Precision Tools

GLASS AND OPTICAL

The use of glass as an architectural material,as well as for glazing, is expanding rapidly, and modern process lines are operating at ever faster speeds. To achieve the high outputs required, many tempering plants now have fully automatic seaming systems that use diamond belts to produce the necessary quality ground edge.

Automotive glass plants use diamond belt grinding lines for both sidelight and windshield grinding.

Scientific and optical glass industries employ diamond tooling in a variety of operations including lens grinding, sample preparation and the generation of groundglass finishes on laboratory equipment.

Other sectors of the glass industry that use flexible diamond tooling include crystal glass, fibre optics, opthalmics and many more.

CERAMICS

Diamond belts and discs are used in the porcelain industry in large numbers on automatic machines. This ensure the flatness of the base of the plates, cups and dishes because of the consistency of the finish and the durability of the tooling.

Diamond calibration rolls for accurate grinding of refractory blocks

Many technical ceramics also require the hardness of diamond for precision finishing.

KGS DIAMOND is the industry leader in the application of Flexible Diamond Abrasives to Precision Markets. Key to changing the way processes develop has been the partnerships with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). To maximise the benefit of Superabrasives it is important to optimise the speeds, pressures and through put of machinery. Whereas before, the main focus has been on hard brittle materials, now with the drive to automate processes, Superabrasives are much more cost effective on softer materials such as composites.


COMPOSITES

Trains, boats, planes and now windmills are rapidly changing to diamond tools for fast consistent finishes.Diamond offers rapid stock removal and consistent fine finishes for keyed surfaces.

New developments include diamond flap wheels for large curved shapes such as windmill blades.

Other materials which benefit from KGS grinding systems include glass-fibre, kevlars, carbon-fibres and epoxy resins

METALS AND COATINGS

Replacement of Chrome with HVOF Tungsten Carbide for hydraulic rams and shock absorbers plus rolls and cylinders in many different industries. KGS Telum® CH Diamond Belt System grinds hard coatings fast. It combines the accuracy of rigid tools with the speed, consistency & ease of use of a flexible belt system, and is engineered to replace both metal bond wheels and, in many applications, can replace the need for diamond film finishing.

Turbine Blade grinding either for titanium or for TBC (thermal barrier coated) blades in both aerospace and land based turbines.

Thin belts for grinding and polishing complex 3D shapes such as prosthetics, and for use in maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) operations in a wide variety of industries. Small drum belts and K-Loc discs are also available to provide complete solutions.

Roll Grinding, - in the steel and paper industries large metal rolls are used which often require rapid repair and refurbishment. KGS belts systems offer a far superior solutionwith significant time savings compared to conventional rigid tooling. In the oil, mining and drilling industry belts are used to grind and polish rams, spirals and mud-motor rotors.

KGS Telum®

Strong interlocking arrow pattern for precision grinding and polishing similar to conventional rigid diamond tools, with an even greater performance.

KGS Telum® CHResin bonded flexible diamond tools designed specifically for precision grinding & polishing of extremely hard materials, such as those used in the Thermal Spray Industry.

KGS Flexis®

Professional standard dot pattern range of highly flexible tools with a high temperature resistance due to superior heat dissipation

KGS Quadroflex™Very open and connected pattern for general purpose applications, which require high stock removal.

KGS Swiflex® K1Dry grinding and polishing technology, available in electroplated and resin bonded version.

KGS Swiflex® SDA

Resin bonded flexible diamond tools, which can be used for various applications for both wet or dry.


Grits

Diamond is the hardest material available which provides a predictable, consistent and repeatable finish for different materials. It is ideal for grinding and finishing applications on glass, ceramics, porcelain, composites, ultra hard steel, titanium, cast iron, epoxy and hard coatings.

BackingKGS flexible diamond tools are based on a proprietary fabric manufactured in Switzerland. This fabric gives good dimensional stability, high abrasive resistance plus excellent heat dissipation. This unique sheet can then be laminated onto many different backings depending on the application.

Tips and hints

If possible use coolant, this will enlarge the life of your tool.

Never use excessive pressure.

Cutting speed should be 20 - 40m/s, max speed 45m/s.

The use of CBN is advised for chrome stripping, removal of coatings and grinding “softer metals”(HRC<55).

Glazing

If too low a pressure is used, the diamond crystal can glaze, and it will lose it’s sharp edge and cutting power.

Glazed diamond in resin products can be re-dressed with an abrasive stick to expose fresh diamond.

Glazed diamond in metal-bonds cannot be re-sharpened as there is only a single layer of diamond on the Nickel.

GLASS BELTS - Large Nickel Belts for Glass Edging

KGS Telum® KGS Flexis®

ApplicationTempering plants that produce toughened glass are one of the main markets for large belts. The belts are used to arriss the glass on automatic lines from OEMs such as Ashton, Lisec or Bottero, or on stand-alone manual cross belt machines. Edge grinding of glass prior to laminating can also be carried out with belts for applications such as car windshields.

Recommended The recommended product for general use on normal glass thicknesses is KGS Telum® Red 200 grit. This produces a good combination of arriss weight and finish at the high speeds of modern lines. If a heavier arriss is required, this can be achieved with the same belt in a Black 120 grit specification.

Life - Dry RunningEither specification will give good life, producing a consistent edge over a long period of time. Automatic lines always use coolant to improve belt performance and maximise life, but companies such as Ashton, Bohle and Willian also offer manual machines with the option to use the belts dry, which can provide benefits in cleanliness and convenience in production.

All belt sizes are available in finer grits if required, and new developments are providing the ability to achieve a polished finish on the glass.

PORCELAIN BELTS - Strong Flexible Belts for Ceramics

KGS Flexis®

Strong Flexible BeltsKGS have developed a range of premium belts which are used in the porcelain industry for the polishing of plate, bowl and cup bases and cup rims. These belts are used on Lippert and similar machines, typical sizes being 750mm x 25mm and 1600mm x 8mm (all other sizes are available on request). These belts are designed to be both flexible, in order to follow the contours of the bases and rims, and very durable, to provide long life and thus lowest cost. They are available in a complete range of grit sizes allowing the highest surface finishes to be achieved.

Large Disc Options For large pieces that need to be processed manually, the range of KGS electroplated discs, either magnetic or self-adhesive, offers the same high quality and long life and are also available in the full range of grit sizes and diameters from 150mm to 600mm (See “Large Discs”).

Large, wide belts are also available for specialist machines.

Small Disc RepairsDiamond discs as small as 25mm are also supplied with soft backings for the repair and refurbishment of minor faults before re-glazing.

ROLL GRINDING - Nickel Belts - Grind & Remove Hard Coatings


ApplicationsNickel belts are used for high stock removal and consistent finishes on all hard brittle materials.Centerless Grinding and Tool Post Grinding applications are generally done wet for most materials. Some materials can be ground dry with careful set-up parameters and vigilant monitoring.Other softer materials such as fibre-glass & many composites grind very fast with a long life.

GLAZING - WC Removal Insufficient pressure/speed or “Firing” can lead to rounding of the sharp cutting edges of the diamond crystal. Issues relating to “Spark Out” calibration techniques - or removing existing WC coatings completely & going through to the steel substrate below can glaze the diamonds too. Often KGS Telum® CH Resin Belts can avoid this issue.

SMALL NICKEL BELTS - FOR HAND HELD MACHINES


ApplicationMany flat glass customers benefit from KGS belts for small hand-held machines. Non-standard shapes, awkward cut-outs and door hinge returns can easily be finished without dedicated machines.It is better to use a specialist wet belt machine for prolonged use, although many customers are satisfied using a dry belt machine.These belts are often used to remove over-spray for HVOF & TBC Coatings.

Pulley Issues Newer machines use a very small belt – 330x8 mm for those really difficult corners.Flexibility - Due to the pulley size for these small belts KGS Flexis® is normally better than KGS Telum®.Many KGS distributors can supply complete solutions with belts and machines from stock.

Tech-TipFor longer life, try to grind on the free running belt – not the platen, and if possible - not on the pulley!

Overspray Removal Often complex 3D parts coated with HVOF Tungsten Carbide or Ceramics will benefit from finishing with small belt machines.This includes removal of overspray from the powder spaying process.If used with care, exceptional life, compared to Silicon Carbide Belts, can be achieved.

FeaturesThe SDA is a thinner & more flexible belt than the KGS Telum CH. This enables these type of belts to be run on smaller pulleys for more intricate work.

Tech-TipSome operators use the Orange SDA BP belt with a free-running set-up for that final “brightness” rather than the KGS Telum® CH Orange.

ROLL FINISHING - Super-Finishing Strips


ApplicationThese long strips with tails are used on Super-Finishing machines for conditioning rolls.For example3200/1200x50 = 1200mm diamondwith 1m tails for lead in & lead out.Diamond is best suited to hard brittle coatings such as HVOF sprayed carbides and ceramics.Although sometimes used for coating removal - a belt system is generally faster and more cost effective.

Re-Furbishment of Rolls Although some rolls require a high reflective finish and low Ra values – others require a specific surface roughness for friction grip &/or ink or water retention.During the constant use of these rolls, they tend to lose this surface roughness and become “Polished” during use. Depending on the coating thickness, some rolls can be “Re-furbished” many times before needing stripping and recoating.

ApplicationsKGS supplies a full complement of large discs for all glass applications.The Metal Bond Nickel discs are used for the grinding stage, giving high stock removal and a consistent, predictable finish.These Nickel discs are used in combination with Resin Bond discs for the final polishing stages - as shown on the next page.

DIAMOND HANDPADS


ApplicationHandpads are versatile, general purpose tools that are used for a wide variety of manual applications such as grinding and polishing of glass, ceramics, stone, porcelain or composites.

They are often used dry, but if using resin pads to obtain a more polished finish, they must be used wet, - plain water is usually perfectly ok.The 75x75mm handpads have only 10mm foam - this extra flexibility means they are very suitable for grinding and polishing on profiled surfaces.

Availability The tables show standard grit sizes, with grits up to 400 being nickel bond, and 500 and above resin bond. For special applications, other grits such as very coarse Grey 50 grit plus White 800 & Blue 1500 in nickel, are also available.

QRS SheetsQRS sheets for wooden hand-blocks, orbital sanders, or discs with vacuum holes.Bosch or Fein triangles.Canvas, QRS & Self-Adhesive options are also available.

DIAMOND FILES & WHETSTONES


ApplicationFor sharpening chisels, drills and cutting tools, especially those made of Tungsten Carbide.

For Whetstones the diamond is on a sturdy Aluminium base with non-slip rubber feet.KGS Telum® products are more durable than the dot pattern industry standard and provide a better finish.

Use wet or with oil.

A dual grit of two strips 150x25 is available in 200/400 configuration.

Self Adhesive sheetMany customers make their own specialised files & sharpening tools by buying self-adhesive sheet and sticking onto their own forms.For example -Ski or Skate sharpening.

Special lapping plates can be made by utilising SA sheet stuck onto flat glass.
