Growing up as a surfer in the Basque Country, I learned very quickly that life is a journey. Work hard, dedicate yourself to what inspires you, and life will reward you with a journey that will take you further than you could imagine. As a young man, my inspiration was to be found in the rich hunting grounds of the Cantabrian sea, where I would challenge myself to ride the huge waves that visit our coastline every winter. Later, this obsession with riding waves led to an even deeper obsession with understanding the craft we use to ride them. So, in 2002 I entered the Pukas factory, where I was able to learn from the best. With Johnny Cabianca as my teacher, and guys like Mayhem, Tokoro, Chilli, PeterDaniels and Rawson passing along words of advice and inspiration, I was surrounded by the best. I worked hard, learned fast, and in 2005 I was rewarded with my own shaping room, where I devoted the next ten years of my life’s journey to making the best surfboards I can.
In 2016, we founded the Basque Country Surf Company. With a brand-new facility, state of the art technology and materials, and inspiration to build the best surfboards possible, the most exciting chapter in the journey had begun. The challenges of running our own business and factory have not always been easy, but the satisfaction of seeing ‘our’ surfboards being surfed at our local breaks more than makes up for it. It’s just great to share what we do with our customers – knowing that they are as passionate as we are!

PerformanceSeries
Just a few years ago, shortboards were shaped with performance as the only goal – they worked extremely well, but only for the top 5% of surfers. That’s all changing now. In recent years, the shapers have been working hard to put all that performance into a board that can be surfed by regular guys. By experimenting with new volume distribution, nose profiles, rockers, foils and base contours, our latest shortboard models paddle faster, catch more waves and drive harder than ever before, with zero compromise on performance. For the top 5%, this means ripping in a wider variety of conditions than ever before. For everybody else, it means ripping harder than you ever thought possible!

nce RIDER
What Mikel would describe as his ‘everyday-high-performance’ shape. The Rider surfs fast, loose and has a whole lot of flow. It’s a true all-rounder: full and forgiving enough to make the most of average waves, but precise and responsive enough to absolutely tear up the wave when conditions get good. Mikel has been working on this shape for over a decade, and the 2020 edition is better than ever.

Squeeze every drop of performance out of average waves.Using the Rider as a starting point, Mikel added a little extra volume, gave it a fuller outline and a flatter entry rocker: the result is a board that looks and feels like a performance board, but paddles faster, catches more waves and generates tons of speed to get you through the boggiest sections. Ride 2” shorter than your regular shortboard.

Summer ToysSeries
Surfer’s minds are opening. Many used to think that their ‘magic’ shortboard should work in every type of wave – basically it was shortboards all year, and a longboard for summer. But that’s all changed, and surfers are beginning to recognise that there are as many styles of shortboard out there as there are types of wave. This is especially true in small waves. Inspired by the paddle power and down-the-line speed of shes, eggs and discs that have made a comeback in recent years, we’re taking the lessons taught by these retro shapes and applying them to solid performance principals, to create a series of shortboards designed to absolutely shred on the gutless beach breaks of summer in the Basque Country.

oys THE MIX
Strikes the perfect balance between a high performance shortboard and a summer groveller. Mikel calls this board ‘The Mix’ because it’s a true hybrid: Thruster DNA means you will love throwing this thing around on bigger days, and the wider nose, flatter entry rocker and increased volume means you’ll love how easy it is to maintain speed and smash the lip in gutless surf, too.

Versatility is the name of the game with the Apex. The Apex packs plenty of performance DNA into a wider, flatter, curvier shape, making it an insanely loose and fast board that excels in a wider range of conditions than your average summer toy. Order it a couple of inches shorter than your regular short-board, use the five fin plugs to pick and choose the ideal setup for the conditions, then harness all that paddle speed to catch more waves in one session than you caught all last summer!

oys THE FOX
Fast. Fun. Forgiving. With its fast, fun and forgiving design, our Apex round tail model has proved to be one of the most popular summer models in our lineup. With the Fox Mikel has created a board - based on the Apex - that’s even easier to surf, making it the perfect choice for beginners and inter-mediates looking to graduate from their funboard to a real surfboard.Besides the wider squash tail, the Fox has added width in the nose, adding overall surface area and making it even easier to paddle and catch waves. Meanwhile, softer, boxier rails provide extra volume and easy handling, making it the perfect choice for surfers out to add new moves to their repertoire.

oys TXITXARRO
Flow, speed and momentum: these are the hallmarks of the classic fish. The original Txitxarro was a fish-thruster hybrid that was a great all-round board for small surf – lots of fun, easy to catch waves, and stable. But, while Thrusters are great for smashing the lip and on-rail surfing, when it comes to down-the-line speed and looseness, you can’t beat a twin fin set up. So that’s what Mikel decided to do with the new Txitxarro: take it back to something that’s a lot closer to the classic twin fin fish, but still has plenty of modern performance DNA thrown into the mix. If you’re looking for maximum flow, speed and momentum in small to medium waves, you’re going to love the Txitxarro.

ftBIG BROTHERAny fin set up goes with this ultra versatile shape.Whether you’re an experienced surfer looking for a one-board quiver for your next surf trip, or an intermediate transitioning from a funboard to a ‘proper’ surfboard, this ultra versatile shape fits the bill. Introducing performance design elements into a bigger outline, the Big Brother’s flat entry rocker provides fast paddling speed for getting into waves early, while curve in the tail means it also sits well in the pocket and turns on a dime. Perfectly balanced and suitable for a wide range of waves and conditions, the Big Brother comes in four fin options, from single to quad, making it the most versatile board in our lineup.

ftLONGBOARD HPYour day-to-day longboardMikel currently offers two longboard designs: Performance and Classic.
For his Performance model, he took the traditional longboard design and gave it a slimmer, more streamlined outline, with less width at the tail. Then he shaved down the rails and added slightly more rocker, making it more responsive on turns and comfortable on a wider range of waves. The result? The perfect board for modern progressive longboarding.

ftWAVE MACHINEStatic waves funEven though we have the Basque coastline on our doorstep, we’re as stoked as anyone about the growing inland surf scene. Which is why Mikel has developed a board especially for powerful static waves -Munich’s Eisbach, Citywave’s and similar wave pools are good examples – called the Wave Machine. Featuring fuller, soft rails for extra volume and easy handling, this board combines a medium rocker with a soft single concave to V at the tail that’s been perfectly adapted to the unique fluid dynamics of a static wave. Squash and Diamond tail options offer plenty of release: perfect for tail blows and other radical moves.

Semi Gun/GunSeries
As a surfer, big waves are what define Mikel Agote. As a shaper, guns are his DNA. Today, surfboard shaping is in a period of rapid evolution, and this is truer than ever when it comes to Agote’s big wave designs. With more and more surfers seeking to escape the crowds and push their personal limits, his mission as a shaper is to give the same improved handling and performance characteristics of his short boards to his big wave shapes. By experimenting with new fins positions, introducing wider noses and thinner rails, increasing overall volume for paddle speed and tail rocker for turns, the boards he is shaping today represent a whole new generation of big wave guns.

BAZOOKAThe Bazooka represents Agote's 'regular' gun design, for pushing your limits in solid, overhead surf. When it comes to surfing bigger waves, Mikel's designs become more specialised – so much depends on the surfer’s body type, surfing style and the type of waves surfed. Two boards with the same measurements can behave completely differently in the water: so, the Bazooka is a true custom creation.

Tips for Designing Your Dream Board
EPS or PU? When it comes to custom artwork for your surfboard, PU offers more versatility and scope for colourful, creative designs – the colours on these pages are all available sprays, in any combination. Applying spray colours to EPS boards is generally more difficult (and expensive), we only offer a smaller range of colours (options marked with *). For EPS type boards we recommend sticking with a single colour design. Color Print: Printing directly on to rice paper or fabric means your fully custom artwork can be realised on your surfboard. Send us your artwork, and we’ll take care of the rest – or just ask to see our stock designs.
