FOREWORDI read recently that students at Washington University had lately been offered a new course entitled “Calling Bullshit in the Age of Big Data”. I thought it a splendid idea to run such a course, though I was disap-pointed to learn that it was limited to spotting BS in numbers. I suppose to expand that theme to the general world is far too big a subject as BS is all around us these days.Advertising of course is mostly BS; advertisers wanting us to believe their claims for their products. Gambling ads invariably say at the end “gamble responsibly”, surely an oxymoron. Corporations and government though are the worst offenders. Despite Don Watson’s efforts to discourage the use of “weasel words” and encourage the use of English that we can all understand, in his books “Death Sentence” and others, the corporates and government still insist in expressing themselves in terms we often find difficult to understand and which seem to be constructed to conceal the fact that they are mostly spouting BS. Microsoft, one of the world’s leading companies, is also a world leader in this. The Microsoft Australia Managing Director said recently, when referring to the opening of a new Sales Centre in Sydney “The .. Centre will enable highly trained sellers to leverage leading-edge technology platforms and analytics to better meet the needs of customers , with the right touch, at the right point in their journey.” Well I’ll be darned! What if I’m not at the right point of my journey? How would I know?
