    Topight Experience

Parker has used the background data and knowledge

gained from important industrial, mobile, offshore and

other applications to create the broadest and best per-

forming line of standard tube ttings in the world.

Why is Parker a topight manufacturer of ttings?

There are many reasons, but at the heart is the design

and manufacturing excellence that goes into every Parker

    product.

    Worldwide standardizing Activities

The Parker FluidConnectors Group supports the national

    and international standardizing activities. Experienced

engineers from certain countries and Divisions give

their input to national committees like SAE, BS, and

DIN committees in cooperation with the users of the

products. As a result, many ISO FluidConnector stan-

dards have been published. These ISO standards are the

platform for the international trading, interchangeability

and availability that is necessary for all globally operating

    companies using uid power technology.

    The Tube Fittings Authority:

Performance PlusSince 1929, Parker Hannin Corporation has served the marketplace with depend-able uid power technology. Today, Park-er offers more than 100,000 qual-ity pro- ducts for a broad range of industries and appli-cations.No other manufacturer presents a product line as broad as Parkers, nor an expertise as far-reaching in hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components.Much of that expertise originates with Parkers precision-made tube ttings, which were among the rst products manufactured by the company. As such, they reflect Parkers ongoing commitment to excellence. With more than seventy years of experience in product design, engineering, applications technology and manufacturing, the Tube Fittings Division Europe holds a leadership position few other manufacturers can claim. This leadership is further heightened and enhanced by the sharing of technology only possible in Parkers corporate family.

    Parange F37 technology

Parange technologyParker is the inventor of the Parange system and knows well how to deal with ared tubes and anged connectors. The excellent sealing performance and the high mechanical strength of Parange technology are achieved by continuous orbital tube forming. Proven millions of times, this connector system is backed by decades of experience. The Parange system belongs to Parkers leak-free DryTechnology programme. DryTechnology stands for leak-free systems with soft sealing at every connection point. Leading OEMs worldwide have specied the Parange system on the basis of its designed in freedom from leakage.

Parange F37The Parange F37 anged connector system is utilising this orbital tube forming technology for tubing assemblies from 38 to 140 mm outside diameter. It is intended for tube wall thicknesses up to 9 mm and pressure ratings up to 420 bar. This ange system corresponds to hole patterns according to ISO 61621; SAE J518; bore pattern 3000 (code 61), ISO 6162-2; bore pattern 6000 (code 62) and also ISO 6164 bore pattern. It is type approved by DNV and other major classication companies.

Flanges instead of welding: freedom from errors instead of riskMany tube connections are still being made by welding. Because even the best welders can make mistakes, every weld seam must be carefully checked. This, of course, costs both time and money. Also, there is a shortage of welders: this is costly, assuming that professional staff with the right experience and qualications can be found in the rst place. It is precisely in these circumstances that the Parange system comes into its own.Compared to welding, no special cleaning is needed either before or after anging. Neither degreasing nor anti-corrosion materials, nor indeed the quantity of energy required by welding, are needed here. No fumes occur during aring or assembly and there is no re or explosion risk.

Protected from corrosion and even Cr(VI)-free As a manufacturer of large ange connectors, Parker is employing Cr(VI)-free corrosion protection on Parange F37, as it has already done with its other Fluid Connector Products. The removal of Cr(VI) reects Parkers ongoing commitment to an environmentally clean and safe production process.

Flaring MachineFor smaller tube connecting projects such as the on-site maintenance of, for example, drilling platforms or ships, the ParFlare eco for processing steel and stainless steel tubes is available.

  • General information

    9 Catalogue 4162/UK

The machine works to the Parange process, proven millions of times over, affording maximum mechanical accuracy and reliability. It does not require any complicated programming or operation to manufacture rapidly smaller quantities up to 140 mm outside tube diameter. The maximum capacity of the machine is around 4.5 mm wall thickness for a 140 mm tube at a remarkably short cycle time of 30 to 60 seconds for the aring and 1 to 2 minutes for the total operation.

Complete range for virtually all diameters The F37 system complements the EO-2 soft sealing technology for small tube diameters; it also complements the proven Parange programme for the SAE product range. It offers the complete range of connector types: ange-to-ange, L- and T-block connectors, ange-to-port, male and female thread anges, ange bends and bulkhead anges.

A complete solution from one sourceFor users worldwide Parker is a systems partner available for tube ttings, regardless of tube diameters and for whatever pressures. The service includes planning, engineering, material and component supply, prefabrication, on-site services and maintenance. This eases as well the procurement and stockholding for tube connector systems. All this, of course, reduces costs.

Different Sealing SolutionsSince the bonded seals in the ange groove cannot wander, the pumping action frequently occurring in o-rings under load and vibration, leading nally to higher wear and thus to a shorter seal life, does not occur. Thanks to its high abrasion resistance, the sealing area also needs less expenditure on surface treatment than normal. As an alternative, the connectors can be equipped with F37 prole rings. These special seals guarantee high stability of form. Their extrusion resistance prevents their wandering into gaps, even when the anges breathe under pressure.

Conclusion The Parange F37 tube connecting system is enormously exible. Also unique is the consistently Cr(VI)-free tubing system. No other manufacturer currently offers a comparable solution for this kind of high pressure tube system a solution such as this will certainly be in demand not only in the offshore or shipbuilding industries. Certainly the developers of wind-power plants, large excavators and hydraulic steel construction projects, for example, will willingly take to this versatile, high pressure tubing connector system, which can be combined with other products, because it will save them time and money.

The Parange F37 Programme consists of two ange connection technologies: the 37 Flare Flange Connection and the Retaining Ring Connection.

    Connection technology

Parange F37 Flare Flanges In this conguration, the deburred tube end is ared orbitally to 37 by Parange technology. An insert, soft sealed by an O-Ring, is located into each pipe end. In between a bonded seal (optionally the F37 Seal) is placed. By tightening the anges together, a soft sealed, high pressure tube connection is made. Available as tube-to-tube connection or tube-to-port connection.

Retaining Ring Connection The retaining ring used in this connection is a stainless steel segmented ring covered by a stainless steel spring. It sits in a machined groove on the tube or adapter end. When tightening this system, the ange is pushed against the retaining ring, thus giving a form tight connection. Retaining ring connections complete the nonwelding Parange F37 range with bulkhead, male, female, weld and tube bend connections.

    F37 Seal

The F37 Seal was developed especially for the use with SAE anges. Compared to a standard O-ring the special prole of the F37 Seal is ideally adapted to higher pressures or unsuit-able surface nish of the anges.

Once installed into the F37 Seal groove of a suitable Parker TFV insert it does not fall off thus giving the installation much more ease and safety compared to the bonded seal version. In addition, the F37 Seal is a cost effective solution particu-larly compared to stainless steel bonded seals.

The F37 Seal is made of a polyurethane-based Parker com-pound with a hardness of approx. 93 Shore A. In comparison with other polyurethane materials currently available on the market it excels because of its increased heat resistance, improved performance against hydrolysis, and low compres-sion set values.

The particularly low compression set of the polyurethane compound ensures dimension stability of the seal over

a large temperature range. Its high extrusion resistance prevents gap extrusion even if the anges breathe under pressure. Due to the good abrasion resistance less prepara-tion is necessary on the surface nish of the sealing area of the ange. The frequently occuring pumping phenomenon of O-rings is prevented by the shape of the F37 Seal.

    Flow diameter of tube lines

Determining tube size for hydraulic systemsProper tube material, type and size for a given application and type of connector is critical for efcient and trouble free opera-tion of the uid system. Selection of proper tubing involves choosing the right tube material, and determining the optimum tube size (O.D. and wall thickness). Proper sizing of the tube for various parts of a hydraulic sys-tem results in an optimum combination of efcient and cost effective performance.A tube that is too small causes high uid velocity, which has many detrimental effects. In pressure lines, it causes high friction losses and turbulence, both resulting in high pressure drops and heat generation. High heat accelerates wear in moving parts and rapid aging of seals and hoses, all resulting in reduced component life. High heat generation also means wasted energy, and hence, low efciency. Too large tubes increase system cost. Thus, optimum tube sizing is very important. The following is a simple procedure for sizing the tubes.

    Pressure lines - 3 7.2 ms

    Return lines - 2 4.5 ms

    Suction lines - 1 1.8 ms

Determine required ow diameterUse table to determine recommended ow diameter for the required ow rate and type of line. The table is based on the following recommended ow rates that are common in the shipbuilding and offshore engineer-ing:

Avoid ow rates > 8 m/s!The resulting forces are high and can destroy the tube lines.

If you desire to use different velocities than the above, use the following formula to determine the required ow diameter.

Determine required wall thicknessUse tube/pressure calculation tables shown in the tube chapter to determine recommended wall thickness for the required working pressure and ow diameter of the line. Therefore choose a working pressure which is equal or higher than the required working pressure.

    Flow characteristics

Hydraulic systems are in most cases only rated with a ow velocity dened on the basis of experience. The pressure losses in lines are not taken into account, or measured later on when testing the system. As the pressure losses increase proportionally greater than the ow resistance, it is important to achieve the best rating of the system, that they are already taken into account when planning the tube connections. Cal-culation is not as difcult as it is often thought, and this chap-ter is intended to provide a guideline. Besides, it provides in-formation on how excessive pressure losses can be avoided, because pressure losses result in losses in performance and excessive heat. Noise occurs, and possibly cavitation in suc-tion lines.

MediumAll indication given with regard to ow restrictions and to ow properties refer exclusively to liquids. For gaseous media, the variable density of the gas must additionally be taken into account.

    Units

    (T) = Kinematic viscosity of the medium depending on temperature

    (T) = Density of the medium depending on temperature

    = Individual pressure loss coefcient

Only base units have been used. This has the advantage that the formula do not contain correction factors and there is no danger of confusion, e.g. that values are used with the wrong unit. In case values are given in other units the ow rate is e.g. often given in l/min it is advisable to convert them into the base units before starting calculation.

Pressure losses in pipe linesTo calculate pressure losses in pipe lines, it must rst be de-termined whether there is a laminar or a turbulent ow. Lami-nar ow is homogenous and without turbulence. In case of turbulent ow, the losses increase much more quickly.

The kind of ow is dened by the Reynolds number. With a Reynolds number of more than 2320, the ow changes to turbulent. The Reynold number is calculated according to the formula:

The Reynolds number is a non-dimensional number. The critical uid velocity at which the ow regime can change, is thus calculated from:

With a given ow rate, the uid velocity can be calculated ac-cording to the formula:

Subsequently, the pipe friction factor can be calculated. The pipe friction factor is a function of the Reynold number and also depends on the roughness of the pipe. As hydraulically smooth pipes can generally be assumed in hydraulic applica-tions, the pipe friction factor is calculated according to the following formula:

Finally, if all factors are known, the pressure loss in a certain pipe line can be calculated according to the formula:

Calculation of individual lossesA hydraulic system does not only incorporate pipes, but also valves, ttings, pipe bends etc. that cause ow losses. These individual losses are often much higher than the pipe losses and are calculated according to the following formula:

The inside scales effect the cleanliness level of the uid.Used in roll aring process the scales will contanine the ar-ing tools (high cleaning effort) and cause poor are surface quality.

Tube line fabrication guide for leak free systems

After sizing the tube lines and selecting the appropriate style of tting, consider the following in the design of your system:

    1. Accessibility of joints

    2. Proper routing of lines

    3. Adequate tube line supports

    4. Available fabricating tools

Every hydraulic, pneumatic and lubrication system requires some form of tube fabrication and tting installation for completion. Proper fabrication and installation are essential for the overall efciency, leak free performance, and general appearance of any system.

Keep tube lines away from components that require regular maintenance:

    Right-angled parallel clear

Have a neat appearance and allow for easy trouble-shooting, maintenance and repair:

Example for tube to hose connection:

  • 29 Catalogue 4162/UK

Avoid excessive strain on joint: A strained joint will eventually leak

Do not use tube lines to support other tubes Always x tubes onto a rigid point

with tube clamps Do not use cable channels to support tubes

    Allow for expansion effects

Avoid short tube length: Short tube lengths increase chance of fatigue fractures

Use adapter GZR or swivel connector for swivel ttings instead of short tube lengths

    Use appropriate tube clamps:

    Installation

    Support against actuating forces:

Tube lines have to be supported in certain dis-tances:Use sufcient tube clamps to support weight Use sufcient tube clamps to protect joints from vibration

Vibration has to be eliminated near by the connectors:

Parange ECO 170Workshop machine for F37 ange connections

The Parange 170 ECO is a compact workshop machine for 37 aring of ange connections. The orbital tube aring is achieved by a rotating aring unit which is driven by an electro-mechanical drive. The axial feed movement is achieved by two cylinders which are operated by a hydraulic handpump. The reverse stroke takes place by the spring effect of the two cylinders after opening the valve on the handpump. The tubes are mechanically clamped in-between a set of clamping dies. The machine features an adjustable tube stop for tube clamping (Tube Stop) and an adjustable stop for the tube depth to be ared (Spindle Stop).

The machine is used to form tube ends by means of a rotational action. It is designed as a workshop machine forinstallations of tube connections.

    Applications

Alternative to conventional welding of anges in shipbuilding, oil & gas exploration and similar industries. Workshop use, project work, plant maintenance, on-site assembly. Not for mass production.

  • Features, advantages & benets of Parange 170 ECO

    1. Cost saving Compared to welding or brazing, orbital anging is much less time consuming. Special tube preparation and nishing are not necessary. Flanging uses only a fraction of the energy needed for brazing or welding.

    2. Zinc plated tubing The Parange process allows the use of zinc-plated tubing. The cost for cleaning post process plating, or painting can be saved.

    3. Superior sealing performance The orbital aring process achieves a sealing surface of unique surface quality and mechanical strength.

    4. Process/Product concept Parange machines are especially designed to match Parker F37-ange standards. Machine, tools and products are ne-tuned for reliable performance.

    5. Workshop use The rigid machine design allows project work in on-site piping workshops.

    6. Short clamping length Clamping dies for 37 aring are optimised for minimum straight tube length.

    7. Easy to use All operational devices are obvious so that machine operation is intuitive.

    8. Quality - Consistent quality results are achieved by recommended values for machine setting.

    9. Constant are diameter The diameter of the 37 are is given by the tool contour and the Tube Stop adjustment. A chart on the machine indicates recommended Tube Stop setting.

    10. Prevention of over-aring The shape of the 37 are is given by the tool contour and the Spindle Stop adjustment. This prevents difculties to t the insert into the are.

    11. Flexible Different tube material and quality might require special setting of Tube Stop, Spindle Stop, anging feed and anging force. For best result, these parameter can be manually adjusted based on operators experience.

    12. Clean The Parange process is environmentally clean and safe. As no heat or chemicals are used, hazards from fumes or heat do not occur.

    13. Perfect for on-site work The machine features special attachments for transportation by fork lift and crane. The wide base provides a safe stand. This is particularly useful for on-site pipe installation in shipyards or in oil and gas exploration.

    14. Ready to go - The Parange 170 ECO is delivered including all necessary details like electrical plug, operator manual, declaration of CE-conformity, short instruction pictograms on machine housing and dimensional charts for tube preparation.
