Materials and Heat Treatment • All Damascus blades are manufactured from 4340 or 15N20 High
Nickel Steel and 1075 High Carbon Steel. Typically the knives are manufactured from hot-forged damascus billets featuring 64, 128 or 256 layers of steel in a number of patterns: Naughts & Crosses, Raindrop, Ladder, Basket & Twist. Blade Hardness is typically 57-59 HRC. All blades are triple tempered to reduce residual stresses resulting from quenching.
• Carbon steel blades are mostly made from D2 toolsteel with which exceptional harness (60-62 HRC) and edge retention can be achieved. 1095 or 5160 is also used on special orders.
• All stainless steel blades are manufactured from 440C Stainless Steel and are hardened to 57 HRC and triple tempered.
• Handle materials are aged turkish walnut (80+ year old gunstock wood), matured olive and wild olive wood, rosewood, handmade micarta, water buffalo horn or giraffe bone.
Note: The best quality steels can be inferior to more basic knife steel in performance and durability if not properly heat treated. The Key to a good blade is quality heat treatment.

Care Instructions KAPPETIJN KNIVES KNIFE CARE INSTRUCTIONS Carbon Steel, D2 and Damascus Steel Knives (not rust resistant): • Storage - Lightly oil and store in tightly wrapped plastic sandwich bag in
sheath. • Carry - Ensure knife remains dry and lightly oil regularly. Wipe of excess
oil. • Slaughter/food preparation - Ensure that the knife is cleaned and dried
properly after use. Oil lightly. An extremely thin coating of vaseline applied between tightly clamped thumb and forefinger can also be utilised very successfully to protect the blade.
Note: D2 toolsteel knives have significantly better surface resistance to rust and will only require slight oiling after cleaning.
Stainless Steel Knives: • Storage: Store in tightly wrapped dry plastic sandwich bag inside sheath • Carry and Use - No oiling is required. Clean well after use with mild
detergent.

Differentiating Factors • All knife designs are unique and represent very high value for money. Knife designs are extensively
researched and carefully developed to meet target customer needs. A lot of attention is given to functionality, aesthetics and ergonomics. Our knife designs appeal to serious users and collectors.
• All knives are individually handcrafted in limited numbers. This enhances the scarceness , collectability and investment value of our knives.
• Equivalent handmade knives sell for at least double the asking price. This is especially true of our damascus knives. We offer our handmade knives at factory made knife prices. Why buy factory made when you can buy handmade?
• Knife finishes include time consuming decorative filing finishes only found on much more expensive knives.
• Damascus steel billets utilised in the manufacture of knife blades are hand manufactured according to stringent requirements and are free of defects.
• Careful Heat Treatment (Hardening and tempering) results in the best possible performance and edge retention. Triple tempering ensures blades free from residual stresses that can result in premature blade failure.
• Great care is taken during every step of the manufacturing process to ensure excellent fit and finish. All knives are very solidly constructed to last a lifetime. We take no manufacturing shortcuts to save money. Each knife is individually quality checked.
• Our folding knives sport some of the smoothest and tightest folder mechanisms in the business. All folders can be easily maintained to ensure these qualities remain throughout the life of the knife; even if heavily utilised.
• We make some of the best handmade leather pouches and sheaths in the business. • Our products are visually appealing and evokes visions of pioneering days long in the past. They are
true conversation pieces.
