Recessive Disorder Review

• What is a recessive disorder? • What is a savior baby? • What allele combination does the person with

the disorder have? • What is a carrier?

• Students will be able to make diagnoses of recessive and dominant genetic disorders based on symptom clues.

Dominant Genetic Disorders

• Dominant Genetic Disorders: Disorders caused by dominant alleles.

• Those who do not have the disorder are homozygous recessive for that trait.

Huntington’s Disease

• Occurrence: 1 in 10,000• Cause: Gene affecting

brain function is defective

• Effect: Uncontrollable movements; movement loss; loss of brain function

• Tx: No cure or treatment

*Age of onset between 30 and 50 years old

Achondroplasia

• Occurrence: 1 in 25,000

• Cause: A gene that affects bone growth is abnormal

• Effect: Short arms/legs (Most common form of dwarfism)

• Tx: No cure/Treatment

75% of individuals with Acho. Are born to parents of average size. When this happens, the condition occurred because of a mutation or genetic change.

Individuals with Acho. Can have average sized children!

Gallery Walk/Mystery Illness: 15 minutes

• You are going to play the role of doctors! Around the room, there are patient profiles posted.

• You must visit each patient profile. Using the description of the symptoms and your notes, make your diagnosis! (It can be a dominant OR recessive genetic disorder!)

• After you have made your diagnosis, you must recommend treatment.

Expectations: You must complete the gallery walk with a low volume. If you are playing around, you will go back to your seat and automatically receive a zero on this assignment.
