Function of the Immune System

• Protect the body from pathogens (foreign/harmful diseases)

Organs of the Immune System

• The immune system is also called the lymphatic system because it creates and processes lymph.

• Lymph is any substance that enters the lymph capillaries.

• Substances enter the lymphatic system through the lymph capillaries which are located right by the capillaries of the circulatory system.

• The purpose of lymph is to move foreign particle to the lymph nodes where they can be destroyed.

• The lymphatic vessels are just like veins and are used to transport lymph

• Lymph nodes are the main organs of the lymphatic system. They are made of units called lymphatic nodules which contain large amounts of macrophages and lymphocytes.

• The two larger organs of the lymphatic system are the Thymus and the Spleen.

The role of the skin in the immune system

• The skin acts as the first line of defense against pathogens entering the body

• Creates a physical barrier- pathogens have a hard time penetrating the skin

• Creates a chemical barrier- pathogens killed by oils and acids on the skin

What carries out the function of the immune system?

• Leukocytes- White blood cells• Divided into two big groups– Granular– Agranular

Granular

• Look like they have grains in their cells under a microscope

Types of Granular Cells

1. Neutrophil- Phagocytizes (eats) small particles

2. Basophil- Kill parasites (something that lives off of another organism) and control inflammation

3. Eosinophil- Release heparin (prevents blood clots) and histamines (increase blood flow to injured tissue)

Agranular

• Do not look like they have grains in their cells under a microscope

Types of Agranualr Cells

1. Macrophage- Phagocytizes (eat) large particles

2. Lymphocyte- Provides immunity by creating antibodies

3. Monocytes- respond to the inflammation process and are cells that can turn into a macrophage.

• Neutrophils are the most prevalent making up over half of the white blood cells.

• Lymphocytes are the second largest group followed by macrophages.

• There are very small amounts of the other two.
