Item Category: Ship ModelsItem Name: Full hull modelTitle: 121-Gun Ship of the Line HMS ‘Victoria’ 1859

Date Made: circa 1859Maker/Artist:Description: Scale: 1:64. A contemporary full hull model of the 121-gun three-

decker ‘HMS Victoria’ (1859) mounted on wooden display crutches. The wooden hull is complete with a number of fittings including two boats in the waist, anchors and gear, provisions for the hammocks along the bulwarks and a pair of telescopic funnels. The three-masted rig is extremely detailed with all the running and standing rope work included, which would suggest that this model was made to work out the logistics of operating a full sailing rig with two funnels directly aft of the masts. On the bow is a half bust figurehead, whilst the quarter galleries and open stern galleries are shown but not fully decorated. This ship and her sister, the ‘Howe’, were the last British three-decker first rates to be built, and the only ones fitted with two funnels as wooden hulled sailing warships. The ‘Victoria’ was designed by Issac Watts and built at Portsmouth Dockyard in 1859. Measuring 206 feet in length by 60 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 6960 displacement, she required a crew of 1000 men to operate her. She was fitted with a two-cylinder single-expansion steam engine manufactured by Maudsley, Sons & Field, and was capable of a speed of just under 12 knots. The ‘Victoria’ only saw three years of sea-going service when she was paid off and broken up much later in 1891.
