Why should we prefer your O-rings? The average diver might be aware of two main categories of O-rings commonly used in SCUBA

equipment NBR and Viton, and maybe two different O-ring hardness Sh70 (Soft) and Sh90 (Hard).

The reality is that there is a great variety of materials used in the scuba dive O-ring industry with the

used of compounds like Nitrile or else called Buna N, EPDM, Polyurethane and Viton®. However, there are many subtypes even within each compound category and same hardness, each having its

own properties and each having its recommended field of use.

Nowadays a great variety of O-rings are used, in scuba equipment than the traditional NBR-Buna-N

material, like EPDM Sh70, EPDMSh85, Viton® Sh75 -Sh90, Polyurethane Sh70-Sh90 and so on.

specifically selected and manufactured for SCUBA applications.

What is FKM?

FKM is the ASTM designation for the fluoroelastomer category. It is not a mark of quality. Not all FKMs

are equivalent, and some may fall short on desired performance.

What is Viton? Viton is a trademark of DuPont Performance Elastomers. Viton® was introduced in 1958 and

scientists and engineers have relied on DuPont and now DuPont Performance Elastomers Viton®

for its superior performance and unique properties ever since. However, DuPont Performance

Elastomers is not the only company that manufactures FKM products. Many people in the industry

incorrectly refer to any and all FKM elastomers as Viton®. Bear in mind that not all FKMs are

equivalent. As a result, you could end up with sealing products that are not the type of Viton® you

need let alone made of 100% virgin DuPont Performance Elastomers Viton®. Products not made

from DuPont Performance Elastomers Viton® may fall short of the expected performance levels

afforded by the stringent quality standards.

DuPont Performance Elastomers has set for Viton® which is manufactured at ISO 9002 registered facilities worldwide.

Are all fluoroelastomers "Viton®" fluoroelastomers? In a word. no! Only DuPont Performance Elastomers manufactures Viton® fluoroelastomer. Because Viton® is an established industry standard many people incorrectly refer to any and all fluoroelastomers as Viton®. To ensure you're getting the highest quality fluoroelastomer available insist on products made only with DuPont Performance Elastomers virgin Viton®.

How do I know I am getting O-rings made with Genuine Viton® fluoroelastomer? Look and Ask! Be sure to make Viton® an element of your part specification. When parts are shipped. look for the Genuine Viton® trademark. Not every supplier has a right to use the word Viton® in its products!

Why does VITON®

matter?

It is your guarantee of product integrity. When you use

products that carry this trademark, compliance to OSHA

Mechanical Integrity Section 1910.119 is assured. It means

that the parts offer the superior performance that only DuPont

Performance Elastomers Viton® fluoroelastomer provides.

Other fluoroelastomer parts may include blends and other

rubbers that deliver inferior heat and fluid resistance

performance.

Who can use the word "VITON ®?" Only manufacturers who have signed a formal agreement with DuPont Performance Elastomers can use

this trademark on their products. The manufacturers are selected carefully for their knowledge their quality

standards and for their ability to help you select the correct type of Viton® for your application. A well-

written specification will communicate your needs to your supplier who has up-to-date information about

the variety of Viton® performance types and who can suggest the most cost-effective recommendation.

Dose O-Ring colour matters? In a word No. At the very first steps of Scubagaskets, the decision to develop the black Viton® O-rings

product range for Nitrox applications due to the superior properties over brown or green material was taken.

The quality tests indicated that Black Viton compared to Green or Brown Viton with all parameters constant

except for the colour is favourable. It has higher strength better stability and better elastic properties

originally (brand new) and also after exposure to extreme situations that cause material fatigue. It also

possesses higher resistance to surface damage. At that time whatever O-ring had a green colour was

assumed to be Viton! The production of any colour material is feasible but requires the addition of pigments

and other chemicals which by definition change the elastomer’s physical characteristics. As divers we are

all highly sensitive to quality issues we would be very reluctant to compromise any amount of quality for the

sake of being able to identify Viton® by colour or follow the market trend. Furthermore, we should be aware

that nitrile-type and other materials may indeed be produced in green or brown or any other colour we can

imagine. If we judge only by colour then there is a great risk of falling into errors. We have chosen to

sacrifice the easy identification by colour for getting the benefit of the best possible quality. That was back

in 2006. As science evolves in such high rates in many areas, the discovery of new colour pigments

allowed the coloration of our new Viton® O-ring category in green colour with neglectable alteration of the

physical properties of the O-ring. Those pigments were used by scubagaskets for the creation of the

“Green” Viton® scuba O-ring range that is specifically developed and manufactured for PURE Oxygen

environments. The use of this new pigments, in this case, solved a very significant problem, that is the

differentiation of the first Viton product range intended for Nitrox from the O-rings rated for Pure oxygen

use. Without making any discounts on the O-ring quality scuba gaskets, became the first brand globally in

2018, to have available for sale 2 different kinds of Viton® Scuba O-rings, one for Nitrox Black Viton® and

Green Viton® for pure oxygen use!

The O-rings are packed in straight-sided jars, which have been specifically designed so you can place them on top of each other and save storage space. The containers are closed with safety seal, which allows you to ensure quality before you buy by checking that the seal is in place

Very recently, due to our environmental sensitivities, we offer an

alternative packing that is made out of carton in order to reduce the

use of plastics as much as possible. Is up to the consumer to

choose the most suitable packing for him. The carton packing also

protect the O-rings from elements but it cannot be used for staking

due to its shape. Usually our customers use in their first order the

plastic packing, and at their following orders use the carton packing

in order to refill their plastic containers.
