Caste System Timeline

Evolution of a way of life

Early on

• 1100 B.C. The caste system was established along with the four castes. It was based on Hindu scripture.

• 300B.C. Kautilayas arthashastra is written which separate legal code for each caste.

Progress

• 1852 a.d. first school created for untouchables, this was a large step because now untouchables were able to learn a trade.

Beginning of a new age

• 1930’s B. R. Ambedkar begins an anti-caste movement, first real attempt for equality.

Justice

• 1950’s practice of untouchability is outlawed by India's new constitution, similar to civil rights movement in the United States.

Present day

• Castes documented to determine eligibility for scholarships similar to affirmative action.
