You can read about Music Express, our award-winning, cross-curricular primary music resource which is used by thousands of schools across the UK and beyond. We also have tonnes of great cross-curricular songbooks from Phonics to French, Spelling to Science, History, Maths… you name it! Find the full selection on pages 13–21. And don’t miss the brand-new series Sing! Play! Learn! with Go Kid Music on page 13 – each book contains 12 brilliant topic-based songs, all fully supported with video and audio as well as helpful teaching notes, whiteboard displays and graphic scores to help get kids singing, playing and having fun!
In the Whole-Class Ensemble Teaching (First Access/Wider Opportunities) section, you’ll find the ever-popular Magic series, including the newly-released Ukulele Magic Songbook, offering fantastic repertoire that follows the steady progression of the tutor books (page 23). We’ve also expanded the Get Set! Piano series with Christmas Crackers, which contains over 30 carols alongside quizzes and fun activities to support musical development from the very first lessons to Grade 2 (see page 31). For woodwind, brass and string tutor books loved by both teachers and students, take a look at the best-selling Abracadabra series on pages 28–30.
If singing is your thing, peruse our selection of resources for choirs and group singing – there are books of action songs for Early Years, classic nursery rhymes, songs from around the world, festive favourites and rounds, chants and partner songs to ease children into part singing. Or take on a full show, such as one of our Roald Dahl Musicals, with plenty of speaking and non-speaking parts, audio support, scores, activities and downright revoltingness (page 26)!
For the first time, we’ve included a little Teacher Support Section (from page 4), to give you a taster of some of our materials and a few ideas that you can use straight away. You can also read more about How to Teach Music: 100 Inspiring Ideas – three dip-in style handbooks of concise, practical ideas for different areas of music teaching (and Finalist for The Music Teacher Awards for Excellence 2018!).
We hope you find what you’re looking for and if we can help in any way, please do get in touch – we’re always happy to hear from you.
Here’s to another year of merry music-making!
Best wishes,

TEACHER SUPPORT
On the hunt for inspiration or new ideas? Take a look at these handy little excerpts from some of our favourite resources…
From Music Express (see pages 8–12)
‘Count up!’ is a great focus builder for older children (age 9+) with plenty of scope for variation – count backwards, in different languages or use five syllable phrases. How fast can you sing each version?
From Bobby Shaftoe, clap your hands (see page 18)
This warm-up to the tune of ‘The animals went in two by two’ is a great starting point for exploring sounds with voices and instruments, and children will love shouting ‘No!’ at the end of each verse!

From How to teach Primary Music (see page 7)
Graphic scores offer a brilliant springboard into composition activities and discussions around the inter-related dimensions of music.
Creative starting points 61
Graphic scores 48“This was a huge hit in my class!”
Children create their own symbols to represent sounds and create simple compositions.
Age: 6+
Resources: A selection of different soundmakers; paper and crayons
Demonstrate how to create some simple symbol cards to represent sounds on percussion, e.g. three vertical lines for tapping claves three times; a wavy line for shaking a tambourine and getting quieter; a swirl to show swirling a hand round the skin of a drum.
Play the sounds to the children, then ask if they can say which symbol card went with which sound.
Encourage the children to explore the different soundmakers and find a sound for which they create their own symbol. Share some examples with the other children.
Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to combine their individual sounds and symbols into a pattern or sequence. They perform their combined sequences to the rest of the class.
Discuss with the children how they might alter their symbols to demonstrate loud and quiet (dynamics), hard and soft (timbre), long and short sounds (duration), and high and low (pitch) if using tuned percussion.
Encourage the children to use body sounds and found sounds as well as classroom instruments.
Top tip
Ask children how they might show two or more instruments playing at the same time.
Taking it further...
Groups create sequences, and then invite another group to interpret their graphic score.

From Inspire Your Choir (see page 23)
Have a read of this excellent advice for new conductors – or even experienced ones!
118
First steps as a conductor
“I inherited this position as there wasn’t anyone else willing to at the time, but I’m not sure I’m any good.”
If taking the helm and conducting a choir is new to you, relax and follow these steps. It doesn’t have to be daunting or stressful.
Think about your targets and why you’re there. Who inspired you to do this? What did they do to inspire you? What do you want to try and do to improve this choir? How can you make a difference? Note these down and keep them for reference.
Don’t let repertoire or technically challenging pieces scare you. There is no pressure to do anything too tricky, so start simply and set yourself achievable goals.
Don’t apologise for your gestures and style – any conductor takes time to establish a style and character.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Give the task your all and learn from the mistakes you will inevitably make.
Ask other conductors of nearby choirs if you can watch them work. Take note of what makes it easy for the singers to follow the conductor and what techniques you could adopt.
If you have to pick up projects already planned, make sure you know exactly what is expected and devise a rehearsal schedule. If it feels overwhelming, think of ways to simplify things.
Film yourself and assess what you like and dislike about your style and how you come across to singers.
Top tip
Get to know the voices in your choir and hold some voice assessments. Develop a member profile with details, range information, vocal strengths and targets for the future.
Bonus idea
If you are joining an existing choir, trying to make radical changes too quickly is a bad idea. In your first few terms, you should respect their traditions and focus on doing a great job.

Roald Dahl’s Jack and the BeanstalkJack and the friendly farm animals defy the Giant’s phenomenal sniffing powers and Jack’s mother’s murderous way with a vacuum cleaner to come out triumphantly rich – and squeaky clean.
Roald Dahl’s The Three Little PigsPiggy No. 3 is in a tight corner: Wolf has gobbled up his neighbours and now he’s hammering at the door with sticks of dynamite in his hand. Who can Piggy call on for help? Sweet Miss Riding Hood, of course – the fearless wolf-slayer.
Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood and the WolfMr Wolf thinks he’s a match for Little Red Riding Hood and her three little piggy pals.
