Dear Co l l eagues ,
2018 went down in h i s to r y as a key tu rn ing po in t fo r bo th Turkey and the w ider wor ld . The year in wh ich Rönesans became the n in th- la rges t cons t ruc t ion and inves tment company in Europe , w i th i t s work fo rce o f over 75,000 employees across 28 count r ies , a l so happened to be the year o f c r i t i ca l and ma jo r p ro jec ts fo r RH I .
I t i s a source o f p r ide fo r us a l l tha t Rönesans has pu t i t s s tamp on compe l l i ng p ro jec ts in the indus t r y i t has long been s t ra teg ica l l y focused on , and in the wor ld ’s mos t cha l l eng ing loca t ions . Our p ro jec ts s ta r t a t the Nor th Po le , where the a i r tempera tu re d rops to –50 degrees Ce ls ius , and ex tend to A f r i ca , where 50°C can be the day t ime norm. Wh i le inc reas ing the number o f such p ro jec ts tha t we under take in coopera t ion w i th our g loba l l y s ign i f i can t bus iness par tners , we a re expand ing the a rea over wh ich we opera te .
The Amur Gas Process ing P lan t , the cons t ruc t ion o f wh ich we began in 2018, i s fu r ther p roo f o f our ab i l i t y to work e f f i c ien t l y to meet exh i l a ra t ing challenges. This Gazprom project, our construction o f wh ich i s con t inu ing in the Amur Reg ion ( in Eas te rn S iber ia , near the Ch inese border ) , w i l l be the la rges t in Russ ia , and one o f the mos t no tab le gas t rea tment p lan ts in the wor ld .
In the same way, the Arc t i c LNG 2 p ro jec t in the Murmansk Reg ion o f Russ ia , the con t rac tua l agreement o f wh ich we conc luded w i th I ta l i an eng ineer ing company Sa ipem, revea led tha t the impor tan t exper ience we have ga ined in th i s a rea o f indus t r y i s se t to con t inue a t fu l l pace . As Rönesans , we w i l l cons t ruc t th ree l i que f ied na tu ra l gas (LNG) p lan ts here , each w i th a capac i t y o f a round 6 .6 mi l l i on tons per year.
Wh i le we c losed 2018 w i th these exc i t ing deve lopments , I w ish to reca l l tha t we s ta r ted 2019 w i th the same momentum. The work o f the RH I team has con t r ibu ted g rea t l y to the success o f a l l the p ro jec ts we have comple ted thus fa r, and w i l l do so aga in fo r those p ro jec ts newly embarked upon. On th i s occas ion , I wou ld l i ke to ex tend spec ia l thanks to Mr. A lp tek in Ti ze r, the Pres iden t o f RH I , and to h i s team, who have shared in our success .

- This year the company celebrated i ts e ighth b i r thday. How would you evaluate i ts progress in general?
- Tha t ’s r igh t . On Apr i l 1 , 2019 the company tu rned e igh t years o ld . We have ach ieved a lo t in those years and rema in on t rack towards our goa l — geograph ica l d i ve rs i t y, and the con t inued expan-s ion o f our range o f se r v ices . A t the moment , our top ica l i ssues a re s tab i l i za t i on and the ma in ta in ing o f the resu l t s ach ieved so fa r.
To s t reng then our pos i t i on we have es tab l i shed a s t rong p ro jec t team, cha i red by Deputy Genera l Manager Yosuke Ka j i yama, w i th in te rna t iona l exper ience in the execu t ion o f l a rge EPC pro jec ts . Fo r example , we a re the EPC con t rac to r fo r the Bo taș Underground Gas S to rage P lan t in Turkey. The GTG p lan t in Akha l ve laya t in Turkmen is tan — rea l i zed in a consor t ium wi th Kawasak i Heavy Indus t r ies , and where RH I a l so per fo rmed a la rge amount o f work under EPC te rms and cond i t i ons — wi l l be launched in a few months ’ t ime. In par t i cu la r, we have eng ineered and supp l ied fac i l i t i es such as coo l ing towers , s to rage tanks , and zones fo r the s to rage and un load ing o f p roduc ts .
As fo r techno logy, we con t inue to in te rac t w i th techno logy compan ies , ma in l y a t the in te rna t iona l l eve l . We s ta r ted our bus iness w i th coopera t ion f rom
Japanese and European compan ies . We have s ince expanded our coopera t ion , hav ing a lso conc luded par tnersh ips w i th Korean , Ch inese , and Amer ican compan ies .
We have worked w i th a number o f compan ies tha t per fo rm compl ica ted and un ique opera t ions . We have comple ted a number o f p ro jec ts tha t fea tu red o f fshore works . Las t year, we comple ted cons t ruc t ion o f an e thane c racker and po l yp ropy lene and po l ye thy lene p roduc t ion p lan t p ro jec t in K i yan l y, Turkmen is tan . The p ro jec t scope inc luded o f f shore works fo r an o f f shore wate r in take fac i l i t y. And now we a re EPC con t rac to rs fo r the Na tu ra l Underground Gas S to rage Ex tens ion p ro jec t fo r the Bo taș company in Turkey. Th is p ro jec t a l so inc ludes o f f shore works , inc lud ing the demol i t i on o f one p la t fo rm and the ins ta l l a t i on o f two new p la t fo rms, d r i l l i ng new we l l s and conser v ing ex i s t ing we l l s , as we l l as the lay ing o f a mar ine p ipe l ine .
We success fu l l y comple ted the ins ta l l a t i on o f modu les a t the Yamal LNG pro jec t fo r the Nova tek company. RH I t ranspor ted the modu les by sea and de l i ve red them on hydrau l i c l i f t s to the cons t ruc t ion s i te , wi th subsequent insta l la t ion. Modular product ion e l im ina tes the need fo r the con t rac to r to bu i ld huge p roduc t ion a reas a t the s i te , and a lso saves t ime.
- What changes are foreseen in the development s t rategy of your company over the next f ive years?
As I ment ioned be fo re , one o f the ma in vec to rs o f our deve lopment i s the d i ve rs i f i ca t ion o f our geographical presence. Growth in the same economies as be fo re i s no t enough fo r us anymore . We have o f f i ces in 11 count r ies and work in the i r marke ts , bu t we a re in te res ted in fu r ther geograph ic expans ion . I rece i ve inv i ta t i ons to en te r new marke ts f rom cus tomers and EPC con t rac to rs w i th whom we have coopera ted be fo re . We cons ider a l l p roposa ls and a re search ing ac t i ve l y. We a re in te res ted in en te r ing some marke ts w i th loca l par tners and some marke ts on our own. So , we a re open to and ready fo r a l l p roposa ls . A t the moment we a re par t i cu la r l y in te res ted in sou theas t As ia and A f r i ca .
We had to c lose our o f f i ce in Un i ted S ta tes o f Amer ica due to the res t r i c t i ons , bu t a t the same t ime our in te res t in expand ing geograph ica l l y rema ins .
Our s igna tu re s t y le in d i f fe ren t par ts o f the wor ld i s to manage each geograph ica l sec to r separa te l y. The head o f f i ce o f RH I in I s tanbu l i s a manag ing company, bu t each reg ion has i t s own au tonomous admin is t ra t i on , wh ich a l l ows i t to pursue a more f l ex ib le po l i cy, and to engage in communica t ion w i th loca l communi t i es . I t a l so ensures qu ick dec is ion-mak ing in s i tu .
Fo r example , work in Russ ia and the C IS count r ies i s coord ina ted by RH I Russ ia f rom the Moscow o f f i ce . RH I Russ ia i s a l a rge , we l l -es tab l i shed o rgan i za t ion tha t has become a lead ing con t rac to r in th i s marke t . The company operates act ive ly in Russ ia , Kazakhstan, and Uzbek is tan .
The Our o f f i ce in A lger ia , where we have a l ready p roved ourse l ves and a re cur ren t l y execu t ing cons t ruc t ion works on four p ro jec ts , was fo rmed on the same pr inc ip le . We have s igned a con t rac t w i th the A lger ian nat iona l o i l and gas company, Sonat rach, abou t co- inves tment and the cons t ruc t ion o f a po l y -p ropy lene p roduc t ion p lan t in the Ceyhan (Turkey ) Mega Pe t rochemica l Indus t r ia l Zone , where Rönesans Ho ld ing ac ts as a management company.
In the Midd le Eas t , the marke t deve lopment s tage has begun in Qa ta r and I raq . Our s t ra tegy i s one o f
g radua l deve lopment in count r ies , b r ing ing them to a leve l o f matur i t y. I n I raq , fo r example , a con t rac t was s igned and ExxonMob i l l aunched the West Qurna DS7 pro jec t . A t the same t ime, our reg iona l p ro jec t management team is be ing es tab l i shed in the Midd le Eas t .
I n Europe we a re imp lement ing indus t r ia l p ro jec ts toge ther w i th BN Indus t r iebouw, the European d i v i s ion o f RH I . The ma in ob jec t i ve o f our company i s the t rans i t i on o f BN Indus t r iebouw f rom subcont rac t genera l cons t ruc t ion works to the func t ions o f a genera l con t rac to r. I n the near fu tu re we a re p lann ing to b r ing the company to a leve l where i t w i l l be ab le to per fo rm the fu l l range o f works , such as e lec t r i ca l , mechan ica l , i ns t rumenta t ion , e tc .
- In addi t ion to the implementat ion of pro jects , are you interested in investment in them?
Oppor tun i t i es fo r inves tment have become a cen t ra l i n te res t o f ours in the las t few years . We opera te under a scheme where par t o f the income — wi th the approva l o f the ho ld ing company — is inves ted . The po l yp ropy lene p roduc t ion p lan t p ro jec t in the Ceyhan Mega Pe t rochemica l Indus t r i a l Zone w i l l be imp lemented in accordance w i th th i s scheme, fo r example . Under the agreement , Rena issance Ho ld ing and Sonat rach w i l l i nves t in the p lan t , and RH I toge ther w i th the Korean con t rac to r GS E&C w i l l execu te the cons t ruc t ion o f the p lan t . I t s p roduc t ion capac i t y w i l l be 450,000 tons a year. As we ga in in exper ience , we in tend to fu r ther deve lop such inves tments .
- So, i t ’s been e ight years s ince the foundat ion of RHI . How are you personal ly fee l ing? Has the number of your f l ights decreased and can you re lax?
We have c rea ted a ve r y power fu l management team here in I s tanbu l , and I no longer have to spend up to 20 days a month f l y ing to meet w i th our cus tomers and par tners . A l l ‘geography o f p resence ’ i s d i v ided be tween RH I ’s sen io r managers , and each o f them is respons ib le fo r bus iness deve lopment and the car r y ing ou t o f p ro jec ts in the i r own reg ions . Thus , i t rea l l y i s poss ib le to spend more t ime in the o f f i ce and to engage in s t ra teg ic ac t i v i t i es .
