Castlegar & District Recreation Department and Robson Community School are pleased to offer 7 weeks of Summer “Cool” Camps packed full of action, adventure, games, sports, arts, craft projects and more! Camps run Monday – Friday 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Please register early! All planned activities are tentative and may change due to unforeseen circumstances. You will need to complete and return a participant profile and waiver before the first camp day.

Culinary Camp The most innovative, culinary camp.Summer Chef School has a full menu of fun planned for kids, designed to boost confidence, strengthen core cooking abilities, promote an appreciation for food, learn basic culinary skills and play fun games all about the culinary experience.

They leave with new skills, increased confidence and an appreciation for the value and importance of what we eat.

Guest Instructor Culinary Camp – Chef Geoff Teillier

Geoff is the Chef/Instructor for the Food Service Worker Program at Selkirk College’s Trail Campus, teaching Adult Special Education, life skills and employable skills for the hospitality industry. He completed his apprenticeship and earned his journeyman status as a Red Seal cook in 1985. He has worked at numerous establishments throughout his career, is a certified Food Safe Level 1 instructor, was a cub leader in Robson for 13 years and has his own catering business.

Dawn Graham has been embracing her Inner Diva for over 30 years as a singer, dancer, actor, writer and choreographer. After earning an Extended Minor in Dance at SFU, Dawn discovered Musical Theatre in the Kootenays, joining the Robson Choir and the Rossland Light Opera. She has sung at various local events, such as Concert in the Park, where she wrote and performed her One Woman tribute to Broadway! Dawn is excited to be sharing her passion for Musical Theatre with local youth.

Mentoring and Lessons - FREE

The “Summer at the Skate Park Program” is on for 2013 thanks to a grant from BC Gaming, organized by Kootenay Family Place and support from Columbia Basin Trust and Castlegar & District Recreation Department.

Ty Smith will be the program coordinator offering mentoring and support to all skatepark user along with 2 other coaches. The program has safety equipment available and skateboards free to use whilst at the skatepark.

The drop in learn to skateboarding program is free with the only requirement being a waiver form is signed once. Learn how to skateboard safely by developing the skills of standing, falling properly, stopping, pushing, turning/carving, tic tac, ollies, grinds and skatepark etiquette. The foundation, fundamental and advanced skateboard skills development are based on the Skaters for Public Skateparks/Drop In Curriculum.

A variety of special events will happen over the summer and there will be some great prizes available.  So come on down and enjoy some Summer Skate Park Fun!

Ideal for young riders who have basic bike handling skills, are comfortable on their bike and interested in learning off-road riding techniques. The camp focus is to gain skills and confidence with an introduction to basic skills needed for trail riding. Starting in a controlled environment on day one, then introducing these young riders to some basic, fun single track/double track trails on day two and three.

Skills covered include: braking, cornering, climbing, descending, balance skills, maneuvering over and around small obstacles, safety and trail etiquette. This camp is ideal as an introduction to trails and off-road riding. Some climbing is required.

**A minimum of a 20inch wheeled bike is required. **

Betty GoHard Rippers Teen Summer Camp: Level 2 10-14yrs

This summer camp is ideal for riders who have some trail experience and want to improve their riding and meet other kids who ride. Starting in a controlled environment on day one, the young riders will develop and practice their skills. Day two will include a shuttled single track ride allowing the riders to apply the skills learnt on day one. What To Expect! Day 1: Instructors will meet students in the designated lesson areas of the pool deck (signs posted). Please present your child’s last RC progress card to the Instructor. Instructors screen students to ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate level.Note: Decision to transfer students based on skill level will be discussed with parent.

Day 6: Half way reports will be issued at the start of today’s lesson. Parents, you may touch base with the instructor today to discuss your child’s progress so far.

Day 8: Parent Appreciation Day! Parents, feel free to come out on deck today and get a closer look at your child’s lesson, or better yet, Join the Class! Have fun!

Day 10: Progress Card Day! The card outlines successes and challenges for your child. It also indicates which level to register your child in next time. If the level is complete, they will receive a badge! If there’s more to complete, they will receive a sticker and/or tattoo! Note: pre-school parent & tot classes do not come with badges, but do have Stickers!

Parent/ Spectator Policy:The Pool area can be very busy with programs, activities, and swim lessons. To ensure safety for all and minimize distractions and blind spots for the lifeguards: All patrons are required to remain in the pool viewing area. Lesson parents may pick up children in the viewing area after their lesson. Please join us on the deck or in the water on Parent Appreciations Day!

Private lessons are not recommended for water safety knowledge, but for specific items that are not completed in a regular lesson set. Understanding the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education- judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries as well as defense and release methods in preparation for rescues of conscious and unconscious victims. Lifesavers develop stroke methods in preparation for rescues of conscious and unconscious victims Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Whether you are a babysitter, job seeker, or responsible citizen, knowing what to do in an emergency is a good skill to have. Learn how to recognize and respond to someone who is choking, not breathing, or has suffered a cardiac arrest. This CPR course teaches basic resuscitation for adults, children and infants. Great for INTERMEDIATE RIDERS: Develop your skills to ride more confidently on steeper, faster and more technical trails!

This 4-week program is designed to develop well-rounded technical skills over 4 sessions; learn a foundation of intermediate technical skills and build confidence on the technical style trails of the Rossland trail network. You will complete these sessions with enhanced riding skills, confidence, fitness and be inspired to ride more. Skills covered:
