Multicultural Day
In keeping with the spirit of inclusiveness and respect for diversity, our terrific SRC representatives held a multicultural day last week. At lunch time, surrounded by food and henna stalls, music and costumes were on display. It was fun. Not to be outdone by all of this, Year 12 Society and Culture students, together with Society and Culture teachers
Ms Preketes, Mr Yiangou and Ms Higgins, performed a flashmob dance in the quad. Dressed in their cultural finery, the dance was a colourfully choreographed Bolly-wood treat. It was a pleasure to again witness students and teachers immersing themselves to celebrate our many cultures.

Battle of the Bands at Castle Hill High School
Together with students from Kellyville High School, Rouse Hill High School and Epping Boys’ High School, CHHS students met on Wednesday evening for the Battle of the Bands, titled Rocktagon. What a treat we had. Reptilian Reality, Optional Extras, Ouch Potato, Phat Brass, Blue Saturday, Midnight Blue, Diamond City and Set in Stone performed two numbers each, one of which was an original created by members of the band. The audience was really appreciative of this exciting initiative to encourage creative song writing and performance. It was loud, bold, intoxicating and so vital. I had a ball.
Thank you, as always, to our wonderful music teachers, Mr Nick Powning, Mr Nic Derricot and Ms Amy Danckert for their encouragement and support of this initiative. Winter break I hope all students have a restful winter break and parents are also able to unwind. Students will return to school on Tuesday July 19 after teachers have undertaken professional learning on Monday July 18. Warm wishes for the colder months ahead. Vicki Brewer

CHHS P & C Update from the President
As we draw to the end of Term 2 I would like to take
this opportunity to provide updates on the issues
concerning your P&C.
Canteen
Due to illness and the fact we have had a staff member
leave recently, the canteen staff have been working
extremely hard dealing with staff shortages and I would
like to personally thank Jo Sutherland and all her staff
for stepping up and dealing with the situation as well as
maintaining the excellent quality of food and more
importantly delivering it with a smile and good cheer.
On this note I would also like to welcome Dale Albers
and Wyli Kao to our canteen team. Dale and Wyli were
the successful applicants to the advertised Canteen
Assistants position. They have already undergone their
training and are settling in well.
The canteen is continually evolving over the years and
you may not be aware but a few years ago the P&C
made the decision to move away from soft drinks,
cakes and processed foods to a much healthier fresh,
home cooked and home grown approach. As you will
appreciate this means much more work for canteen
staff – added to that the fact that student numbers
keep growing means that we are rapidly running out of
space in the canteen. In an effort to ease this we would
like to utilise an unused storage area that backs onto
the canteen.
Uniform Shop
We have been using our new Point of Sale software in
the uniform shop for a whole term and I would like to
congratulate Margaret Pritchard for embracing the
change to the new iPad, which has a completely
different set of operations for her to learn. Although
there are still some teething issues on the whole the
new system is extremely successful and will help the
P&C manage, maintain and organise the uniform shop
and its stock.
We have had many requests to have the facility to
purchase uniforms online and I’m pleased to report we
should be able to offer this service next term. Please
see future Newsletters for details.
Planning for the future
As I mentioned previously the student numbers in the
school are increasing every year and with the
introduction of the rail line and the substantial
increase in housing / apartments that has been
approved within CHHS catchment area, this figure will
surely keep growing.
These developments could significantly impact the
school in many different ways and is a significant
concern for parents and families and given that we
believe that the school is already at maximum
capacity we are asking the questions:
How will the school cope with the increasing
numbers?
Does the Education Dept. have a plan in
place?
Will we keep losing oval space to
accommodate extra demountable classrooms?
Although any changes could be a few years in the
future we need to start thinking about it now. As a
P&C we need to support the school to manage any
changes but we also need to make sure the P&C has
a voice in any future plans for the school, as such we
would like to put together a small sub-group of
interested people to plan for this issue. If you are
interested in having a say on this panel please email
me at:
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 20th
July at 7.30pm immediately followed by the AGM
where all positions will be declared vacant and a new
Executive committee will be voted in. If you are
interested in becoming a member of the Executive
committee either in a named position – President,
Vice-President, Treasurer, Minutes Secretary,
Communications Secretary or just as a general Exec-
utive member, please fill in the nomination form
below.
Thank you.
Enjoy the break

Photograph of the Month June
The Photograph of the Month for June goes Anna Miao for her creatively, clever light and
shadow clock photograph. One minute past the eleventh hour the clock marks the passage
of the sun on a crisp and sunny early winter’s day. The shadows of the leaves are mere
transient images scooting across the landscape transforming their appearance to the whim of
the sunlight. Anna’s use of selective focus facilitates a beautiful contrast between the
sharpness of the leaves in the foreground and the merging of the leaves and sky in the
background. The hazy shadows of the leaves captured by the clock reveal an abstract
apparition frozen in that very moment in time. Well done Anna!

Castle Hill Medical Centre is seeking VOLUNTEERS for a Flu Study Are you suffering from the flu or flu symptoms and are aged 12 years or older? Castle Hill Medical Centre is conducting a clinical trial to study the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication in treating uncomplicated influenza, better known as flu.
HERE ARE SOME QUALIFYING SYMPTOMS: Fever over 38oC Cough Sore throat Stuffy nose Body aches Fatigue Headache
QUALIFIED PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE: Study medication Reimbursement for time and travel
All study procedures are performed at NO COST PLEASE CALL Sister Jenny Harvey-Hall or Elijah McKee at the Castle Hill Medical Centre on 9634 5000 FOR MORE INFORMATION Please don’t delay as you must be seen within 40 hours of the onset of symptoms to be eligible. Also, if you are less than 18 years of age, you will need to have the consent of your parents or guardians to become involved in the study.
Flu Study
Influenza is a highly contagious potentially dangerous disease that spreads through coughing and sneezing. While many people get a sniffle, sore throat and a bit of a cough and call it ‘flu’, these symptoms are much more likely to be the common cold unless you’re a bloke - in which case man flu can be potentially serious especially if your wife can’t put up with the whingeing any longer… Real flu causes high fever, hacking cough and severe aches and pains. Marked lethargy is also often present and this condition can be a real killer. In Australia the statistics are frightening. Flu kills an average of 3500 people annually, with 18,000 hospitalizations and approximately 300,000 GP consultations. The trouble is healthcare costs aren’t the only problem with flu, with some 10% of workplace absenteeism due to the disease. So imagine getting the flu and having a drug that would reduce symptoms to 12 hours or less if diagnosed and treated early? Castle Hill Medical Centre is part of a study looking at a novel medication with the potential to have such an effect. Nitazoxanide is the name of the drug and while its use in Australia is restricted to a little known condition called cryptosporidiosis (a parasitic infection of the bowel which affects mainly immunosuppressed people), it has been shown to have significant anti-viral properties, hence the I nterest in its effect on flu. It’s a very safe drug and has been around for ages. As with all studies, there is a 50% possibility of getting a placebo but hey, there’s not much out there that’s any better than placebo. The current drug of choice for the treatment of influenza is Tamiflu. Flu experts reckon it only reduces symptoms by about 12 hours so not much point going there. So if you get those horrible aches and pains, a high fever (>38),shivers and shakes, dry hacking cough and feel awful, get down and see us as quick as you can and get involved in the study (you need to get here within 40 hours of the symptoms starting). Oh and by the way, there’s a substantial fee paid to participants in acknowledgment of their time.

HELP 5 more families needed
Onojo visit from Japan
For a week in August (16th to 22nd August) we are welcoming 14 young students (10 girls and 4 boys) from our Japanese sister-schools in Onojo. The Languages Faculty is already busy preparing the varied and interesting program. We already have had offers to host 4 boys and 5 girls and are therefore looking for families who would be interested in hosting one of the 5 remaining girls. Students studying Japanese as an elective or those in Year 7 or Year 8 would be particularly suitable. Students who host
would have the opportunity of participating in the welcome and farewell party and an excursion to the Reptile Park (free of charge) We have always relied on the hospitality of the CHHS community in the past to help make our exchange program successful and hope that this year will be no exception. Please contact me preferably by email [email protected] or phone me at school (9634 4199) . Ms Donna Wood Head Teacher Languages
On Wednesday June 22, twenty-two students and two teachers went on a mini-tour of our local area which proved to be another great success for all involved. The day kicked off at 10am when we left Castle Hill High for the first performance at Beehive Day Care Centre. The children at the Day Care all loved the performance, with one little girl getting the chance to show her musical abilities by con-ducting the band. Band members also showed the audience each of the different instruments which allowed them to interact more with the per-formance. After a quick morning tea we packed the gear and hit the road again, this time headed for the aged care facilities of Donington Court and Flin-ders Village. Here the older members of the com-munity heard some of their old classics including a song from the musical “Phantom of the Opera”. One lady from the centre said that it was
Another successful Concert Band Mini-Tour
“good to see the younger generation getting engaged in music,” whilst a gentleman remarked that it put a smile on his face to hear the trumpet, the instrument he used to play in the army. After a quick pack-up we hit the road for a third and final time. We were off to the biggest performance of the day at Castle Towers shopping centre. After multiple trips up the elevators with all our gear, we were finally set up. The last performance was an amazing end to a great day with many people stopping to take photos and videos. Everybody left humming the tune to our final song, ‘Take on Me’. Overall it was a very rewarding experience which couldn’t have been possible without the help and support of Mr Lavis our conductor, and all the music staff at Castle Hill particularly Mrs Danckert and Mr Powning who was our bus driver for the day.

News from the Library
Picture Books are just for kids, right?
We have been celebrating all things picture books in the library this month, with all our favourite picture books
on display. We encourage students of all ages to read and enjoy picture books and many picture books are
written for older audiences, both teens and adults. As more sophisticated learners, older students can engage
with the interplay of text and image in more complex ways. We have been helping year 12 classes choose
related texts for their “Distinctively Visual” assessment task. Picture books are perfect for this assessment with
both textual and visual elements.
Picture books are also just great fun! Some of our favourites are:
