and its culture and decided to make our lifehere.

Simon Hand

I am originally from England and (via Missouri) am nowan English teacher at St. George’s Episcopal schoolUptown (I taught previously at UNO for six years); I havelived in the neighborhood—on Rampart Street--only acouple of years, but quickly became attached to it. I gotmarried at Bacchanal in the Bywater in May.

I have been attending FMIA general meetings sincebefore the storm and am glad for the opportunity they’veafforded me to get to know many of the members. I’vealso been attending board meetings regularly sincecoming back to the neighborhood after the storm andhave been editing the newsletter since January.

As a board member I hope to continue to edit thenewsletter and work with the rest of the board to makeour community a better place to live.

Marshall Gries

My name is Marshall Gries and I live at 624 St. Roch inthe Marigny. I have lived there for the last 10 years withmy partner of 18 years, Joe. Joe and I met in the mid1980s in New Orleans while I was in graduate schooland he was attending UNO. Following our respectivegraduations we moved to Europe where we spent 5years living as expatriates. Upon returning to the U.S. in1995, we spent nearly a year traveling the countrylooking for "home". We decided that the only city thatsuited us was New Orleans and that this is where we'dput down roots.

I recently resigned my position as a staff attorney withthe public defender's office in St. Tammany parish whereI headed up the juvenile division. That commute to thenorth shore finally became too much. After all, there isplenty of work right here in New Orleans!

I had wanted to become more active in the FMIA foryears but, until recently, didn't feel I had the extra time todevote. I would like to bring some fresh ideas to theFMIA. While we live in the most wonderfulneighborhood in the city, there's always room forimprovement. How about informational kiosks forposting notices instead of on every telephone pole? How about more trash cans on busy corners? Howabout citizen patrols? How about applying for grants forneighborhood improvement? We need to start thinkingoutside of the box!

Lend A Hand?Interested in a better neighborhood? A better City?Want to meet some amazing people? Consider joininga committee or being on the Board. We encouragethose who have a couple hours a week to considerserving on the Board or on a committee.

Now more than ever we need people to help us moveour neighborhood forward through the recovery. Ifyou can help, please contact a current Board Memberor email [email protected].
