new Ways to Make Your Horse a Solid Citizen and Keep You Safe on the Ground, In the Arena, and on the Trail SGT. riCK PELiCANO with ELiZA MCGrAW
SERGEAnT RICK PELICAnO has been a mounted police officer with the Maryland national Park Police for over 25 years. In 1997 he began to conduct bombproofing clinics for the general equestrian public, translating the methods he successfully used to prepare police horses and officers into easy-to-apply techniques that help make riding safer and more fun for riders of every age, ability, and discipline. These techniques are featured in his bestselling first book Bombproof Your Horse (p. 000). Sergeant Pelicano is accredited through the American Riding Instructor Certification Program (ARICP), and was named Instructor of the Year in 1995. You can find out more about him, Pelicano Equine Training, and how to host your own bombproofing clinic at www.rickpelicano.com.
BETTER THAn BOMBPROOF
in his bestselling first book Bombproof Your Horse, Sergeant rick Pelicano of the Maryland National Park Police shared the one-of-a-kind, step-by-step exercises he uses to prepare police horses and riders for duty and transformed the concept of “bombproof” into a proactive form of training that any rider can apply to her horse. Now he’s back and taking “bombproofing” to a whole new level.
in Better than Bombproof, Sergeant Pelicano exposes the most common problems he sees in his bombproofing clinics and arms you with the seven “magic” under-saddle skills he feels every horse should know—some movements from the dressage ring and others from the world of Western riding. He tackles complex “compound bombproofing” situations, such as opening and closing gates, carrying flags, and discharging firearms from the saddle. in addition, you’ll find information on:
riding in parades, drill teams, and musical demonstrations, with details on 11 specialized movements, a complete sample ride, and instructions on how to time your ride to music.
Easy-to-use trailer-loading techniques.
Unique games on horseback that Sergeant Pelicano “plays” with his police unit to enforce horse and rider skills.
Plus, a special section on defensive riding techniques shows you how to avoid a suspicious individual or counter an attacker when out on the trail—just one more way to help you feel safer and more confident every time you get in the saddle.

“Don’t worry about where you fit in the herd’s hierarchy,” says “The Behaviorist,” ryan Gingerich. “Just train your horse.”
it is with this commonsense, “just do it” tenet in mind that ryan approaches rehabilitating and retraining horses with such classic “conflict behaviors” as bucking, rearing, bolting, kicking, and refusing to load. Through experience and study with some of the biggest names in equine and animal behavioral research, ryan has developed a way to safely work with your horse until you “delete” his “bad” behavior and replace it with a desirable one.
Through classical and operant conditioning you’ll learn to “meet your horse in the middle” of the language barrier with specific retraining tips for the most common behavioral problems ryan sees in his clinics and on his well-known show on rfD-TV: “space invading”; head shyness; problems with handling the horse’s feet; kicking; trailer loading; bolting; bucking; and separation anxiety.

Training Horses with a new Languagefrom “The Behaviorist”rYAN GiNGEriCH
When cavalia, the amazing equestrian-themed artistic performance under a “big-top” tent, first took North America by storm, few people knew who frédéric Pignon and Magali Delgado were. But the world was soon abuzz with talk of the magical spectacle these two remarkable individuals provided their audience—none could walk away unaffected by the powerful connection they demonstrated with their cast of beautiful horses. Now in this remarkable book, Pignon—a specialist in liberty and groundwork—and Delgado—a dressage rider at the Grand Prix level—combine efforts and share the secrets of the breathtaking relationships with horses they have cultivated over the course of their lives.
in a delightful narrative, readers discover how to read horse behavior and better understand their equine partners; how to always provide a giving and open friendship that “welcomes” the horse while ensuring he still gets the leadership he craves and deserves; and how to “play with” and enjoy horses to the utmost, whether at liberty or performing the most difficult of movements in a competitive environment. includes gorgeous color photographs of the couple’s horses, many of whom appeared in the show that first made them famous, as well as Pignon’s spectacular equine illustrations.

Real Do-It-Yourself Horse Training in 33 Comprehensive LessonsSEAN PATriCKMany horse training books are written with the experienced trainer in mind, but this comprehensive and highly accessible resource is written specifically for any and every horse owner. Sean Patrick eliminates the “guesswork” often involved in bringing along a green or problem horse, while at the same time providing instrumental lessons in the development of any riding horse, regardless of age and experience. His 33 steps lay a progressive foundation while focusing on and “counting down” to the lofty end goal of a truly “broke” horse: one that respects and trusts his rider and has a seemingly infinite skill set.
Patrick’s Countdown to Broke is the first “beginning to end” modern training program to be completely explained in one, fully illustrated book. With his explanations of industry lingo and jargon, his breakdown of today’s methodologies, and his patient guidance through work on the ground and in the saddle, you and your horse are destined to end with the essential skills necessary to pursue any equestrian discipline with confidence.

Simple Solutions for Better Position and Performance in no TimeWENDY MUrDOCH Kottas on Dressage is a distillation of the practice and philosophy of one
of the most highly regarded international trainers of the current era. Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg spent seven years as first Chief rider at the esteemed Spanish riding School before becoming an internationally respected teacher and clinician. Now he explains his techniques and theories in one glorious book.
Having stressed the need for the rider to establish correct posture and a thorough understanding of the aids before attempting to train the horse, the book goes on to highlight the value of establishing a rapport with the horse, enhancing his mental responses, and developing his physique with groundwork before progressing to work under saddle. Kottas-Heldenberg focuses on thorough, incremental development of the basic gaits, explains the value and execution of lateral exercises, and introduces advanced work—including tempi changes, pirouettes, piaffe, and passage.Throughout the text there are many personal anecdotes, and a number of commonly encountered problems are analyzed, and remedies offered.
Underpinning the whole text is the author’s fundamental stance on horses and training: “i always see the horse as a partner,” he says. “He must be trained slowly and patiently.” This book will prove instructive to all who empathize with this view and aspire to the development of classical principles.

ArTHUr KOTTAS-HELDENBErG with JULiE rOWBOTHAM
ARTHUR KOTTAS-HELDEnBERG was born in Vienna in 1945. His parents owned the oldest riding school in the city and he started riding on his own pony at the age of two-and-a-half. In 1960, he succeeded in joining the Spanish Riding School as an Elève (trainee). Progressing rapidly, he became an Assistant Rider in 1964 and a Rider in 1969. In 1981 he became Chief Rider, and in 1983 Riding Master. From 1995 until retiring from the School in 2002 he was First Chief Rider. In recent years, Arthur has been in great demand as a trainer and holds clinics regularly on an international basis. With a philosophy of training and riding firmly rooted in the precepts of the Spanish Riding School, he is a fervent advocate of true classical horsemanship.
All too often people try to apply the same training techniques, in the same order, with the same intensity, regardless of their horse’s defining characteristics. The result? At best slowed or stalled progress in learning movements and maneuvers, and at worst a fractured horse-and-rider relationship—or even a “ruined” mount.
Now Grand Prix dressage rider Britta Schöffmann has provided an in-depth key to the major horse types, as well as training “roadmaps” for each. She explains that no matter how experienced a rider you are, whether this is your first dressage prospect or your fiftieth, every horse is different, and each one must be treated as an individual when it comes to planning and implementing a training program.
Training according to the horse’s type is something anyone can do. With the guidelines, hints, and tricks provided in this book, you’ll find “reading” a horse before you get on him soon becomes automatic. And, whether you school dressage for fun, for competition, or to supplement your horse’s performance in another equestrian discipline, the six elements of the dressage Training Scale—administered in differing amounts according to the horse’s type—are all you need to ensure a happy, healthy mount and a thriving partnership.

it is no secret that many little girls fall victim to “horse craziness,” and childhood fantasies are often filled with long-maned ponies, riding bareback, and winning blue ribbons at horse shows. Those little girls eventually grow up, and while some of them manage to make horses a part of their life despite the inevitable changes that correspond with aging, others give up the dream in the face of real life challenges: a career, a family, and a budget.
But what happens when the nest is empty and the career has afforded a little extra money in the second half of life? Many women are searching for a new passion and purpose, as well as a form of healthy exercise, and rediscovering horses is the perfect path to fulfillment. This unique book is the guide women need to get in the saddle—whether for the first time ever, or just the first time in a long time. They’ll find valuable advice from doctors, sports psychologists, personal trainers, and of course, riding instructors, helping them determine the best way to make horses a significant part of the rest of their life.

A Grown Man’s Musings on the Opposite Sex in the SaddleMENNO KALMANN with illustrations by JEANNE KLOEPfEr
The world of horsemanship is teeming with women and girls who are totally devoted to their trusty steeds. Often, fathers or husbands are involved as well, dragged unwillingly and unknowingly into this alternate reality. One such man is the author of this book, whose life revolves entirely around his wife and her horses. He really doesn’t feel connected to horses in any way; he doesn’t speak the jargon, and he is locked in an unending struggle with stables, horse trailers, and arenas. regular nocturnal rude awakenings have been his lot—his experiences include helping a mare give birth, calling the veterinarian any number of times, and of course, packing up and accompanying his wife to competitions long before daybreak.
This book is a hilarious insider’s view of the “struggles” of the male who is connected with a horse-loving female. Anyone who has spent time in a relationship with either a horse, horsewoman, or long-suffering man will delight in reading it, and laugh out loud at the charming cartoons that ring all-too-true.

LYnn SALVATORI PALM is one of the foremost and respected horsemen in the world, and a pioneer among women in the horse industry. Her accomplishments include AQHA Horsewoman of the Year; AQHA Female Equestrian of the Year; a record four AQHA Superhorse wins; and over 34 World and Reserve World Championships. Palm is a regular commentator on RFD-TV and Horse TV, and a contributor to many equine publications, such as Horse & Rider; Dressage Today; Western Horseman; Horse Illustrated; Paint Horse Journal; and the American Quarter Horse Journal. She runs Palm Partnership Training with her husband in Ocala, Florida (www.lynnpalm.com).
Collection is one of the most misunderstood concepts in Western and English riding. Everyone wants it, but few people know how to get it. World-class rider, trainer, and clinician Lynn Palm now offers the one and only book that explains away the mysteries of collection while telling you exactly how to attain it. With 40 years experience riding and training champion all-around performance horses, and a background in dressage, Lynn has perfected an easy-to-use system of exercises that gradually collect any type of horse, regardless of his build, and that are of particular value to stock horse breeds such as Quarter Horses, Paints, and Appaloosas.
Lynn begins on the ground with in-hand exercises—free lungeing, ground-driving, and lungeing-and-bitting—to gain the horse’s trust and improve his responses to cues and commands. She then explains how you start in the saddle with simple transitions—such as halt–walk–halt—and gradually progress through stages that include more difficult transitions between gaits and markers; lengthening and shortening of stride; yielding on diagonal, straight, and curving lines; turns on the forehand and haunches; shoulder-in and shoulder-fore; haunches-in and haunches-out; half-pass; and simple and
flying lead changes. Learning how to bring your horse into true collection helps you improve his performance; create a more willing equine partner; extend his physical and mental longevity; and enjoy riding him even more than you already do. 192 pp • 8 ¼ x 10 ¼ • 225 color photos, illustrations throughout 978 1 57076 444 8 • $29.95 hc •September
Achieve Willingness, Balance, and the Perfect Frame with Performance HorsesLYNN PALM with STACY PiGOTT
What do excellent riders possess that most do not? This is a question that many ask, but few have explored the sport of riding for an answer. Denny Emerson, an internationally known rider and one of the chronicle of the Horse’s “50 Most influential Horsemen of the Twentieth Century,” has devoted years to thinking about this very subject. And now he shares what he has deduced to be the defining characteristics that make good riders, good.
Emerson has drawn the conclusion that there are seven factors that relate to becoming a world-class rider: personal drive, life circumstances, a sup-port network, knowledge, physical skill, character traits, and the horse. His book examines these elements and offers insight into what can be changed about yourself, as well as counsel as how to accept what cannot. Emerson provides real-life examples from his own riding career and features the stories of 25 other individuals who have attained “world-class rider” status in various disciplines. You’re bound to find Emerson’s words an inspiring leg-up for excelling in your chosen equestrian sport.

BREnDA IMUS is the world’s most widely recognized authority on the subject of gaited riding horses, actively traveling throughout the US and Canada teaching and presenting at clinics and exposi-tions. She is the author of two books, the three-disk DVD set Gaits from God, the gaited horse column for Trail Rider magazine, and has served as a consultant for EQUUS magazine. In addition to her teach-ing and writing, she designed the Imus 4–Beat Saddle built specifi-cally to accommodate the needs of gaited horses and improve their overall performance. She breeds and trains a variety of gaited horses in southwestern new York State (www.gaitsofgold.com).
renowned gaited horse trainer Brenda imus has spent a lifetime researching the gaited breeds and how those who ride and love them can keep them sound and happy. Over the years imus has found that common issues traditionally thought to come hand-in-hand with gaited horses—such as soundness problems and bad behaviors like spookiness—could often be attributed to incorrect training practices and saddle-fitting issues, amongst other factors.
it is with a fervent desire to ensure riders of gaited horses understand their equine partners’ particular needs that imus now provides the most comprehensive instructional overview of gaited horses ever in print. She thoroughly explains the ins–and–outs of riding, training, and caring for the gaited horse. Whether your passion is Paso finos, Tennessee Walking Horses, Missouri fox Trotters, or another gaited breed, the basic tenants of imus’ philosophy apply: proper hoofcare, appropriate bitting, good saddle-fit, and educated riding will help you optimize your horse’s natural gaits; prevent back, hock, and stifle problems; and enjoy the happy partnership both you and your horse deserve.

PEGGY CUMMInGS and her mentors, Sally Swift and Linda Tellington-Jones, helped shift the riding paradigm from “cramming and jamming” to a new model of horsemanship—one that honors horses out of knowledge and balance rather than fear or force. Cummings’ methods have become known as Connected Groundwork and Connected Riding (www.connectedriding.com). Today she gives clinics worldwide and helps countless students discover their own way to better riding. She lives in Poulsbo, Washington (www.connectedriding.com).
At a young age Peggy Cummings noticed that many horses were sadly inhibited—unable to express their innate curiosity, trust, and freedom of motion—and went about their work in a mechanical, stiff way. This inspired a lifelong search for real-world ways to achieve the “lightness” and “ease” promoted by top instructors and classical texts.
Now, in this long-awaited book, Cummings describes the essentials of her specialized groundwork—the first half of her acclaimed Connected riding® program—along with over two dozen highly illustrated exercises to help horses and their handlers find a reciprocal “connection” on the ground before attempting to establish it from the more difficult position in the saddle. These exercises—done both standing still and in motion—drastically change the way you see and feel your horse, and radically improve how your horse moves, responds, and goes about his work.

Anatomy of DressageHEiNriCH SCHUSDZiArrA & VOLKEr SCHUSDZiArrA
Only with a working knowledge of human anatomy can a rider fully understand the instructions given for correct position in the saddle and explanations of the movements. Originally published in Germany and previously published in English as Anatomy of Riding, Anatomy of Dressage presents a clear overview of anatomy as it relates to riding, written for the layman. Working from this anatomical perspective, the authors, who in addition to being father and son are also medical doctors, discuss the individual requirements of riding theory. Many of their conclusions may be surprising to readers, such as the notion that it is physically impossible to “brace the lower back” as we are so often advised by instructors. An absolutely fascinating read, Anatomy of
Dressage is required reading for the USDF’s Instructor Certification program.
