I had to take down my glasses and rest my arms. A quarter of an hour later I was again attracted by the cries of a Lark and looking up saw what seemed to Ibe the continuation of the same contest of speed and endurance. But in a few moments

the Hawk turned away, volplaned down at tremendous speed and alighted on a little mound in the salt marsh. I could not

say for certain whether it was the same Lark and whether the

struggle for life and death had gone on the whole time. But if so, it speaks eloquently for the endurance of the Skylark. At another time in spring I watched a similar battle. On this occasion as soon as the Hawk had desisted the Lark burst into

song as if its life had not been in jeopardy. So often have birds like Larks and Pipits been seen to -escape from these attacks that the conclusion is forced on one that it is only the unfit or diseased birds that really fall victims. Hence it seems that birds of prey not

only serve to maintain '-' the balance of nature

" but also to

contribute to the health and vigour of the species on which they prey.
