PathfinderPlus is Annual Meeting Program

The American Angus Association® will soon introduce a voluntary, inventory-based reporting system designed to capture additional reproductive trait data and to ultimately expand reproductive and lifetime productivity tools, such as longevity measures. Angus enthusiasts attending the annual meeting on January 21 will have the opportunity to learn about this new program during an informal presentation presented by Matt Caldwell, American Angus Association regional manager. The presentation will follow the annual meeting at approximately 1:30 pm on January 21, 2012 , Prairie Pavilion meeting room, Kansas State Fairgrounds. The new program, known as PathfinderPlus, will debut in early 2012 and provide Angus breeders and their customers with additional information to make effective selection decisions. “The PathfinderPlus program is a unique system that will allow us to more effectively capture reproductive trait data while providing participants with additional information at weaning processing time, such as calving ease, birth weight and weaning weight EPDs for calves out of inventoried cows,” says Bill Bowman, Association chief operating officer (COO) and director of performance programs. Breeders interested in participating in PathfinderPlus can enroll in the program through AAA Login, available at www.angus.org, beginning early 2012. To begin, breeders provide an online inventory of breeding heifers and cows in their herd. The primary requirement of the program is submission of heifer breeding records from the production herd. “Heifer breeding records are pivotal pieces to the PathfinderPlus program,” explains Sally Northcutt, Association director of genetic research. “These records will then be used in the existing heifer pregnancy evaluation and will also allow us to develop more lifetime trait measures such as longevity components.” In addition to heifer breeding records, each inventoried female will be required to have either a calf record (weight, preweaning disposal reason), a disposal code for the cow or a reason code for why the cow didn’t produce. “Disposal codes will help pinpoint why an animal left the herd and will greatly aid in the development of a longevity selection tool,” Northcutt says. “The PathfinderPlus program provides us the opportunity to identify superior genetics for traits that greatly influence profit but are traditionally difficult to measure — reproduction and longevity.” Breeders will be able to enroll in PathfinderPlus at any time during the year. Females 20 months of age and older are assessed an annual $3-per-cow inventory fee based upon the enrollment date. The fee includes performance reporting for the cow’s calf (CED, BW and WW EPDs). An additional fee is charged to reinstate or reactivate a cow. Bowman says the current Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®) reporting system will remain in place for non-participants, along with the traditional Pathfinder® recognition program. “PathfinderPlus is the most comprehensive route to generate reproductive selection tools on your herd,” Bowman says. “The program is streamlined to capture the necessary data for genetic predictions to assist you and your customers.”

Kansas Angus Association Board of Directors

Notes & News from Anne Happy New Year By the time you read this the holidays will have come and gone and memories of the special time shared with family and friends are tucked away. For some calving season has started and for others the anticipation of the fist calf is building. Sale catalog preparation lends an excuse for some to spend a few more hours indoors out of winter’s cold and still others are packing for their annual trip to the National Western Stock Show. Along with the New Year comes plans, challenges and most of all opportunities. As Angus breeders we will have many opportunities throughout the coming year to challenge ourselves to improve ourselves and our herds. My wish for you is to challenge yourself to get involved in the KAA, whether that is to attend the upcoming annual meeting and banquet or to participate in a KAA sponsored project , attend a state show or join us as we welcome Angus breeders from across the US to the National Angus Conference and Tour in October. Your involvement could start with something a simple as attending a fellow KAA member’s sale that you have never attended before which is an opportunity to learn from others as well as to make new friends. The friendships and network of resources you will gain from being involved are truly valuable.

Here's to the bright New Year, and a fond farewell to the old; here's to the things that are yet to come, and to the memories that we hold.” Edith Lovejoy Pierce

The President’ s Pen I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You. The first thank you goes to the membership for bestowing upon me the honor of being president of the Kansas Angus Association. I would also like to thank Anne Lampe, Bob Bailey and the Board of Directors for all that they each contribute. If you have not had the opportunity to serve on the board I would encourage you to do so. The association needs good people to serve and to help ensure the longevity of our association. Hope to see you January 21st, 2012 at the Futurity Banquet and I would like to invite you to come and support the junior show and our future leaders on Sunday the 22nd of January.

Walter "Cecil" & Sandra McCurry, Mount Hope, Kan., were inducted into the Angus Heritage Foundation at the 2011 American Angus Association® Annual Banquet at the North American International Livestock Exposition, Nov. 14 in Louisville, Ky. The Angus Heritage Foundation recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of the Angus breed and Association programs. New Credit Card Campaign to Benefit Angus Foundation INTRUST Bank to host campaign to raise money for the Angus Foundation’s Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus. Wichita, Kan.-headquartered INTRUST Bank announced a new credit card campaign to augment the Angus Foundation’s $11 million fundraising drive, Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus. The credit card campaign kicks off January 1, 2012, and runs through June 30, 2012. For any new credit card account opened during this time, the bank will donate $100 to the Angus Foundation. If the campaign’s goal of 500 accounts are opened and activated, meaning the account holder spends $100 within 30 days of opening the account, INTRUST Bank will donate an additional $25,000 to the Angus Foundation. The $100 donated for each new activated card and the $25,000 gift for achieving the 500-account goal means the total potential commitment could reach $75,000. In June 2010, the American Angus Association® and Angus Foundation announced INTRUST Bank as the new Angus credit card provider. INTRUST Bank was established by a cattleman 135 years ago and remains a family-owned, four-generation operation with more than 45 locations. The company continues play a major role in lending to the farming and ranching industry. Linda Cullinan, vice president of card marketing for INTRUST Bank, made the credit card campaign announcement during the Angus Foundation’s 2011 Supporter Recognition Event in Louisville, Ky. “I’d like to think one of the main reasons why our card has been embraced by Angus membership centers on our shared core values. We know your business and we understand what’s important to you,” Cullinan says. “The Angus Foundation is the engine that drives the success and the continued growth of the Angus breed. Our partnership and this credit card campaign provides a great vehicle for all Angus members and friends to make sure the Angus breed continues to grow and thrive.” Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president, says INTRUST Bank has already contributed more than $30,000 in outright cash gifts to our Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus. “In announcing another major pledge of support toward our $11 million campaign goal, we know our Angus breeders and friends will enthusiastically want to help us meet INTRUST Bank’s challenge that when successfully completed, will generate a total of $75,000 for the Angus Foundation!” Jenkins says. More information about how to apply for a credit card account with INTRUST Bank and assist with helping raise more funds for the Angus Foundation will be made available after Jan. 1, 2012. The Angus Foundation was established in 1980 as a

not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization to support Angus education, youth and research. To learn more about the Angus Foundation and the programs it supports or how you can contribute to the Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus, log on to www.angusfoundation.org or call 816-383-5100 .

The Perrier family sold bulls for all budgets, with prices ranging from $1750 to $7500. The top-selling bull was lot 77, Dalebanks Objective 0321, selling to Hashknife Ranch, Wilmore, KS. The Hashknife was also volume buyer, purchasing nine bulls. Second-high bull was lot 18, Dalebanks New Standard 0105, selling to Schepmann Angus, Holyrood, KS. Many buyers and sale staff commented on the consistent quality in this year’s offering, which represented the top 55% of the Dalebanks bulls born in 2010. Buyers clearly wanted to “have their cake and eat it, too,” as they bid most aggressively on low-birth, high-growth bulls with solid end-product genetics. K S J u n i o r A n g u s A s s o c i a t i o n Dear KJAA Members, January marks the beginning of a new year and a chance to look at the past and make goals for the future. The 2011 year was a great one for the Kansas Jr. Angus Association. At Jr. Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania we worked together in the show ring and contest competitions to capture yet another sweepstakes win. Throughout the year our members exhibited top quality cattle in many shows and participated in many local, state, and national Angus events. Looking back at our accomplishments I’m so proud to be a part of this organization and such an amazing group of people. Thanks to everyone for all of their hard work in 2011! As we look forward to 2012, I see many upcoming opportunities for our association and the Angus breed. Here are some of my goals for the KJAA: to continue our tradition of winning sweepstakes at Jr. Nationals in Louisville, to increase Kansas’s participation at state and national Angus events, and to make new friends and promote Angus cattle! Best of luck in the New Year and I hope to see you all soon.

KAA Member is Pres-Elect of KLA Members of the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) elected Sedgwick rancher, feeder and farmer Frank Harper as president during the group’s annual meeting December 2 in Wichita. The new president elect of the 5,500-member organization is Mark Harms, a seedstock cattle producer from Lincolnville. As volunteer leaders, Harper and Harms will represent KLA members during 2012. Harper has backgrounding facilities and grazes cattle on crop residue in Harvey and Sedgwick counties. He and his wife, Mary, lease the majority of their grass from her family in Butler County. They own both commercial and registered cowherds. Calves from the commercial herd are backgrounded and retained through the feeding phase. Some are sold through U.S. Premium Beef (USPB), a vertically integrated beef marketing company owned by ranchers and feeders. Harper’s registered cows serve as a cooperator herd for Harms Plainview Ranch, owned by Harms. The Harpers also partner with his parents on a dryland and irrigated farming operation. Harper is very involved in beef industry leadership. He currently serves on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Policy Division Board of Directors and on the NCBA Property Rights and Environmental Management Committee. Harper is a past member of the industry’s Joint Advertising Committee. Harper has served as vice chairman of the KLA Water Committee and on the KLA Policy & Resolutions Committee. He serves on the KLA Executive Committee and is a past KLA Harvey County director. He is a past member of the Groundwater Management District #2 Board of Directors, having served several terms as vice president. He has served in various leadership capacities with his local extension board and with the Sedgwick United Methodist Church. Harper graduated from Kansas State University with an agronomy degree in 1992. He is a 1988 graduate from Sedgwick High School. The Harpers have two daughters, Annie and Cora. They attend school in the Sedgwick school district. Harms and his wife, Kim, own and operate Harms Plainview Ranch. They raise registered Angus, Red Angus and Charolais cattle. The ranch utilizes leased grass in Marion and surrounding counties. Dryland farm acreage is used primarily for feed production. Beef must win, place and show By Anthony Pannon Chefs and quality-focused ranchers are a lot alike, where keeping customers satisfied helps win the daily race for business profits. Chef Brad Cornwall bets the same trifecta with those ranchers: demand, profitability, consistency. For the past eight years, this Texas native has run the kitchen at the 400-member Black Rock Country Club, a Certified Angus Beef ® brand-licensed leisure spot 15 miles south of Boston. “I moved up to Boston of all places,” he says. “My mother actually

moved here first and I thought, why not?” Life had already taken him far from his Lone Star roots. Before settling in the New England city, Cornwall graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York, and then moved to Germany for three years to hone his skills. Now he knows that no matter where you serve, meeting customer demands is a challenge. “We have a young membership that is well traveled and well versed in fine dining,” Cornwall says. Their expectations are high. The club competes with other restaurants in the Boston area, so going the extra mile in food preparation garners a competitive advantage. “It’s all about the service,” he says. “That’s the difference

between going to a restaurant and going to a quality club.” Yet, it does little good to wow them with service if the product disappoints. Supplying customers with a

product he believes in drives Cornwall. After a visit to a cattle ranch in Colorado, on a tour designed to educate chefs about the beef supply chain, he says he understands enough to build a base of faith. Knowing the science that cattlemen invest into producing consistently high-quality beef helps him in suggesting premium cuts. “We are looking for something that, if they have it, they are going to want to come back and have it again.” Part of that “something” is a copycat of European dining. Club members experience it as a social event with emphasis on taste-and-portion, which Cornwall noticed in his travels throughout Europe. “It wasn’t just hurry up, gorge your face and get out of there. It was a matter of eating to enjoy yourself, trying everything,” he says. Think of the concept as wine tasting: You want a glass of $100 wine without buying the whole bottle. Well, depending on factors in wine production—climate, region, fruit, to name a few—each varietal pairs nicely with specific foods. Cornwall applies this thinking to different cuts of beef and invents new dishes, building each around salads and greens. “You are still socializing and don’t eat that much. Members want a little compromise on eating healthy,” he says. Don’t worry, sirloin and ribeye will always be there, and so will other cuts of beef customers might not get every day. Members still ask for a 24-ounce steak, Cornwall notes. And they request beef for the total experience. “I mean, you go out to a restaurant to eat things that you don’t normally have at home,” he says. At Black Rock, Cornwall’s outside-the-box motto hatches innovation. “As far as dining goes,” he says, “consistency for me is, really, not to be consistent.” He understands that if customers become bored with the menu, they go somewhere else. The key is maintaining a supply of consistently high-quality beef that can stand up to a wide variety of preparations. It’s that demand for consistency at the finish line that sets this chef’s pace ahead of the pack. What A Chef Wants-First in a series of articles provided by Certified Angus Beef ,LLC.

Kansas Angus Auxiliary Happy New Year! Hope your holidays were happy and that you are looking forward to a new year. The Kansas Angus Auxiliary has several activities for you to be involved in. Starting off the year will be the semi-annual meeting of the Kansas Angus Auxiliary, which will be held at the Kansas State fairgrounds on Saturday January 21 at 11 am in the Prairie Pavilion meeting room. The Auxiliary supports our Junior Angus members thru scholarships and their various activities. These scholarships are funded thru the Auxiliary auction held during the Kansas Angus Association futurity banquet. We need all members to donate items for this worthwhile cause. Homemade goodies, gift baskets, crafts, and western or Angus theme items are always popular, any donation will be appreciated. All items auctioned that evening will help raise funds for our junior scholarships. With the start of the new year comes membership renewals as well as an excellent time to join for the first time. Be a part of a wonderful group of ladies and support our juniors. Varee McCabe ,President Kansas Angus Auxiliary

Serving as your 2011 Miss Kansas Angus has been an incredible opportunity that I will never forget. This past year being an ambassador for the Kansas Angus Association, Auxiliary, and Jr. Angus Association, I have met so many new people and have made life long friends. I have traveled a

total of 8,244 miles attending sales and shows all over the state and country, representing the best state association in the Angus industry! It is hard to believe that my reign is coming to an end, and I would like to thank everyone that has supported and encouraged me during it. This past year would not have been the same without the help of you all. I am reminded of a quote by Dr. Seuss as I think about my year ending, “Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.” You all had a hand in making this one of the most incredible experiences of my life and I will carry it on with me forever. Items needed for annual Auxiliary Scholarship Auction and Hospitality Don’t forget to bring an item for the annual Auxiliary Auction to benefit the scholarship program to be held during the Annual Banquet on January 21. Unique items with Angus or western themes as well as baked goods and hand crafted items usually sell well. Hospitality The KAA Auxiliary will host hospitality on Saturday, January 21, 2012, for members during meetings and educational workshops being held throughout the day at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Prairie Pavilion. Please bring to snacks and baked goodies to Prairie Pavilion office by 10am Saturday. There is no need to individually wrap or bag, as I will maintain service trays throughout the day. Thank you so much for your generous contribution of time, talent and treasured recipes. -- Melissa Cozzitorto, Ks Angus Auxiliary Hospitality chairman.

McCurry’s among Five Inductees to Join the Angus Heritage Foundation Leaders in the Angus industry were inducted into the Angus Heritage Foundation, Nov. 14 in Louisville, Ky. When the Angus Heritage Foundation was established in 1983, the American Angus Association® described the purpose as, “An incalculable debt to the many men and women who, for more than a century, have worked tirelessly and selflessly to make Angus cattle and the American Angus Association the leaders in the beef cattle world.” The tradition continues as five new members join the ranks this year. The 2011 inductees include Jerome “Jerry” Helgren, Lake Villa, Ill.; Anne Patton Schubert, Taylorsville, Ky.; Walter “Cecil” and Sandra McCurry, Mount Hope, Kan.; and Gary Dameron, Lexington, Ill. Lucile Rheude Patton, formerly of Earl Park, Ind., was inducted posthumously. Inductees were recognized during the American Angus Association’s Annual Awards Banquet on Nov. 14, in Louisville, Ky. Each inductee or a family representative received a framed Angus Heritage Foundation certificate, and all names will be permanently engraved on the Heritage Foundation plaque displayed in the library of the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. Walter “Cecil” and Sandra McCurry Denoted as Angus cheerleaders, Cecil and Sandra McCurry promote the Angus breed and Certified Angus Beef® brand to all who will listen. Cecil is the youngest of six sons of Walter and Cora McCurry. His Angus roots began in 1928, before his birth, when his parents purchased their first Angus heifer from pioneer Angus breeder, Johnson “J.W.” Workham, Cora’s brother. With their initial purchase, the McCurry Brothers Angus Ranch formed. His father’s advice, “Stay in the middle-of-the-road” when breeding cattle, is still the rule of thumb at the McCurry Angus Ranch. Cecil and his brothers traveled to shows across the country and have exhibited several champion bulls, females and cow-calf pairs at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). Cecil has been active in the Kansas Angus Association for many years and was on the state board of directors in the 1980s, serving as president in 1988. He also served on the American Angus Association Board of Directors from 1995 to 2001. Sandra, Cecil’s wife, is a lifetime member of the American Angus Auxiliary. She has served on several committees and received the Distinguished Woman Award in 2003. She was also selected as an honorary advisor to the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Board of Directors. Cecil and Sandra have three sons — Brad, Greg and Geoff, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. See page 4 for photo.

New Embryo Transfer Rule Began Jan. 1 A new embryo transfer (ET) rule, which took effect on Jan. 1, 2012, requires Angus producers who want to register embryo transfer (ET) calves to request an ET authorization when the first owner of a calf is different than the owner of the donor dam. The new Rule 104(d)(12), adopted at the American Angus Association®’s September Board meeting, states: If the first owner of the calf is different than the owner of record of the donor female, and the embryo removal date is on or after Jan. 1, 2012, the owner of the donor female must obtain and transfer an ET Authorization to the account of the first owner before the calf is eligible for registration. “Embryos may pass through several hands before a calf is born and registered,” says Don Laughlin, Association director of member services. “ET Authorizations allow the person who is responsible for flushing the donor cow to confirm dates, sires and type of flush (such as in vitro or split embryo) on a calf through the Association’s AAA Login service.” The authorization will confirm ET registrations when the breeder and first owner are not the same, creating a record between the buyer and seller of the embryos. The new rule will not affect every Angus producer. In fact, fiscal year numbers at the end of FY 2011 showed approximately 15% of all embryo registrations would need an ET authorization to be registered, if the rule was previously in place. “Before the new rule, the sire, donor dam, embryo removal date, sex of the calf and the birth date from the first owner (the person registering the ET calf) was known. Now, thanks to information from the person who owned the donor dam at the time of the flush, we will know the parentage, range of age and possibly the sex on any pregnant recipients. This increases accuracy of the Association’s records and decreases errors,” Laughlin says. He adds, “This rule will also provide an avenue for a seller to monitor registration of embryos or confirmed pregnancies from the donor of which they no longer have control.” ET Authorization is free and processed through AAA Login, similar to artificial insemination (A.I.) certificates. Contact the member service department at 816-383-5100.

Make Plans for Genomic Testing With spring bull sale season around the corner, producers should plan ahead to submit DNA samples in order to receive test results in a timely manner. “If you are considering genomic tests for this spring, now is the time to place your orders,” says Bill Bowman, American Angus Association® chief operating officer (COO) and president of Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI). “Members are encouraged to order their tests well in advance of spring bull sales to ensure that they have the results when needed.” Once breeders submit DNA samples, there is a 3-4-week processing time for most tests, and there are sale catalog deadlines to consider. “Even in today’s business of speedy turnaround times and weekly evaluations of expected progeny differences (EPDs), breeders can still miss their window of opportunity to include important information in their sale books,” Bowman says. “We encourage breeders to budget a four-week turnaround time in order to better meet marketing deadlines.” Angus breeders may submit genomic orders online through AAA Login and mail samples to AGI, which then processes the order for testing at the appropriate genomic labs. To learn more about genomic testing or how to submit samples, visit www.angus.org or call 816-383-5100.
