TYPICAL DANCE OF CATALUNYA

The Sardana is a Catalan folk dance is considered the national dance of Catalonia. The name may refer to both the dance and the music. It is a collective dance dancing men and women holding hands in a circle with their feet and tapping the rhythms of the song. Dancing is harder than it looks. The dancers have to count the number of steps and identify the changes of rhythm, sound volume and other musical motifs to interpret correctly the steps, with resources such as air and jump steps moving wider, etc..The music played by the Sardana is a couplet, which usually consists of 12 instruments played by 11 musicians. Four of the instruments (tenor, tible, flute and drum) are typical Catalan instruments, the other four are more conventional (bass, trumpet, trombone and flugelhorn). The music Sardana (part of what is known generically as music of a band) is almost always binary meter of 2/4 or 6/8, and can be heard in concert form. Some compositions add a choral accompaniment. There are more than 25,000 scores Sardana, but only the instrumental versions are used for dancing.
